A study of Tawfiq al-Hakim’s Equilibrium doctrine and philosophical narratives

Tawfiq al-Hakim is known across the Arab world as a pioneer dramatist. He is one of many misunderstood writers and philosophers. My aim is to introduce him to the English-speaking public in order to shed some light on a specific period known to be one of the best in Egypt intellectually and culturally. Former President Nasser’s ideologies, and those of former President Sadat such as his “open-door” policy to the West, have contributed positively to the forming of an intellectual renaissance in Egypt. This rich period in Egyptian history is one that can directly shed light on the literary and philosophical contributions of al-Hakim, and on the social and cultural issues that should be revisited in order to gain an understanding of the problems that face Egyptians today. With this said, it is my hope that by reviving al-Hakim’s philosophical doctrines and by examining the major issues he addresses in his texts, I will be able to explain and clarify some misconceptions about this author, his philosophy and his work. I would also like to show ways in which his distinctive doctrine of equilibrium can be of use to us both in the East and the West. The objectives, accordingly, are twofold: (1) To introduce and critically examine al-Hakim’s equilibrium doctrine; and, (2) To identify the philosophical traits and Western influences that had an impact on his character and philosophy. The core problem that this work will indirectly address is the problem of how philosophy in the Arab world, according to Sari Nusseibeh’s article “The Arab World: What role for philosophy?” has been blatantly used as a tool in order to defend one version or another of the religious beliefs of those who pursued it. I ask what specific role a philosopher or intellectual can play in his or her society and how his philosophy can be put to use. This question is one that has been long forgotten in the Arab world. Freeing the Arab world from the colonizer, back in the 1930s, was clearly a goal for many intellectuals. Today, freeing the Arab mind by introducing a philosophy or an ideology that can be of use to the Muslim world as well as to the West would be a great task to accomplish

Écrire ‹ l’oral › dans Texaco de Patrick Chamoiseau

AbstractIn this analysis, I investigate the coexistence of the oral and writing in Texaco of Patrick Chamoiseau. I try first to explain how Chamoiseau arrived to a certain synthesis between the two registers. Then I examine the objective of the author to develop such a synthesis between oral and writing in the universe of a text. In the case of Texaco, it is not only a matter of two ways of expression but also of two languages and two states of civilization. This expressive and linguistic lining does not depend only on the exile of many intellectuals and some other historical factors, but on a certain cultural alienation. Indeed, the Martinican identity oscillates between two spaces and hesitates between two languages. By this coexistence of the creole oral mode and the French writing, Chamoiseau tried to create a new style in the world of literary texts. On the other hand, this meeting of the different languages and registers creates a certain composition of elements that do not stand in a relation of opposition to each other, but of a tangle in order to communicate a world vision and to assert the original identity.</jats:p

    No full text
[This article explores the relationship between the literary field and journalistic reception that is governed by specific ideological trends. The complexity of this relationship turns the text into a social document liable to condemnation or praise. To illustrate this relationship, the article rereads the confiscation of the 1964 short story collection Safinat Hanan ila al-qamar (A Spaceship of Tenderness to the Moon) and its author Layla Baʻalbakki\u27s trial instigated by a brief condemnatory comment in the Egyptian magazine Sabah al-khayr. The article offers a discourse analysis of subsequent reviews with a focus on gender and the ramifications on the cultural milieu to reveal the play of power relations.

Despite the widespread of social media among all age groups in Arabic countries, the research directed towards Author Profiling (AP) is still in its early stages. This paper provides an Egyptian Dialect Gender Annotated Dataset (EDGAD) obtained from Twitter as well as a proposed text classification solution for the Gender Identification (GI) problem. The dataset consists of 70,000 tweets per gender. In text classification, a Mixed Feature Vector (MFV) with different stylometric and Egyptian Arabic Dialect (EAD) language-specific features is proposed, in addition to N-Gram Feature Vector (NFV). Ensemble weighted average is applied to the Random Forest (RF) with MFV and Logistic Regression (LR) with NFV. The achieved gender identification accuracy is 87.6%. Keywords: Text classification, Egyptian Arabic, Gender identification, Author profiling, Gender annotated datase

