Realism of the senses: a tendency in contemporary world cinema

This thesis proposes to examine the production of sensory realism in world cinema by using as case studies the cinemas of Carlos Reygadas (Mexico), Tsai Ming-liang (Taiwan) and Gus Van Sant (US). These cinemas are bound together through the hyperbolic application of the long take, which promotes a sensory viewing experience anchored in duration and the pure phenomenological presence of animate and inanimate matter. The theoretical underpinnings of the project are laid out in the Introduction, which addresses the alleged demise of realism in light of the emergence of digital technology and provides an overview of the ways the realist style has been historically theorised as connected to the sensory character of the cinematic experience. It further investigates the main aesthetic principles governing contemporary realist cinema and proposes a theorisation of its distinctive sensory mode of address. The thesis is divided into three different parts, which focus separately on each of the aforementioned filmmakers and their distinct realist projects, with emphasis given on their political impact and social significance. Part I is dedicated to Carlos Reygadas’s oeuvre, which, indebted to the transcendental cinemas of Tarkovsky, Bresson and Dreyer, complicates spirituality through a quasi-scientific take on materiality and carnality. Tsai Ming-liang is the subject of Part II, which examines his cinema’s auteurist, ultra-reflexive realist approach as recycling an aesthetics of the everyday in film through a focus on the sheer physicality of domestic spaces and the physiology of a grotesque body. Part III investigates Gus Van Sant’s recent incursion into an experimental-realist style as producing sensory explorations of mental processes of perception in line with the American avant-garde cinema ‘visionary’ tradition. The Conclusion contextualises and evaluates the aesthetic and political contribution of these cinemas as perpetuating, and reconfiguring, cinematic realism

A Study of How Long-Term Caretakers Maintain Residents’ Privacy

[[abstract]]As Taiwan’s population of elderly residents grows rapidly, the demand for related medical services has been on the rise. Among these, professional nursing and caretaking personnel make up the majority of the long-term caregiver force. However, the intensity of demand, long working hours and high staff turnover rates have posed a serious threat to both the quality of professional caretaking in organizations and to residents’ privacy. The objective of this study is to explore how long-term caretakers view the privacy of their charges. In addition, it will probe how the nature of different kinds of long-term caretaking affects the way staff maintain this privacy. This research has adopted a cross-sectional study judging sampling method and targeted long-term caretakers at 14 organizations in central Taiwan. Opportunity Algorithm Analysis and PASW18.0 were utilized to conduct descriptive statistics, independent samples t test, one way analysis of variance and multiple regression analysis. Study results showed that although long-term caretakers placed the highest value on maintaining physical privacy, this was the hardest aspect to practice, making it one of the crucial factors in regard to organizations’ maintenance of privacy. This in turn demonstrates that such data can become a force toward quality improvements. This study also found that the value caretaking staff placed on their charges’ privacy had a lot to do with wages, working hours and the benefits provided by their organizations. It’s clear that Opportunity Algorithm Analysis can help locate areas of assistance that staff members are most in need of in their work. It also suggests that management staff in these organizations can implement a reward system to encourage caretakers to raise privacy standards, utilizing existing resources within the organizations

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Distributive concerns when replacing a pay-as-you-go system with a fully funded system

The author uses a simulation model to quantify the impact on income distribution of having a neutral social security program that is fully funded replace a progressive social security program that redistributes income toward the poor but is financed by a pay-as-you-go method. He finds that if the original pay-as-you-go system is large enough to yield an income replacement rate of at least 40 percent for the middle class and 200 percent for the poor, then the proposed change helps the poor in the long run, so long as public debt does not increase by more than 40 percent of GDP during the transition. Such a reform allows an increase in the capital stock per worker, so in the long run the poor benefit more through higher real wages than they lose because progressive redistribution has ended. In the short run, however, a compensatory program is needed because the poor lose their subsidy before receiving the long-term benefit. In most cases, the 40 percent of GDP available from the increase in public debt is enough to finance a transfer program that compensates the poor in the"short"run (the first 50 years). The author concludes that concern about the welfare of the poor is unwarranted, in both the short and long runs, if the compensatory program is implemented.Environmental Economics&Policies,Economic Theory&Research,Safety Nets and Transfers,Services&Transfers to Poor,Rural Poverty Reduction

Urban Development ManagementPractice Chair Urban Area Developmen
