Long-range ordering of turbulent stresses in 2D turbulence

    No full text
We use filter-space techniques to study the geometric alignment of turbulent stresses and strain rates in an experimental quasi-two-dimensional weakly turbulent flow. When these stresses and strains are misaligned, the usual turbulent energy cascade can be suppressed; and more generally, the relative alignment of these two tensors determines the direction of the cascade. We show that as a function of length scale, the turbulent stress undergoes a transition to system-spanning order. However, by exploring analogously defined quantities in a field built from random Fourier modes, we see qualitatively similar behavior, suggesting that at least some of this ordering is purely kinematic. By comparing our results from the experiment and the random field, we highlight the role played by the orientation of the rate of strain tensor in the energy transfer process; additionally, our results allow us to pose several intriguing conjectures

What St. Paul Really Said (audio)

Paul was a zealous Jew whose explosive meeting with Jesus led him to believe that Israel’s God had declared Jesus to be the Messiah, and hence the true Lord of the who le world. N.T. Wright, Canon Theologian of Westminster Abbey and author of What St. Paul Really Said, determines the best way to understand Paul 20 centuries later. He will explain that Paul’s commission to be the “apostle to the Gentiles̶ 1; led him to hammer out a theology that was essentially a Jewish message for the pagan world, reshaped around Jesus, energized by the Spirit, and taking shape as a deeply personal and political message. Rediscovering his complex but breathtaking vision o f God, the world and the gospel is a central element in the urgent tasks facing today’s church

Environmental impact assessment of the pangasius sector in the Mekong Delta

    No full text
In the past seven years the export of white pangasius fillets grew fast. The culture method shifted to intensive production of striped catfish (Ca Tra) in deep ponds because this is more efficient than the pen and cage culture of Ca Basa. Today, striped catfish comprises more than 90 % of the culture. The increased production was achieved by producers investing in large ponds. The market chain is gearing towards vertical integration. Most farms keep fish at relatively high densities of 15 to 25 fish/m3 in ponds having a depth of up to 4m, and are advised to exchange daily 20 to 40% of the water. The sustainability of the sector is threatened due to the increased environmental pressure, and hampered by the growing cost of inputs and reduced farm-gate prices of the fish. The Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) intends to identify measures for preventing or mitigating the environmental impacts of catfish culture in the Mekong Delta. The EIA was a seven-step process during which we interacted twice with part of the main stakeholders. To build trust among the stakeholders from the sector, we conducted the scoping and goal setting with them

Enhanced magnetocaloric effects and tunable thermal hysteresis in transition metal pnictides

The effect of Co and Ni substitutions for Fe on the magnetocaloric properties of MnFe(P,Ge) compounds crystallizing in the hexagonal Fe2P type of structure was studied. It was found that, by changing composition, a small thermal hysteresis and a giant magnetocaloric effect can be obtained simultaneously in MnFe(P,Ge) compounds when the magnetic transition is controlled to be close to the border separating the first- and second-order transition regimes.Fundamental Aspects of Materials and Energy (FAME)Applied Science

Border walls, pushbacks, and the prohibition of collective expulsions: The Case of N.D: The N.T. v. Spain

    No full text
This essay explores the impact of N.D. and N.T. v. Spain on the ECHR system. The case deals with the immediate return of aliens at Melilla's border fence. Based on conceptual analysis, the author submits to critical scrutiny the arguments developed by the ECtHR. The Court's reasoning is framed within the riveting interdisciplinary debate on external border control. The Grand Chamber's final decision reduces the scope of the protection offered by Article 4 Protocol 4, for it introduces a highly indeterminate exception to the prohibition of summary returns at the border. The author suggests that this solution might favor non-entrée strategies and promote the current trend of externalizing the asylum procedures. Introducing broad exceptions to the prohibition of collective expulsion, especially if coupled with strong presumptions in favor of States, increases the effectiveness of border walls qua accountability waivers

The present Master’s thesis examines three recent interpretations of Rom 9-11, namely those of Michael Wolter, N.T. Wright and John M.G. Barclay. The analysis of each author follows the same procedure. Each main chapter begins with a consideration of how the respective author frames Paul’s overall theology. Next, what the respective author finds to be the occasion for Paul’s letter to the Romans in general is considered, which is followed by the author’s statement of the theme of Rom 9-11 in particular. In a further step, the author’s reconstruction of Paul’s argument in Rom 9-11 is presented and, finally, his view of the contemporary significance of Rom 9-11 is briefly presented. In the final chapter, the author of the present thesis takes up a tentative position, in critical engagement with Wolter, Wright and Barclay, with regard to the framing of Paul’s theology, the occasion of Romans, the theme of Rom 9-11 and Paul’s argumentation in those chapters. Finally, the thesis concludes with some fresh considerations of the usefulness of Rom 9-11 for Jewish Christian dialogue today

Hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of a seasonally forced tidal inlet system

    No full text
Tidal inlets along the central coast of Vietnam are highly dynamic and variable under the influence of seasonal climatic regime. The strong episodic processes of river flow and wave action cause the inlet morphologies to be changed frequently and unpredictable. Despite the interests and research on tidal inlets have been growing in recent decades, the mechanisms behind morphodynamics and behaviours of tidal inlets located in tropical monsoon areas with strong episodic river flow influences are still poorly understood. Effective engineering solutions for the inlets could not be found without understandings of the physical processes underlying the morphodynamics and behaviours of the inlets. This research work focuses on the hydrodynamics and morphodynamics of a tidal inlet system located on a microtidal wave dominated coast in the region. Further insights into the morphodynamics and behaviour of the inlet system has been gained in the present study based on the analyses observed data and numerical model simulation to address the role and the influence of each physical process on the morphology and the behaviour of the inlets. Although the study is focused on a specific tidal inlet system, the principles, approaches and some results of the study may be applied to, or at least, give a hint for other inlets in the regionHydraulic EngineeringCivil Engineering and Geoscience
