A DELAY-LINE ON A VLSI GATE ARRAY AS A TIME DIGITIZER

    No full text
A delay line was developed on a VLSI gate array for drift time measurements on muon chambers of the ZEUS detector at HERA. It consists of 80 cells featuring a 3 ns/cell propagation time; at the start a short pulse is injected into the line and at the stop the status of the line is latched into a 10 byte register. An r.m.s. resolution better than 1 ns was obtained with this reasonably low-cost TDC

Efficiency studies of the front-end trigger device of the muon drift tubes for the CMS detector at LHC

    No full text
Three simplified prototypes of the first-level trigger front-end device for the muon barrel drift chambers of CMS were tested on a chamber prototype. Tests were performed at several incidence angles of a muon beam and with different magnetic field configurations. The recorded drift times were also used to test a full software model reproducing the actual algorithm applied in the final ASIC being produced. The efficiency performance of this software model and of the tested prototype are presented in this paper

Development of a sapphire microstrip detector for gamma beam monitoring

    No full text
Artificial sapphire gained interest as radiation detector in the recent years, as an alternative to diamond. The research and development campaign to design, build and characterize a radiation-hard detector for gamma beam monitoring takes place in the scientific context of the Laser Und XFEL Experiment (LUXE) at DESY. The experiment requirements of beam profile reconstruction with micro-metric precision and radiation hardness led to a proposed sapphire microstrip detector design. This work introduces the scientific context for a sapphire microstrip gamma beam profiler (GBP) and describes the experimental campaign for sapphire characterization from early prototypes to the final development of a 192-strip detector.<br/

The LST analog read-out system of the ZEUS muon detector

    No full text
A muon position detector based on limited streamer tubes has been built for the ZEUS experiment at the HERA e-p collider at Desy. The tubes are arranged in chambers equipped with electronics circuitry providing an analog read-out of induced signals on strips set orthogonal to the tube wires. The electronic module for charge amplification and conversion will be described including some results obtained from the complete system

High precision bidimensional readout for LST

    No full text
We describe a high precision bidimensional readout for a large plastics Limited Streamer Tube (LST) system, using induced charge analog readout for the coordinate along the wires and digital readout with drift time for the other. In a test we easily obtained a resolution in the drift coordinate of about 150 μm with the possibility of solving left/right ambiguity using digital strip information
