SHOWCAVE: a multidisciplinary research project to study, classify and mitigate the environmental impact in tourist caves
Tourist caves are caves made accessible to the public for touristic purposes, managed by a governmental or commercial organization. The numbers of visitors (up to 500,000/year/cave) and the profits deriving from such activities have recently gained importance at global scale. We created a multidisciplinary research team to provide an in-depth characterization of the major Italian show caves and the environmental impacts related to tourist exploitation. Five research units will act in the project, focusing on the biotic and abiotic components of the cave ecosystem. The team will make use of innovative techniques and original methods based on a wide set of indicators, including biological, geological, palaeontological, archaeological and physical ones. Keeping in consideration the existing International
Guidelines for Cave Management, specific suggestions for the sustainable management of tourism will be provided both to the national and the international audience of cave managers. The work will serve as a test for the first application of a Life Cycle Assessment to the touristic service offered by show caves, to improve and promote sustainable processes and provide a sound basis for informed decisions on cave management
Aim of this research is the study of the head areas of Missiaga and Bordina torrents, which are left tributaries of T. Cordevole near Agordo (BL). From a geological point of view, this area is characterised by the Triassic formations outcrop, that constitute a rigid-plastic contact system. In fact, the terrigenous formation of La Valle, San Cassiano and Raibl, which have a total thickness of 350-400 m, underlie the formation of Dolomia Principale, about 800 m thick in the Missiaga valley and 300 m thick in the Bordina one. Moreover, the intense Alpine tectonic activity has provided a dense network of discontinuities. The contrast of the shear strength between the formations and the disjunction of the dolomitic mass have originated different typologies of large landslides (millions of cubic meters): the Missiaga valley is characterised by some back-tiltings, whereas the watershed zone between the two valleys is affected by a slump that originated in the terrigenous formations, consequen..
EFFECTS OF DIFFERENT NOISES ON SPEECH-DISCRIMINATION BY THE ELDERLY
Elderly people often complain of difficulty in speech discrimination, especially in noise environments. The effects of 4 competing noises on sentence intelligibility were evaluated: speech noise, cocktail party noise, traffic noise and continuous discourse. A comparison was made between young and old normally hearing subjects and young and old hearing-impaired subjects with similar audiograms. The old people with normal hearing had slightly reduced discrimination compared to the young during competing speech noise and cocktail noise. Discrimination in the hearing-impaired elderly was also significantly worse than in the young people with normals hearing, during competing cocktail party noise, traffic noise and continuous discourse. The young hearing-impaired had results between young normal-hearing subjects and old hearing-impaired, except for continuous discourse. Thus the effects of age on speech discrimination in noise are subtle, becoming more pronounced in the presence of hearing loss. Age-related changes in primary speech discrimination were particularly evident during competing continuous discourse

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Hearing threshold assessment with auditory brainstem response (ABR) and Electrocochleography (ECochG) in uncooperative children.
Two-hundred-and-sixty uncooperative children (442 ears) performed auditory brainstem response (ABR) and Electrocochleography (ECochG) in the same diagnostic session under general anaesthesia, and the results obtained with the two different methods were compared. A difference > or = 20 dB between the two methods was found in 134 ears (30.3%). The presence of middle ear effusion and symptoms of a possible central nervous system pathology were considered in order to verify the evidence of a correlation between the difference in ABR-ECochG results and these clinical parameters. The presence of middle ear effusion was not significantly correlated with differences > or = 20 dB (p = 0.1347). On the contrary, the presence of symptoms indicative of a possible central nervous system (CNS) involvement was significantly correlated with differences > or = 20 dB (p = 0.0000). ABR has to be considered the first choice in hearing assessment strategy, either for screening or diagnosis. However, the diagnosis of hearing loss only on the basis of the presence or absence of wave V requires some care in case of suspected central auditory pathway lesions. In these cases, ECochG may be the only reliable diagnostic tool for hearing assessment in uncooperative subjects
