How to minimize the negative impacts on Bundala National Park due to irrigation development of the Kirindi Oya River Basin
The environment is an important water user, and one that often finds itself at the bottom of the list of priorities when supplies become scare. This research studied how the needs of wetlands can coexist in parallel with irrigation demands and other human activities. Sri Lanka is a signatory to the Convention on Wetlands of International Importance for Migratory Waterfowl, known as the Ramsar Convention and Bundala Lagoon was declared Sri Lanka’s first Ramsar site, a wetland of international importance for migratory waterfowl, in 1990, because of its high bird species richness. The delicate ecological balance of these lagoons will be severely affected by the on-going Weheragala Reservoir project, which is designed to divert excess water from Manike Ganga River basin to Kirindi Oya River basin and the Malala Oya River basin development project. The main negative impacts are eutrophication, accumulation of pesticides and insecticides in the lagoons and siltation, and that lagoons will be converted to fresh water bodies. This research studied how to minimize these negative impacts using social, economic and engineering tools. The research findings are useful for researches, policymakers and decision-makers, who must find opportunities to improve farmers’ incomes and national food production, while and at the same time ensuring sustainable management of wetland ecosystems in Sri Lanka.Length: pp.1-6WetlandsLagoonsHabitatsIrrigated farmingEnvironmental degradation

Inherent Biological Adaptive Control of Feedback Gain of Circadian Rhythms in a Mathematical Model Stabilization of the Sustained Oscillations in a mRNA-Protein Model
Demirer, Oya (Arel Author)A mathematical model of cell-autonomous mammalian circadian clock is integrated into an adaptive control scheme. We analyze circadian clock rhythms with time delayed biophysically meaning parameter sets to generate self-oscillation behavior of a SCN neuron (Suprachiasmatic Nucleus Neuron). We demonstrate how an adaptive control scheme is utilized to stabilize of time varying mRNA and protein expression levels. Biological system optimizes the control parameters of coupled ODE with respect to minimizing energy metabolism or the time to satisfy the control goal. We will also investigate the robustness of inherent control mechanism to perturbations of coupled ODE system
Women types in Oya Baydar's novels
Oya Baydar has handled many social and political topics in her works that recently occured in Turkey. In addittion to her author identity, as a sociologist she has given important place to the woman heroes in her works. We can see in her six novels that we analyzed, she gives more details about female heroes than males. Regardless of their social classes, political preferences and education levels, women live by the rules of men. It is possible to analyze these women who are guiding their lifes in terms of male-female relationships in four groups: women in terms of cast, women in terms of education, women in terms of policy and women in terms of relationships. The most comman type of woman in her novels is socialist and educated woman. However it is seen, that these women are unhappy and unsuccessful in their family lives as a result of refusing the social gender roles that is given by patriarchal system
Chromatin modifications of hTERT gene in hTERT-immortalized human mesenchymal stem cells upon exposure to radiation
Regulation of telomerase activity is thought to participate in the cellular response to ionizing radiation. Epigenetic mechanisms play a role in this regulation, as well as other mechanisms such as transcription, phosphorylation, etc. Here, we investigated chromatin modifications in telomerase promoter upon exposure to ionizing radiation in human mesenchymal stem cells (hMSC) and telomerase-immortalized hMSCs (hMSC-telo1) together with a hMSC-telo1 cell line in which TRF2 expression was partially repressed (siTRF2 hMSC-telo1). Histone methylations and acetylations were compared in all cell lines after exposure to various doses of ionizing radiation (0.1, 1, 2.5 and 15 Gy) using chromatin immunoprecipitation assay. hTERT gene was shown to be quickly regulated through H3, H4 acetylations, as well as with H3K4 and H3K9 methylations, following radiation exposure, although the kinetic of hMSC-telo1 cells were different, indicative of the higher radioresistivity of these cells. To the author's surprise, there was an upregulation of endogenous telomerase activity in the hMSC-telo1 cells, even though the cells had already expressed high levels of ectopic hTERT. Our results show that telomerase regulation is one of the primary actions in response to damage and epigenetic factors play a major role in this regulation. Our results also suggested that partial silencing of TRF2 enhances the radiosensitivity of these cells, and endogenous telomerase is upregulated upon radiation, even under ectopic expression of hTERT in these cells
A numerical bifurcation analysis of circadian rhythms in pacemaker neurons
Oya, Demirer (Arel Author) --- Conference: Electric Electronics, Computer Science, Biomedical Engineerings' Meeting (EBBT) : İstanbul, 26-27 April 2016.In this study, we analyze a known minimal but biologically realistic mathematical model from system biology in order to gain more understanding of how circadian oscillations are simulated using a coupled delay differential equation model. We analyze biochemically and biophysically detailed mathematical model of gene transcription and protein synthesis which has been previously presented in the biological literature. The model has an ability of generating circadian clock rhythms to generate self-sustained or damped oscillation behavior of a Suprachiasmatic nucleus (SCN) Pacemaker Neuron under biophysically meaning parameter sets. The model takes the form of coupled DDE (delay differential equation) with time varying mRNA and protein abundances. We will also rescale time variable of coupled DDE system reducing into coupled ODE system which is different from current model
Gene expression of transcription factor NFATc1 in periodontal diseases
Belibasakis GN, Emingil G, Saygan B, Turkoglu O, Atilla G, Bostanci N. Gene expression of transcription factor NFATc1 in periodontal diseases. APMIS 2011; 119: 167-172. Periodontitis is a disease of infectious aetiology that causes inflammatory destruction of the tooth-supporting tissues. Activated T cells are central to the pathogenesis of the disease, by producing receptor activator of nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) ligand (RANKL) that stimulates bone resorption. Antigenic activation of T cells is regulated by the induction of transcription factor nuclear factor of activated T cells, cytoplasmic 1 (NFATc1). There is as yet no information on the potential involvement of NFATc1 in periodontal diseases. This study aimed to investigate NFATc1 gene expression levels in periodontal diseases, and analyse the potential correlation with RANKL expression and clinical periodontal parameters. In this cross-sectional study, gingival tissue biopsies were obtained from healthy (n = 10) and periodontally diseased (n = 58) sites. NFATc1 and RANKL gene expression levels in these samples were analysed by quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction. Compared with healthy subjects, patients with gingivitis, chronic and aggressive periodontitis, exhibited higher NFATc1 expression, which proved to be statistically significant in the periodontitis groups. NFATc1 and RANKL expression levels strongly correlated with each other, and with clinical periodontal parameters. The increased expression of NFATc1 in periodontitis denotes a role for this transcription factor in the pathogenesis of the disease
