Presentation of social stories with tablet computers in social skill instruction for students with autism spectrum disorder1
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is an advanced and complex developmental disability. Furthermore, it is described as a disorder that occurs during the early developmental stages, characterized by limited, repetitive behavioral patterns and interests or activities, problems in various forms of social communication and interaction that persist throughout life. The problems that children with ASD experience in social communication and interaction skills also lead to problems in acquisition of social skills. Children with ASD experience mutual social communication difficulties, as well problems in non-verbal social behavior and establishing social relationships. Social stories are written with a perspective of a child in a special format to explain social situations to children with ASD, to instruct social skills and allow them to cope with difficulties in social situations. In the present study, the effectiveness of social story tablet computer software on the acquisition of social skills by children with ASD was analyzed. Two male and 1 female 5-7 years old students who were diagnosed with ASD were included in the study. The social stories developed by the authors before the instruction were adapted to tablet computer environment. The teachers employed in the institution and were the instructors of the students in the study group were informed about the presentation of these stories to the children with ASD and the application. The “sharing” behavior was selected among the social stories that were developed based on the course requirements. In the first two study sessions, the authors provided feedback for the teachers who conducted the study. The study was conducted with a single-subject design with multiple probe model with probe conditions across participants design. The study findings demonstrated that social story tablet computer program was effective on the acquisition of social skills by children with ASD. An increase in the sharing behavior of all three participants was observed. Furthermore, three participating teachers expressed positive views on the social story tablet computer software
The effectiveness and efficiency of social stories and video modelling on teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder
The purpose of this study is to compare the effectiveness and efficacy of computer based social stories and video modeling while teaching social skills to children with autism spectrum disorder. The study was conducted with one child with autism spectrum disorder who is 6 years old. The target behavior was starting and carrying on playing skills independently. The research desing of the study is alternating treatment design. The results of the research indicated that video modeling was more effective to increase playing skills indepedently than social stories. Maintanence probes were conducted 3., 5. and 7. weeks after intervention was completed and the maintanence results indicated that the skill was going on. Also social validity data of the study was obtained doing descriptive analysis. The result of the social validity findings showed that the mother found the social stories and video modeling effective
Examining virtual reality interventions for social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder: A systematic review
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that is characterized by limitations in social communication and interaction, self-repetitive behaviors, and the presence of limited interests. The prevalence of ASD, which typically emerges in the first years of life, is increasing at an alarming rate due to multiple factors, including the broadening of diagnostic criteria, heightened public awareness, and more frequent diagnoses among women and adults. Over the years, experts have invested considerable time and effort in developing educational scenarios for children with ASD. However, they have faced challenges replicating certain scenarios-such as emergencies, crowded public transportation, or restaurant environments-because recreating these exact conditions in real-world settings is difficult or cost-prohibitive. This has consequently compelled experts to seek out supplementary intervention methods that are more suitable and accessible. Virtual reality (VR), which has the capacity to integrate the physical and virtual realms, represents one such alternative intervention method. In this study, a systematic review of studies employing VR technology in social skills interventions for individuals with ASD was conducted, and 31 studies were included. The findings indicate the potential benefits of VR applications focusing on the social skills of individuals with ASD. Additionally, this research elucidates the limitations of the studies and offers suggestions for future research
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
