An analytical study of the theatre of the Syrian playwright Saadallah Wannous, with particular emphasis on the plays written after the 1967 war

This study is an examination of the life and work of the Syrian dramatist Saadallah Wannous (1941-1997). Wannous's name is virtually unknown in the West; only two academic studies of any significance have appeared in English on this eminent and challenging writer, who was honoured by UNESCO at the end of his life. Even in the Arab world his standing rests largely upon his celebrity as a cultural icon, since professional performances of his plays are rare due to the decline of the theatre in the region, and little attention has been devoted to theatre studies by Arab academics. The two studies in English do not attempt to be comprehensive but focus on particular stages of Wannous's career. This study is, therefore, the first to encompass the full range of Wannous's work. To do so it combines an account of his life which seeks to comprehend the various forces that shaped his thinking with an analysis of his dramatic works. The study concentrates on the plays written in the years following the trauma inflicted on the Arab world by the catastrophe of their defeat in the Arab-Israeli war of June, 1967. Wannous's career can be divided into three phases: the immature plays of his young manhood which are influenced by European models and generally focus on the social condition of the individual; his middle period - the `theatre of politicisation', when his Marxist politics were the main factor shaping his drama; and his late works, which are characterised by an extraordinary freedom of thought and expression. The introduction places Wannous in his historical and sociocultural context and provides a brief background explaining the literary and theatrical traditions of the Arab world that influenced his activity as a dramatist. Each phase is then examined in turn and the plays are analysed in accordance with the focus of the study. This means that emphasis is given to the middle period, but no significant work is neglected. The study aims to trace the trajectory of Wannous's development using a variety of sources: the plays themselves, Wannous's own journalism and critical writings, interviews with his widow, his friends and colleagues, and numerous journals, books and articles, some of which contain important interviews with Wannous that shed light on his thought and ways of working. Use is also made of the two studies mentioned above. The study shows that Wannous's theatre was influenced by the key political, social and cultural developments of his time, and that he constantly sought to find forms that would express those transformations in dramatic terms

In this note we show a fixed point theorem for multivalued Caristi's type mappings on a large class of complete fuzzy metric spaces. In fact, this result allows us to characterize complete fuzzy metric spaces with continuous t-norm greater than or equal to the Lukasiewicz t-norm.The third named author thanks the support of the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness of Spain, Grant MTM2012-37894-C02-01.Abbas, M.; Ali, B.; Romaguera Bonilla, S. Proactive stakeholder management: a descriptive and instrumental analysis

    No full text
In the last few decades, an important theme in organizational theory has been the increased organizational vulnerability as they operate in an intrusive environment. No matter how theorists and scholars try to solve the issue of environmental interference, there is unanimity in the belief that organizations are now influenced by an increasing number of entities, and therefore, firms need to accommodate specific demands of these several groups. This extra burden on the resources of individual organizations, in an ever-changing environment, necessitates the need for these firms to have coalitions in order to survive, and the need to engage in multifaceted and intricate ‘transactions’ within their environment. The overall argument of the study is that business organizations need to have a proactive stakeholder orientation to create structures and mechanisms that will lead to consensus building and mutual benefits for organizations and their stakeholders. The study also explores four research questions: Who are proactive stakeholder organizations? What are the dynamics of stakeholder management? How are stakeholder organizations created and perpetuated? And what are the strategic benefits of stakeholder management? The study is a qualitative inductive study that utilizes the precepts and techniques of grounded theory development and case study methodologies. The data in the study is based on 52 in-depth interviews, observations and field notes accumulated through site visits, organizational documents like annual reports, employee manuals, and policy manuals etc., organizational websites, and newspaper and journal articles. The study finds that: proactive stakeholder management is a viable business strategy; stakeholder organizations are engineered through people management policies; organizational culture and trust between the organization and its stakeholders plays crucial role in creating proactive stakeholder organizations; organizational stakeholders are recognized based on both dynamic and fixed features; conflict resolution in proactive stakeholder organizations is based on a balanced approach; and there is a dynamic relationship between value based business and entrepreneurship. The study contributes to research on proactive stakeholder management by studying the stakeholder phenomenon as a whole in its social context.Ph. Estimation of Value of Time for a Congested Network – A Case Study of the National Highway, Karachi

    No full text
AbstractTraffic congestion in mega cities is a common phenomenon for developing countries. Numerous studies on congestion cost estimation, that aim to quantify their monetary losses, have been conducted. Value of Time (VOT) assessment through utility maximizing theory and choice models are abundantly applied in transport literature. However, estimating VOT on congested network is not widely applied yet. To recognize the difference under normal and congested network, the current study focuses on VOT estimation for work trips in an extremely congested network. The focus of this research is to conduct a VOT estimation of the National Highway, Karachi. It connects Karachi city with Port Qasim Industrial area and the rest of the country. A large amount of freight transport to and from the port is also observed on this road. The National highway, being the only link to commute to this industrial area, is therefore under excessive traffic congestion.A stated preference (SP) survey was conducted at various industries located in this stretch. The respondents were asked about current travel practices and their (stated) preferences based on hypothetical -though realistic- travel attributes. A choice set of four alternative modes based on the currently used mode was presented to each individual. A Multinomial Logistics Regression (MNL) Model was developed for data analysis. As perceived, the results revealed a strong impact of travel time and travel cost on the (dis)utility of travel. These results can be utilized by policy makers to reduce congestion, monetary and time losses through efficient transport planning

This article is a mainly iconographic study of five paintings that were signed by or attributed to ‘Ali Qoli Jebadar. This so-called farangi sazi- artist was active at the Safavid court of Shah ‘Abbas II (r. 1642-1666) and Shah Soleyman (r. 1666-1694). With this study the author wants to demonstrate that ‘Ali Qoli Jebadar observed and “registered” the reality of daily life at the Safavid court, rather than depicting an ideal, timeless world. She does this by confronting certain subjects, obje..

