Quality Assurance System as a University Education Policy Tool in Nigeria: International Comparative Analysis
Get PDFThe study adopted an exploratory discussion to analyse and compare quality assurance system in Nigerian universities and other European countries specifically the United Kingdom. Quality assurance is a typical case of a policy zone where there is notable global convergence within a couple of decades. The quality assurance system in Nigeria was first adopted in 1974 by the National Universities Commission (NUC) as a parastatal in the Federal Ministry of Education. Since then, it has experienced some changes such as empowering the NUC to lay down Minimum Academic Standard (MAS) and approving academic programmes for Nigerian universities. The study found that the Nigerian quality assurance system began with the regulation of its higher education system by the University of London. Although, overtime, growing differences between the Nigerian Quality Assurance and the United Kingdom Models and some other European Higher Education Areas had become evident. That was largely due to high incidences of underfunding, infrastructural decay, declining students, examination malpractices and industrial crises, all of which threatened the quality of education. This paper also pointed out that leading universities in the world held the highest amount of funds either as income or endowments. Thus, it concluded that adequate funding was necessary for the university system, if quality was to be assured
Challenges Affecting Educational Research in Delta State, Nigeria
Get PDFThis study investigated the factors inhibiting the conduct and uptake of educational research in Nigeria with specific reference to Delta State. Data were collected using a self-administered questionnaire from forty-two (42) academic staffs drawn from three universities and three Colleges of Education in the state. The data was analysed using descriptive statistics. Two hypotheses on factors affecting research were tested at the level of confidence p. = .05 using the student-t test. A range of managerial and methodological factors were identified as affecting the conduct and uptake of research in the country. These respectively included absence of a clear national development philosophy and adequate funding for research and gaps in methodological competence and research integrity on the part of educational researchers. These findings are cross-referenced with related literature after which conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made
Peace Education in Secondary Schools: A Strategic Tool for Peace Building and Peace Culture in Nigeria
Get PDFThe paper discusses Peace Education as Strategic Tool for Peace Building and Peace Culture in Nigeria. This was prompted by the inherent incompatibility between the objectives of individuals, ethnic/social groups in Nigeria. The research question addresses Normative and Ethical issues regarding peace, the absence of violence/hostility and its education in secondary schools were discussed; two research questions and two hypotheses where addressed. Eighty Nine (89) subjects (Teachers) were selected from 124 (Public and Private) Secondary Schools in Delta State. The internal consistency of the questionnaire items were tested using the Cronbach alpha method with a coefficient of 0.87. A mean and t test statistics was used to analyze the research question and hypothesis. The study revealed that peace and cultural harmony goes hand in hand, in order for peace education to gain academic acceptance it has to be defined in terms of the predominant culture of the society and that anti-social vices should be dispirited amongst Nigerian. It recommends that the golden rule and other ethical codes of conduct should be infused into the curriculum of secondary schools in Nigeria and that Government should advocate for cross cultural education if peace education is to gain a lasting grip in Nigerian. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Get PDF“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Get PDFWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. No full textWe have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
