    An Adaptive Strategy for Wind Speed Forecasting Under Functional Data Horizon: A Way Toward Enhancing Clean Energy

    An important issue in competitive energy markets is the accurate and efficient wind speed forecasting for wind power production. However, wind speed forecasting models developed for one location usually do not match the other site for various reasons like changes in terrain, different wind speed patterns, and atmospheric factors such as temperature, pressure, humidity, etc. Thus, introducing a flexible model that captures all the features is a challenging task. This paper proposes a functional data analysis (FDA) approach to forecast the site variant wind daily profiles with higher accuracy. Unlike the traditional methods, the FDA is more attractive as it forecasts a complete daily profile, and thus, forecasts can be obtained in the ultra-short period. To this end, the wind speed data is first filtered for extreme values. The filtered series is then divided into deterministic (Component-I) and stochastic (Component-II) components. Component-I is modeled and forecasted based on the generalized additive modeling technique. On the other hand, Component-II is modeled and forecasted using functional models such as functional autoregressive (FAR) and FAR with explanatory variables (FARX). For comparison purposes, forecasts from the traditional univariate autoregressive integrated moving average (ARIMA), seasonal ARIMA (SARIMA), SARIMA with exogenous information (SARIMAX), and neural network autoregressive (NNAR) models are also obtained. For empirical analysis, the wind speed data are obtained from the NASA power project for the site Canada located in Durham, England, and one-day-ahead out-of-sample forecasts are obtained for a complete year. The forecasting performance of different models is assessed through different accuracy measures, namely mean error, root mean squared error, mean absolute error, and mean absolute standard error. The results indicate that the functional models outperform the classical ARIMA, SARIMA, SARIMAX, and a deep learning model, NNAR. Within the functional models, the forecasting ability of the FARX is superior to FAR

    Integrated use of CFD and field data for accurate thermal analyses of oil/gas boilers

    In the present study we develop a complete Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) modeling procedure suitable for accurate simulations of industrial boilers fed alternatively with gaseous and liquid fuels. The model is developed and validated by means of data from on-site testing. Two different boilers are considered: a 6-burner steam generator of a refinery for the model definition, and a 32-burner thermal power plant boiler for validation, fed by flare-gas/natural-gas or Heavy-Fuel-Oil (HFO). Selected reliable experimental data coming from performance testing are used for both the set-up of the CFD simulations as well as to compute the Flue Exit Gas Temperatures (FEGTs) employed as validation criteria. The flare-gas testing on the 6-burner boiler allows us to accurately determine that a membrane wall emissivity around 0.60 is appropriate as a boundary condition for radiation. By a sensitivity analysis, the relevance of wall emissivity with respect to fouling thermal resistance on the overall heat transfer inside the furnace is established. For boilers alternatively operating with gaseous fuel and HFO a value of 2.8 kW/(m2·K) has been found appropriate. HFO testing on the 6-burner boiler provides data to develop the additional soot modeling, crucial to properly catch oil flame emissivity, based on the model of Khan and Greeves. This allows the matching of a mean soot mass fraction of 1%–3% in the flame zone, a range found by in-flame measurements in the literature and confirmed in the present study by overall heat exchange data in the whole furnace coming from HFO boiler testing. Finally, the 32-burner boiler is considered for validation: using the same procedure and parameters, excellent agreement is found between experimental and CFD results, both on a 100% load natural gas and on a 107% load HFO performance testing. The study demonstrates how field data can be used to validate CFD simulations and confirms that the use of physically meaningful parameters and models exempts from repeated tuning: no change is needed for emissivity and fouling thermal resistance between gaseous and liquid fuel operation, and even a simple soot modeling can be used, just ensuring physically consistent particulate concentration in the oil flame

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Detailed Description of the Fluidized Bed Mixing and Heat Transfer by Means of Eulerian Multi-Fluid Numerical Simulations

    The hydrodynamics and heat transfer of a binary mixture of sand and biomass in a fluidized bed have been numerically investigated. The Eulerian multi-fluid model MFM incorporating kinetic theory of granular flow was used to numerically investigate fluidized bed. A commercial code has been used together with user-defined functions to correctly predict the hydrodynamics and the heat transfer. Numerical results were validated against the experiment in terms of pressure drop across the bed and concentration of biomass at different heights of the bed. Influence of additional parameters, such as superficial gas velocity and sand sizes on hydrodynamics were investigated. Additionally, heat transfer in the fluidized bed was also studied highlighting the influence of the temperature dependent properties of air on the results. The present results reveal that better mixing is achieved for smallest sand size, also promoting more uniform temperature of biomass

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
