Bir İstanbul semtinin tarihsel panoraması: ondokuzuncu yüzyıl sonundan 2000'lere Cihangir

    No full text
This study can be seen as a contribution to the history of a cosmopolitan Istanbul neighborhood, Cihangir, where Greeks, Armenians, Jews, Levantines, Turks, and other Muslim and non-Muslim inhabitants lived in harmony for centuries. Based on oral history narratives by older and new inhabitants of the neighborhood as well as primary sources identified by the author, the present study aims to shed light on its cosmopolitan fabric and the changes it has undergone throughout the republican history of Turkey. It reflects its author’s perspective which situates the story of Cihangir within the framework of the story of the decline of cosmopolitan Istanbul due to the Turkification policies of the nationalist state. After a series of regrettable events like the notorious Wealth Tax of 1942, the 6-7 September riots in 1955, and the 1964 decree for the deportation of Greek nationals, Cihangir lost its original human fabric with the gradual departure of its non-Muslim inhabitants, specifically the Greeks, who were the main population in the neighborhood. It also presents the cosmopolitan mahalle life in Cihangir, especially in the 1950s and the 1960s. After a period of déclassement, however, Cihangir was reinvented in a globalizing metropolis, Istanbul. This study also discusses the process of gentrification in Cihangir and its effects on the neighborhood and the daily mahalle life there. Present day Cihangir is a culturally heterogeneous but ethnically less mixed neighborhood embracing the few remaining Greeks, Armenians, Jews and Levantines. However, it is a neighborhood still living together with its past.

The Presence of Mechanoreceptors and Cortical Connections Support a Proprioceptive Role for Knee Plicae

    No full text
Purpose: To determine histologically and electrophysiologically whether the plicae have a proprioceptive function. Methods: Tissue samples were obtained from 36 plicae in 29 knees (including 7 bilateral cases). The samples included 20 suprapatellar, 10 medial patellar, and 6 infrapatellar plicae. Kim and Choe's classification was used to describe the patterns of the plicae. Results: Twenty-nine patients who underwent knee arthroscopy were included in the study. Of these, 14 knees were on the left side and 15 on the right. The patients’ ages ranged from 12 to 78 years (mean age, 42 years). Golgi tendon organs (type III) were the most frequently observed mechanoreceptors. No free nerve endings (type IV) were identified in any of the plicae. Electrical stimulation of 4 plicae and 2 anterior cruciate ligaments was performed, and accurate, expected responses were obtained. Conclusions: Histologic and neurophysiologic findings have shown the presence of mechanoreceptors in the knee plicae. Following the identification of these mechanoreceptors, the establishment of a neural connection between the plicae and the cerebral cortex suggests that the plicae are functional structures involved in proprioception. However, free nerve endings were evaluated in limited numbers and could not be shown. Clinical Relevance: Plicae in the knee are considered rudimentary structures with the potential to become pathological. However, the plicae may not be useless structures but may improve the proprioceptive ability of the knee

Case Report: Metastatic involvement of the acromioclavicular joint in a patient with papillary carcinoma of the ureter

    No full text
Ureteral papillary carcinoma is a rare subtype of urothelial carcinoma, ranking fourth among cancers following prostate (or breast) cancer, lung cancer, and colorectal cancer. Although previous studies have documented bone metastases mainly in the pelvis, spine, ribs, and femur, this case report presents the first recorded instance of metastasis occurring in the acromioclavicular joint. A 62-year-old woman with a history of left flank pain and macroscopic hematuria underwent a left nephroureterectomy, which revealed ureteral papillary carcinoma. Three years later, she reported left shoulder pain, leading to the discovery of a metastatic lesion in the distal clavicle. Approximately 9 cm of metastatic bone was resected while preserving nearby nerve and vascular structures. The resulting bone defect was grafted with a 9-cm bone graft removed from the middle third of the fibula. This case report underscores the importance of considering distant metastases, even in atypical locations, in patients with ureteral papillary carcinoma and aims to share the entire treatment journey and insights gained

    A new secure 2PL real-time concurrency control algorithm (ES2PL)

A secure concurrency control algorithms must be devoid of covert channels originating from data conflicts between transactions, in addition to ensuring database integrity. Current secure concurrency control algorithms mistreat transactions with higher access classes. Because it better solves the priority inversion problem. A widely used concurrency control algorithm is the two-phase locking with high priority (2 PL-HP). The inclusion of cyclic restart, deadlock, unnecessary abort, pseudo-priority inversion, and starvation, on the other hand, may reduce its performance. In this paper, a new enhanced of secure two-phase locking protocol with multilevel secure distributed database systems is presented, the idea of enhanced secure Two-Phase locking protocol by adding the security level to assign the priority to the transaction. The enhanced add a secure manager to decide the level of the security and give the instruction to process the transaction in real lock with data x/virtual lock with version data x0 or decided to Abort the transaction based on the security level. The suggested study intends to reduce transaction miss rate by addressing the following issues: deadlock by splitting the execution stage into locking and processing phases, it reduces unnecessary cycle restart, transaction aborts by checking the security priority level (high, medium, low), and generating virtual lock and versions data. Finally, simulation performance confirms that improvement in transactions miss's percent and reduction in transactions' rollbacks compared to other secure concurrency control. © 2022 The Author

