[Letter] September 28, Gower Place [to] / William Godwin.
See also letters in the collection relating to Godwin\u27s son-in-law Percy Shelley.Godwin states that he regrets missing the visit of the undisclosed recipient; he journeyed to the recipient\u27s chambers but did not meet him there. "[T]o prevent future disappointments" Godwin informs the recipient that he leaves the house "a little after two" and does not return until dinner. Godwin, the author of the celebrated crime novel _Things as They Are; or, The Adventures of Caleb Williams_ (1794), was married to Mary Wollstonecraft, author of _The Vindications of the Rights of Woman_ (1792), of whom he wrote a biography after her death; their child, Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, married the Romantic poet and wrote _Frankenstein_ (1812). Godwin also wrote histories and political and philosophical treatises including his principal work _An Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, and Its Influence on General Virtue and Happiness_ (1793) which advocated the disaggregation of traditional government into self-sufficient communities to promote individual agency and prevent tyranny
Exploring factors affecting digital piracy using the norm activation and UTAUT models: the role of national culture
We develop and use an integrated individual-level model to explain the driving forces behind digital piracy (DP) practice in two nations. The proposed model combines the Norm Activation model and Unified Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology models. This study also explores the effect of culture on intention (INT) to practice DP in two nations: US (individualistic) and India (collectivistic). A survey instrument was used to collect data from 231 US and 331 Indian participants. Use of the integrated model proves to be a powerful and a viable approach to understanding DP across cultures. In each nation, all 10 path coefficients on the research model are statistically significant thereby establishing the fact that personal norm, together with other factors, influences INT to engage in DP, which in turn, may influence the actual practice. The results reveal a support for cross-cultural generalizability and applicability of the proposed model. Culture clearly plays a strong moderating role in two out of the three paths tested. The implications of the findings are discussed
William Godwin
Godwin was an eighteenth-century radical writer and journalist and one of the leading participants in the debates sparked by the French Revolution. An ally of Tom Paine, he was also a critic of Edmund Burke, the Whig-cum-conservative author of Reflections on the Revolution in France. Godwin shared Burke’s abhorrence of The Terror but wholly rejected his glowing defence of aristocracy. At first enthusiastic about the Revolution, Godwin made two lasting interventions into revolutionary debates, the theoretical treatise Political Justice and the novel Caleb Williams.....

Mary Shelley, Life of William Godwin
Mary Shelley's Life of William Godwin is an incomplete biography of a major author of the Enlightenment by his daughter, a major Romantic author. The working title 'Life of William Godwin' was affixed some time ago by the Bodleian to a sheaf of papers dated 1835 to 1839, the majority in the handwriting of Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley, forming an 'unfinished' and 'abortive' biographical memoir of her late father. In July 1836, Godwin's widow Mary Jane signed a contract with publisher Henry Colburn [Bodleian, MS. Eng. lett. c. 461, fol. 153] for a two-volume 'Memoirs and Correspondence of the late William Godwin', to be written by Mary Shelley, who referred to it while it was in preparation as 'my Father's Life'. At this period, she was 'Mrs Shelley', widow of the poet Shelley, mother of the heir to a baronetcy and daughter of a famous but questionable marriage - that of Mary Wollstonecraft, author of A Vindication of the Rights of Woman, to William Godwin, author of An Enquiry concerning Political Justice. Emergent trends in the reported incidence of prostate cancer in Nigeria
Godwin O Ifere1, Fisseha Abebe2, Godwin A Ananaba1,31Department of Biological Sciences, 2Department of Mathematical Sciences, 3Center for Cancer Research and Therapeutic Development, Clark Atlanta University, Atlanta, GA, USABackground: To date there has not been any nationwide age-standardized incidence data reported for prostate cancer in Nigeria. We examined and integrated diverse trends in the age-specific incidence of prostate cancer into a comprehensive trend for Nigeria, and examined how best the existing data could generate a countrywide age-standardized incidence rate for the disease. Methods: Data were obtained from studies undertaken between 1970 and 2007 in referral hospital-based cancer registries. Records from at least one tertiary hospital in each of the six geopolitical zones of Nigeria were examined retrospectively. Data were also reported for the rural population in cross-sectional prospective studies. Age-standardized incidence rates and the annual incidence of disease were calculated. Results: Higher incidence rates for prostate cancer during this period were recorded for patients aged 60–69 years and 70–79 years, with a lower incidence rate for patients aged younger than 50 years. An exponential annual incidence rate of disease was observed in the 50–79 year age group and peaked at 70–79 years before dropping again at age 80 years. The results showed metastasis in more than half of these hospital-based prostate tumors. Conclusion: Our results suggest that prostate cancer occurs at a relatively young age in Nigerians and that hospital-based registry reports may not appropriately reflect the incidence of the disease in Nigeria. A countrywide screening program is urgently needed. Finally, the difference in reported stages of disease found in Nigerians and African-Americans versus Caucasians suggests biological differences in the prognosis. Nigeria may thus typify one of the ancestral populations that harbor inherited genes predisposing African-Americans to high-risk prostate cancer. Keywords: prostate cancer, annual age-standardized incidence rate, Nigeria cancer registr
O cosmopolitismo de William Godwin
International audienceIt is to show that for William Godwin, in his Enquiry Concerning Political Justice, the question of relations between the individual and humanity, or between small civil societies and the whole of mankind, draws a form of alternative cosmopolitanism. According to the author, it is necessary to act in every circumstance for the good of all men, but also and above all, to open up to the closer union with the "human family". The whole point, then, is for Godwin to imagine a political form that allows the individual and local exercise of justice to have universal effects
The Effect of Espoused Culture on Acceptance of Online Tax Tiling Services in an Emerging Economy
This paper investigates the impact of espoused national culture on the individuals’ acceptance of online tax filing services in an emerging economy. This study integrates the theory of planned behavior and incorporates the impact of taxpayers’ trust and skepticism on their intentions to adopt online tax filing. This paper studies the moderating effect of espoused national culture on taxpayers’ intentions to e-file taxes using either government or private vendor tax filing portals. The results indicate that higher subjective norm, positive attitude, higher perceived behavioral control, and higher perceived trust are linked to higher intentions of adopting online tax filing.
