A technical modification of heart-lung transplantation in rats

    No full text
Hemodynamic studies were carried out on a series of rats undergoing heart-lung transplantation according to the technique of Sun Lee. The results suggested a new hypothesis of blood circulation in the heart-lung block by demonstrating the lack of necessity for the venovenous anastomosis. A new technique, with just one aortoaortic anastomosis, was therefore evaluated. Its value and reliability in a series of 30 rats are discussed

Microsurgical treatment of lymphedemas of the limbs

Lymphaticovenous anastomosis for surgical treatment of lymphedema of the limbs has been performed for several years with good results. The authors report on their experience, gained since 1976, after having operated on primary or secondary lymphedemas (five upper and 15 lower limbs). Lymphaticovenous anastomosis was performed according to Degni's technique using a special needle by which lymphatic vessels are inserted into the vein and secured to its wall. Eighty-three percent of the subjective results were good, and the percentage of mean volumetric reduction in the operated limbs was 43% in 16 controlled cases. The postoperative course of secondary lymphedemas of the upper limbs was sometimes complicated by sudden lymphangitis attacks. In dealing with primary lymphedemas, the best results were obtained when all the operated limbs had large volumetric reduction, allowing the patients to resume their normal activities. The authors conclude that, after a long period of preoperative anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial therapy and regardless of lymphographic patterns, it is always worthwhile to perform a surgical exploration of the crural lymph nodes

Experimental lymphatico-venous shunt in the rat: pressure controls and long-term patency

In a series of rats which underwent end-to-side lymphaticovenous shunts, between precaval lymphatic collector and infrarenal cava vein, pressure values in lymphatic and venous systems and long-term patency of the anastomosis have been evaluated. Lymphatic pressure has always been higher than venous pressure, providing a good physiological basis for the functioning of the shunt. Short-term patency (15 days) was 100% and long-term patency (90 days) 80% in all the controlled animals. The results obtained in this experimental model seem to support the efficacy of this procedure also in its clinical use

Treatment of lymphedema of the extremities with lymphatico-venous anastomosis

Very encouraging results have been obtained over a number of years with direct lymphaticovenous anastomosis in the treatment of primary and secondary lymphoedemas of the limbs. 12 cases involving the upper and lower extremities have been treated since 1976. An account is given of the personal technique employed. This makes use of dioptric means of magnification, instruments, materials, and microsurgical techniques. In some instances, differences have been observed between the objective results and improvements in the subjective symptomatology, as well as between treatment of the upper limbs (enlarged arms after mastectomy) and both primary and secondary lower limbs involvement. The pre- and postoperative cautions required are explained, together with the indications for treatment. An explanation is offered of some of the failures observed

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
