Investigation of the effect of chronic pain on mental resilience and quality of life of patients with chronic kidney disease
No full textBackground: People with Chronic Kidney Disease stage 5 face quite a lot changes in their quality of life due to painful sings and symptoms of the disease, the changes in mental status, the interventions needed and the new conditions in their everyday life following the dialysis programme. Objectives: The present study aimed at examining the effect of chronic pain on resilience and quality of life of people on maintance in-center haemodialysis. Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study of 361 adults on haemodialysis in Northern Greece was conducted using the Connor-Davidson Resilience Scale (CD-RISC), the Pain Self-Efficacy Questionnaire (PSEQ), and the Kidney Disease Quality of Life (KDQOL-36) questionnaires. Participants had to be on dialysis for more than 6 months, to be adults and to have a good level in Greek language. Results: The participants in the study were mainly males (69.7%, n=248), married (56%, n=202), with children (75.1%, n=271) and residing in urban areas (63.4%, n=229). The mean age of the participants was 61.1(±15,5) years old. Statistical analysis indicated that the higher the resilience, the higher the pain self-efficacy in the particular sample. In addition, symptoms and burden of kidney disease was less in participants with higher pain self-efficacy, resulting in better quality of life. Conclusion: The study concluded that the level of resilience is proportional to pain selfe-efficacy, regardless of age and gender. Healthcare professionals using appropriate assessment tools and implementing pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions can improve quality of life for people on haemodialysis.Εισαγωγή: Τα άτομα με Χρόνια Νεφρική Νόσο σταδίου 5 αντιμετωπίζουν αρκετές μεταβολές στην ποιότητα ζωής τους λόγω των επώδυνων σημείων και συμπτωμάτων της νόσου, της αλλαγής στην ψυχολογική κατάσταση, των παρεμβάσεων που απαιτούνται αλλά και των νέων συνθηκών της καθημερινότητας εξαιτίας του προγράμματος αιμοκάθαρσης. Σκοπός: Η παρούσα συγχρονική μελέτη παρατήρησης σκοπό είχε την διερεύνηση της επίδρασης του χρόνιου πόνου στην ψυχική ανθεκτικότητα και την ποιότητα ζωής ατόμων που υποβάλλονται σε αιμοκάθαρση. Υλικό και Μέθοδοι: Μελετήθηκαν 361 ενήλικα άτομα που υποβαλλόταν σε αιμοκάθαρση στη Βόρεια Ελλάδα. Η μελέτη πραγματοποιήθηκε με την Κλίμακα Ανθεκτικότητας των Connor-Davidson (CD-RISC), το Ερωτηματολόγιο της Αυτοαποτελεσματικότητας του Πόνου (PSEQ) και το ερωτηματολόγιο της Ποιότητας Ζωής των Ατόμων με Νεφρική Νόσο (KDQOL-36). Τα άτομα θα έπρεπε να υποβάλλονται σε αιμοκάθαρση για περισσότερους από 6 μήνες και να έχουν ένα καλό επίπεδο επικοινωνίας στην Ελληνική γλώσσα. Αποτελέσματα: Οι συμμετέχοντες ήταν κυρίως άνδρες (69.7%, n=248), παντρεμμένοι (56%, n=202), με παιδιά (75.1%, n=271) και κατοικούσαν σε αστική περιοχή (63.4%, n=229). Η μέση ηλικία των συμμετεχόντων ήταν 61.1(±15,5) έτη. Η στατιστική ανάλυση έδειξε ότι όσο υψηλότερη ήταν η ψυχική ανθεκτικότητα των ατόμων, τόσο υψηλότερη ήταν η αυτοαποτελεσματικότητα του πόνου. Επιπλέον, τα συμπτώματα και το φορτίο της νεφρικής νόσου μειωνόταν στα άτομα που είχαν υψηλότερη ανθεκτικότητα οδηγώντας σε καλύτερη ποιότητα ζωής. Συμπεράσματα: Η μελέτη κατέληξε στο ότι τα επίπεδα της ψυχικής ανθεκτικότητας είναι αναλογικά με την αυτοαποτελεσματικότητα του πόνου, ανεξάρτητα από την ηλικία και το φύλο. Οι επαγγελματίες υγείας χρησιμοποιώντας τα κατάλληλα εργαλεία αξιολόγησης και εφαρμόζοντας φαρμακολογικές και μη παρεμβάσεις είναι δυνατό να βελτιώσουν την ποιότητα ζωής των ατόμων σε αιμοκάθαρση
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
