    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Development and tribological behaviour of UHMWPE filled epoxy gradient composites

    In this study, ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE) filled epoxy gradient composites have been developed. Samples were prepared for different centrifugation time periods. SEM and optical microstructures confirmed the graded dispersion of UHMWPE particles in the epoxy matrix. Quick estimation of gradient characteristics has been done by abrasive wear measurements. Sliding wear tests were conducted by using a pin-on-disc machine. The sliding wear rate of composites reduced on increasing centrifugation time. Reduction in sliding wear rate in UHMWPE filled epoxy gradient composites has been attributed to the reduction of tensile contact stresses as a result of the lubricating effect of UHMWPE's smooth surface and highly entangled chain structure of UHMWPE

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Effect of coupling agent on abrasive wear behaviour of chopped jute fibre-reinforced polypropylene composites.

    In this paper, studies have been conducted to investigate the abrasive wear behaviour of jute fibre-reinforced polypropylene composites. Effect of addition of maleic anhydride-grafted polypropylene (MA-g-PP)-coupling agent by two different approach, sliding distance and load on abrasive wear performance of jute fibre–PP composites has been determined by using a SUGA abrasion tester. Use of coupling agent gives better wear resistance as compared to without the use of coupling agent. It has also been found that addition of MA-g-PP coupling agent during melt mixing gives better wear resistance as compared to the jute PP composites having MA-g-PP solution-treated jute fibres, which has been explained on the basis of highest thermal stability of jute–PP Composite having melt-mixed MA-g-PP. Abrasive wear performance of the composites has been explained with the help of surface microstructures of worn surfaces

    Influence of Wood Flour Loading on Tribological Behavior of Epoxy Composites.

    A series of wood flour (WF) filled epoxy composites consisting of five samples were prepared by varying the concentration of WF in step of 10 wt%. These samples were characterized for its wear behavior in abrasive and sliding wear modes to study the influence of WF. It was observed that specific wear rate (k0) of all the composites decreased with increasing load in sliding wear mode. Specific wear rate was of the order of 10−10 m3/Nm in abrasive wear mode and ∼10−14 m3/Nm in sliding wear mode. Composite containing 40 wt% WF exhibited the lowest specific wear rate in abrasive wear mode. While composite containing 20 wt% WF exhibited lowest specific wear rate in sliding wear mode. This was attributed to the fact that in abrasive wear mode, the wear debris consisting of mainly WF particles was maximum for 10 wt% composite and minimum for 40 wt% composite. In sliding wear mode, the exposed WF particles caused maximum roughening of steel counterface in the case of composite containing higher concentration of WF particles. Hence, they exhibited a higher value of specific wear rate

    High stress abrasive wear of bamboo in mainly two directions parallel and perpendicular to the fibre direction has been determined by using a Suga abrasion wear tester. Bamboo is a unidirectional natural composite. Unidirectional cellulosic fibres in bamboo provide unique directional wear properties. The anisotropic abrasive wear behaviour was observed due to difference in fibre vascular bundle orientation present in bamboo.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