Soil Nutrient Availability, Plant Nutrient Uptake, and Wild Blueberry (Vaccinium angustifolium Ait.) Yield in Response to N-Viro Biosolids and Irrigation Applications

    No full text
We compared the impact of surface broadcasted N-Viro biosolids and inorganic fertilizer (16.5% Ammonium sulphate, 34.5% Diammonium phosphate, 4.5% Potash, and 44.5% s and/or clay filler) applications on soil properties and nutrients, leaf nutrient concentration, and the fruit yield of lowbush blueberry under irrigated and nonirrigated conditions during 2008-2009 at Debert, NS, Canada. Application rates of N-Viro biosolids were more than double of inorganic fertilizer applied at a recommended N rate of 32 kg ha−1. The experimental treatments NI: N-Viro with irrigation, FI: inorganic fertilizer with irrigation, N: N-Viro without irrigation, and F: inorganic fertilizer without irrigation (control) were replicated four times under a randomized complete block design. The NI treatment had the highest OM (6.68%) followed by FI (6.32%), N (6.18%), and F (4.43%) treatments during the year 2008. Similar trends were observed during 2009 with the highest soil OM values (5.50%) for NI treatment. Supplemental irrigation resulted in a 21% increase in the ripe fruit yield. Nonsignificant effect of fertilizer treatments on most of the nutrient concentrations in soil and plant leaves, and on ripe fruits yield reflects that the performance of N-Viro was comparable with that of the inorganic fertilizer used in this study

The action functional on dual Legendrian submanifolds of the loop space of a contact three dimensional closed manifold

    No full text
The main object of my dissertation is the study of the action functional of a contact form on a three dimensional manifold. This is part of a long program started by Professor A. Bahri [3], [4] in constructing a contact homology giving information about the number of periodic orbits of the Reeb vector field, that is an attempt to approach the Weinstein conjecture for 3-manifolds. Even though it appears to be proved by C. Taubes in a series of paper (see for instance [39] for more details). Given a closed 3-dimensional manifold, we prove an S1 homotopy equivalence between a subspace Cß of Legendrian curves and the free loop space. This space appears to be convenient from a variational point of view, in contact form geometry and used in the approach developed by A. Bahri. Indeed, it is the right space of variations on which we study the action functional. In a second part we study the Fredholm assumption for a modifed version of the action functional on the variational space Cß. That is, whether the functional is Fredholm or not. We take here the text-book case-study of a sequence of overtwisted contact forms on the 3-sphere introduced by Gonzalo and Varela [26]. We show that the Fredholm assumption does not hold. This is done by studying the dynamics of the contact form along a vector field on its kernel. We also prove the existence of a foliation stuck between the contact form and its Legendre dual in the part where they have opposite orientation. In the last part we present an explicit computation of the Bahri contact homology for a sequence of tight contact structures in the torus. We also extend this result to the case of torus bundles over S1. The homology that we find, allows us in particular to confirm the fact that the contact structures are not isotopic since it has different values for each structure.Ph. Espiritualidade política no governo de Khomeini: o sistema político do Irã após a revolução de 1979

    No full text
Abstract : The purpose of this dissertation is to understand the dynamics of today's Iranian political system, designed and built during the 1970s and 1980s. From a series of confrontations with the monarchy, which caused several moments of tension in the country and weakened the role of the Shah, the Iranian political system and the entire model of social organization began to be questioned and rethought. Many were the prominent personalities in this process, including Khomeini, who, with his charismatic speech, managed to gather around him different groups and social classes in Iran, strengthening his project of Islamic government by rescuing the essence of Islam. Therefore, Khomeini and his major works were used as source of research for the construction of this study. In addition, many were the intellectuals, researchers and scientists who followed the events in Iran at the time, among them Michel Foucault, who traveled the country and wrote, in excited manner, about the testimony of the idea of political spirituality in Iran. Foucault is one of the authors used in this work, aiming mainly to suggest a new way of interpreting the Iranian event. Equally important was the contact with Islamic authors such as Ali Gheissari, Vali Nasr, Benazir Bhutto, Sayyid Abdul A'la Al - Maudidi , among others. These authors were critical to keep this work within its main purpose: to present a non-ethnocentric version of Iranian revolutionary movement and its outcomes. After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, these factors - the role of Khomeini, the rescue of traditional and political Islam and concept of political spirituality -were and are fundamental to make us understand the emergence of the Islamic Republic and the Iranian new political system. Understand the specifics of Muslim society that unfold in a new way of being, of experiencing, is essential for understanding the dynamics and tensions of many Muslim countries and their relations with the West
