Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Functionalization of Nonwoven Pet Fabrics by Water/O<sub>2< Plasma for Biomolecule Mediated Cell Cultivation
Turkoglu Sasmazel, Hilal/0000-0002-0254-4541The main target of this study was to obtain COOH functionalities on the surface of 3D, nonwoven polyethylene terephthalate fabrics (NWPFs) by using low pressure water/O-2 plasma assisted treatment. The plasma treatments were performed in a cylindrical, capacitively coupled RF-plasma-reactor and then following steps were performed: in situ (oxalyl chloride vapors) gas/solid reaction to convert -OH functionalities into COCl groups; and hydrolysis under open laboratory conditions using air moisture for final-COOH functionalities. COOH and OH functionalities on the surfaces were detected quantitatively by fluorescent labeling techniques. The COOH-functionalized samples were biologically activated with insulin or heparin molecules by using spacer polyoxyethylene bis-amine (PEO). Successful immobilization was checked qualitatively using electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA). The average amount of immobilized insulin and heparin onto NWPF surfaces were determined as 146.09 and 4.81 nmol.cm(-2), respectively. Our results showed that water/O-2 plasma assisted treatment worked very well for functionalization and biofunctionalization of 3D NWPF disks comparing with wet-chemistry methods. Cell culture experiments indicated that functionalization of NWPF disks and/or nanotopographies on the disk surfaces were effective on adhesion and proliferation of L929 mouse fibroblasts
Impact of Nanotopography And/Or Functional Groups on Periodontal Ligament Cell Growth

The prepared discs were characterized by various methods after the plasma treatment. Periodontal ligament (PDL) fibroblasts were used in cell culture studies. The cell culture results showed that plasma treated 3D NWPF discs are favorable for PDL cell spreading, growth and viability due to the presence of functional groups and/or the nanotopography of their surfaces
Evaluating LMP Forecasting with LSTM Networks: A Deep Learning Approach to Analyzing Electricity Prices During Unpredictable Events
The unpredictable events can significantly impact energy demand and supply in the electricity market, leading to price volatility. This study aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Long Short Term Memory (LSTM) approach in analyzing real-time data on Locational Marginal Prices (LMPs) during periods before, during, and after the COVID19 pandemic. Open data from the Midcontinent Independent System Operator (MISO) are utilized to obtain the LMP data. To evaluate the accuracy of the model predictions, three performance metrics were utilized, namely Mean Absolute Error (MAE), Root Mean Squared Error (RMSE), and coefficient of determination (R2). Additionally, the study assesses the ability of LSTM to forecast LMP, considering yearly fluctuations. Graphical visualizations are created to depict the trends and patterns of LMP changes and forecasts over time. The results demonstrate the promising potential of LSTM in forecasting LMP even in unpredictable situations like pandemic. Despite the challenges of accurately estimating extreme energy demands during the pandemic, the LSTM model generates reliable forecasts, as evidenced by the performance metrics. The graphical visualizations also illustrate the effectiveness of LSTM in capturing the underlying trends and patterns of LMP changes over time
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
