Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
FACTORS ASSOCIATED WITH GROWTH MONITORING AND PROMOTION AMONG CHILDREN 0-23 MONTHS IN MALONGO SUB-COUNTY, LWENGO DISTRICT, CENTRAL UGANDA. CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY.
BACKGROUND.
The study explored factors associated with growth monitoring and promotion among children 0-23 months in Malongo sub-county, Lwengo district, central Uganda with specific objectives; assessment of Nutritional status of children, knowledge of caregivers, accessibility to Health facilities and Health-care package.
METHODOLOGY.
Qualitative and quantitative approaches were applied to draw clearer correlations of findings. Questionnaires with semi-structured open and closed ended questions were used to collect data. Health staff were interviewed and observations made with a simple checklist. Pre-tests were carried out for result consistency and validity prior to community subjection.
RESULTS.
Most caregivers were knowledgeable about GMP services. 200(75.5%) had easy access to health facilities. A number of children were wasted 67(25%), stunted 47(17.5%) and underweight 51(19.2%) as per Z-scores. 190(71.7%) female caregivers, 200(75.5%) were cohabiting/married. Education levels did not impact much on GMP , elites 85(32.1%) never practiced what they knew. 63(23.8%) households at times went without a meal due to poverty. 30(11.3%) caregivers received GMP counseling. 240(90.6%) found functional facilities but 115(43.4%) expressed varying challenges. Nutritional status of children was majorly affected by knowledge differences, unacceptable food regarded as medicine where restrictions deprived children of balanced diets. Poor health-seeking practices due to poverty and negative attitude about the health sector contributed to undefined malnutrition.
CONCLUSION.
Boy children were more affected than girls. Malnutrition taking both undernutrition and over nutrition was more pronounced in boys than girls. Thus, double malnutrition burden is equally on the rise in low- and middle-income countries thereby calling for more efforts in regular GMP to solve and prevent anomalies especially in the first a thousand days of life.
RECOMMENDATION.
Health service points should be equipped with knowledgeable personnel, functional screening tools and nutritional supplements. Positive attitude should be promoted in both caregivers and health workers. Policy makers should prioritize MCH services
UNDERSTANDING KEY DRIVERS OF UNDER NUTRITION AMONG ADULTS LIVING WITH HIV AND AIDS ATTENDING ART CLINIC AT KYENJOJO GENERAL HOSPITAL, WESTERN UGANDA. A CROSS-SECTIONAL STUDY.
Background:
The study aimed to assess the nutritional status along with the clinical and socio-economic factors associated with under nutrition among those attending the anti-retroviral clinic at Kyenjojo General Hospital.
Methodology:
A cross-sectional and descriptive study was conducted with both qualitative and quantitative research approaches. Using purposive sampling, we recruited key informants to introduce the study to the target population. By simple random sampling, the study assessed respondents 334 subjects considering a 5 % degree of precision at a 95 % confidence interval. Data on treatment patterns and socio-demographics were collected using structured questionnaires while anthropometric data was collected using anthropometric tools. Anthropometric data was used to compute the BMI. All data was entered in MS Excel and transferred to SPSS version 23. Descriptive statistics such as the frequencies, means, and standard deviations were expressed. The degree of relationship among variables was statistically evaluated using chi-square analyses. Statistical significance was reported at the p > 0.05 level.
Results:
The nutritional status of 51.1% of the respondents was normal, 16.2% were underweight, 18.3% were overweight and 14.4% were obese. Under nutrition was more prevalent in males (19.1%) than in females (14.0%). In addition, under nutrition was significantly associated with age (P=0.009), marital status (P<0.001), the highest level of education (P=0.008), estimated monthly income (P=0.002), alcohol use (P=0.031), treatment regimen (P=0.002), opportunistic infections (P=0.014), and clinical staging of disease (P=0.022).
Conclusion:
Under nutrition is a major challenge among people attending the anti-retroviral treatment at Kyenjojo General Hospital. Major changes in extension service provision, by including adults in affected Kyenjojo would help alleviate the problem at hand.
Recommendation
Health care providers including nutritionists and dieticians should create awareness on the role of nutrition in HIV/AIDS and anti-retroviral treatment
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
SPECIFIC CORRELATED FACTORS TO UNDERNUTRITION AMONG CHILDREN 0-59 MONTHS IN MUBENDE DISTRICT: A CASE STUDY OF MUBENDE REGIONAL REFERRAL HOSPITAL, CENTRAL UGANDA.
Background:
Malnutrition is one of the major causes of mortality and morbidity among children 0-59 months of age not only in Uganda but worldwide. To understand the causes of malnutrition among children who are 0-59 months of age, a study was conducted in Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, Mubende district in the south-central region of Uganda to find out the specific correlated factors responsible for undernutrition children of this age category.
Methodology:
The data was collected from MMRH by use of a structured questionnaire that involved Child anthropometry, Child-related factors, maternal-related factors, and male involvement. Univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analysis of data was done in MS Excel, Epi Info program-nutrition module, and Stata statistical software.
Results:
It was found out that caretaker (P=0.03, 0.01, 0.00), age at which the mother got first born (P=0.00, 0.00, 0.02), maternal occupation (P=0.02, 0.00, 0.01), and maternal education level (P=0.03, 0.02, 0.01) were the major factors influencing on undernutrition (wasting, stunting and underweight) respectively. The study also noted that male involvement in activities to address childhood undernutrition was mainly in purchasing food while other activities were not paid much attention to.
Conclusion:
The study identifies that caretaker, age at which the mother got first born, maternal occupation, and maternal education level were the major factors influencing undernutrition in children 0-59 months of age in Mubende Regional Referral Hospital, Mubende district.
Recommendation:
The study recommends the government strengthen its poverty alleviation programs to improve household incomes, as a basis for food security. Further studies have also been recommended to be carried out with male partners themselves to understand their perspective.
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
