Prostate cancer: Diabetes and prostate cancer--an open debate.

    No full text
A recent meta-analysis evaluating the relationship between type 2 diabetes mellitus and prostate cancer provides strong evidence to support an inverse association between the two conditions. However, the influence of factors such as severity, duration and treatment of diabetes, and the influence of other metabolic disorders should also be considered and investigated further. An ethno-computational approach to friendship in SNS

This paper focuses on how different configurations of privacy settings, content-sharing and culture traits display affect the formation of online friendship networks. By adopting an innovative ethno-computational methodology (as developed in Tubaro & Casilli, 2010), we draw on a participant observation carried out on the popular SNS Facebook to subsequently inform an agent-based model. The ethnographic phase suggests the hypothesis that culture traits display plays a crucial role in the creation of ties and is motivated by social capital maximisation. This hypothesis is problematized through the analysis of simulated network data. New dynamics emerge from the computational interaction of agents, such as 1) a tension between bridging and bonding dynamics; 2) relevance of privacy settings; 3) anomie. As homophily alone fails to account for tie formation and maintenance, Lahire’s (2004) notion of “cultural dissonance” – through which individuals adhere to their group culture while preserving their “self distinction” – can be productively conjured up to explain friendship formation in online social networks

Okadaic Acid and Other Diarrheic Toxins: Toxicological Profile

    No full text
Okadaic acid (OA) and its derivatives are toxic lipophilic polyethers produced by marine dinoflagellates and accumulated in filter-feeding organisms, where they can undergo biotransformation. The ingestion of marine shellfish contaminated by these toxins causes a gastrointestinal illness in humans known as diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP). OA and its analogues are weak tumor promoters and specific inhibitors of serine/threonine protein phosphatases. Inhibition of these enzymes affects various cellular processes, including the events at the basis of diarrhea and tumor promotion, although other mechanisms of action cannot be excluded. Studies in rodents indicate that these diarrheic toxins are absorbed through the gastrointestinal tract and distributed in the whole body, inducing toxic effects. Their lethal oral doses after acute administration in mice are 2–5 times higher than intraperitoneal ones, with the small intestine and liver as main target organs, while repeated oral OA exposure affects mainly the forestomach, lymphoid organs, pancreas, and, at ultrastructural level, myocardium. The increasing number of toxicological studies on OA, including cytotoxicity, genotoxicity, neurotoxicity, and tumor promotion, suggests that the adverse effects of this compound and/or its analogues could not be limited to acute hazards related to diarrhea induction but can also pose a significant risk after sub(chronic) exposure. Thus, further studies are needed to assess the adverse effects of long-term exposure to low doses of diarrheic toxins. Moreover, periodic monitoring of seafood and harmful algal species in the seawater is recommended to protect public health from foodborne poisonings and to minimize negative economic impacts to the shellfish industry

Tubaro: “A Multiview Trinocular System for Automatic 3D Object Modeling and Rendering

    No full text
For several applications of close-range photogrammetry, there is a growing interest in systems that are able to automatically perform a 3-D reconstruction of objects from stereo correspondences on CCD camera views. For such applications, a full-3D reconstruction of the object is often very desirable. In fact, most automatic systems for 3-D reconstruction based on stereo matching can only reconstruct the front side of the imaged scene. In order to obtain a full-3D reconstruction, it is necessary to observe the scene from several significant viewpoints. Furthermore, an exact determination of position and orientation of the cameras for all considered viewpoints (camera-motion) becomes crucial. In this paper we present a low-cost, high-accuracy, full-3D reconstruction system based on a calibrated set of three standard-resolution CCD cameras. No special positioning devices are needed as the camera-motion is retrieved for each position of the trinocular system from stereo-matching of unconstrained fiducial marks