The study investigated impression and corporate image management through a qualitative analysis that included three social networking platforms (Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook). Four hundred-seven users of Egyptian telecommunications services participated. They used four service providers: Telecom Egypt, Vodafone, Orange, and Etisalat Misr. Primary data was collected during January - March 2023. According to the statistical analysis, there is a difference in impression management practices and corporate image creation in the Egyptian telecommunication industry. The author revealed the contribution of social media platforms to building corporate image via impression management. The change in impression management explains 74.3% of the difference in the corporate image. A study of the effective contribution of social media platforms to the company's image-building reveals the differences in platform user characteristics. The study’s limitation was one country's and one industry's scope. Therefore it is suggested to re-test raised hypotheses in other countries and industries

The present investigation aimed to evaluate the radiomitigative efficacy of the recombinant human erythropoietin (rhEPO) against acute radiation syndrome (ARS) in a rat model. Rats were irradiated with a single sublethal dose of γ- radiation (7 Gy; total body irradiation; TBI) at the 1st day of experimental course, then received EPO (5000 IU/kg; i.p) 24 hrs post irradiation, rats were observed for 30 days of survival analysis. Administration of EPO improved 30 days survival, alleviated TBI- induced myelosuppression and pancytopenia, by augmenting lymphocytes and WBCs in the peripheral blood of rats, while bone marrow (BM) and spleen cellularity were restored. EPO post exposure treatment alleviated hepatotoxicity biomarkers and restored splenic function. EPO abrogated radiation- induced oxidative stress through the upregulation of the cholinergic anti-inflammatory nicotinic acetylcholine receptor (α-7-nAChR) and the pro-survival janus kinase-2 and signal transducers and activators of transcription JAK-2/STAT-3 signaling mediated via enhancing nuclear factor erythroid-2 related factor-2 (Nrf-2) cytoprotective machinery in liver and spleen of irradiated rats. Moreover, EPO treatment prevented hepatic and splenic apoptosis. In conclusion, the present study establishes the implication of α-7-nAChR- JAK-2/STAT-3- Nrf-2 signaling cascade in the radiomitigative potential of EPO against ARS.The accepted manuscript in pdf format is listed with the files at the bottom of this page. Oxygen Nanodistributions in Cobalt-Iron Electrodeposited Thin Films: Some Effect on Magnetic Properties- High Resolution Analytical Electron Microscopy

abstract: Soft magnetic alloys play a significant role for magnetic recording applications and highly sensitivity magnetic field sensors. In order to sustain the magnetic areal density growth, development of new synthesis techniques and materials is necessary. In this work, the effect of oxygen incorporation during electrodeposition of CoFe alloys on magnetic properties, magnetoresistance and structural properties has been studied. Understanding the magnetic properties often required knowledge of oxygen distribution and structural properties of the grown films. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) was a powerful tool in this study to correlate the oxygen-distribution nanostructure to the magnetic properties of deposited films. Off-axis electron holography in TEM was used to measure magnetic domain wall width in the deposited films. Elemental depth profiles of Fe, Co, O were investigated by secondary ion mass spectroscopy (SIMS). Magnetic properties have been determined by superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) measurements. Oxygen content in the CoFe deposited films was controlled by electrolyte composition. Films were deposited on Si 100 substrates and on other substrates such as Cu and Al. However, a good film quality was achieved on Si substrate. Electron energy loss and x-ray spectroscopies showed that the low oxygen films contained intragranular Fe2+ oxide (FeO) particles and that the high oxygen films contained intergranular Fe3+ (Fe2O3) along grain boundaries. The films with oxide present at the grain boundary had significantly increased coercivity, magnetoresistance and reduced saturation magnetization relative to the lower oxygen content films with intragranular oxide. The differences in magnetic properties between low oxygen and high oxygen concentration films were attributed to stronger mobile domain wall interactions with the grain boundary oxide layers. The very high magnetoresistance values were achieved for magnetic devices with nanocontact dimension < 100 nm and oxide incorporation in this nanoconfined geometry. The content of oxide phase in nanocontact was controlled by concentration of the Fe3+ ions in the electrodeposition solution. Magnetic device integrity was improved by varying amount of additive into plating solution. These results indicated that electrodeposited CoFe nanocontact is a novel class of materials with large application for magnetic field sensors.Dissertation/ThesisPh.D. Materials Science and Engineering 201