Exploring Reciprocal Relationships of Land-Uses in a Historical Mixed-Use Quarter of Istanbul: Measuring mixed-use patterns of Cihangir

    No full text
In this paper we explore the land-use patterns of a historical mixed-use quarter of Istanbul by focusing on the reciprocal relationships of housing and commercial uses. We are concerned with the distribution of land-use patterns based on spatial adjacency and land-use patterns within the buildings. We measure reciprocal relationships of housing and commercial uses by using GIS and Data Mining in a complementary way and we test if we can re-generate these relationships by evolutionary computation to further support land-use allocation in inner city regenerations or new urban developments.Architectural Engineering +TechnologyArchitecture and The Built Environmen

Güngör, Faruk (Dogus Author) -- Hasanov, Mahir H. (Dogus Author)A canonical variable coefficient nonlinear Schrödinger equation with a four-dimensional symmetry group containing SL(2, ℝ) group as a subgroup is considered. This typical invariance is then used to transform by a symmetry transformation a known solution that can be derived by truncating its Painlevé expansion and study blow-ups of these solutions in the L p-norm for p > 2, L ∞-norm and in the sense of distributions

Urban Development Process and Creative Clustering: the Film Industry in Soho and Beyoglu

    No full text
The article focuses on the urban development process that contributes to creative clustering of the film industry in Soho and Beyoglu. It explains how different policy-led and organic development processes have shaped location patterns of creative clusters. It also discusses the role of urban design in the formation, growth and sustainability of creative clustering. The findings of this cross-national study suggest that the overall quality of place that attracts and retains creative clusters is related to place-making processes, including both policy-led interventions and organic dynamics of the places. The study strongly suggests that sustainability of creative clustering results from the successful integration of public policy with organic change and policy-led initiatives, if informed by, and backed by local community and business interests, which can counterbalance the negative effect of market forces on clusters. Although there is little that urban design itself can do to initiate clustering, once the conditions favouring clustering have developed organically, then urban design, stewardship and coordinated action between the urban actors all have a role in supporting the continued existence of co-location and economic prosperity of these clusters.Soho Society; Westminster City Council; West End Community Trust; Cihangir Neighbourhood Association; Beyoglu Municipality Planning Department; International Office; Department of Architecture at the University of NottinghamThe author would like to thank Professor Tim Heath, Dr. Katharina Borsi, Professor Taner Oc, Professor Ali Madanipour, Dr. Koray Velibeyoglu, for their contribution. Comparison of interobserver and Intraobserver reliability of alpha angle measurements using different types of circles for femoroacetabular impingement syndrome

    No full text
ABSTRACT The alpha angle is a radiological measurement that has been proposed for the detection of cam morphology in patients suspected of femoroacetabular impingement syndrome (FAIS). After analysing published articles on FAIS, it is apparent that different types of circles are used in the measurement of alpha angles. To determine the interobserver and intraobserver reliability of alpha angle values measured using different types of circles on a 45∘ Dunn lateral radiograph in patients with symptomatic FAIS. The 45∘ Dunn lateral radiographs of the operated hips of patients who underwent hip preservation surgery in Dokuz Eylül University Hospital between 2014 and 2017 were evaluated retrospectively. Alpha angles were measured manually with transparent goniometers using three different circle types: thin full circle, thin-dashed circle, and thick full circle, and eye estimation without circle insertion. Measurements were made separately by an orthopaedist and a radiologist. A second measurement was made by the radiologist 1 month later for intraobserver reliability. Interobserver reliability for the thin full circle, thin-dashed circle, thick circle, and eye estimation (ICC = 0.645, 0.525, 0.494, and 0.588, respectively). Intraobserver reliability for the thin, thin-dashed, thick line, and eye estimation (ICC= 0.626, 0.681, 0.681, and 0.462 respectively). Interobserver difference of mean values of alpha angles for thin full, thin-dashed, thick full, and eye estimation were 2.7∘, 0.9∘, 1.1∘, and 2.3∘, respectively. Intraobserver differences between measurements were 1.5∘, 0.9∘, 0∘, and 1.6∘, respectively. Our study demonstrated that interobserver reliability is highest when measurements are made using a thin full circle.</p
