HIV/AIDS in the Slums of Kenya: Intervening Through Effectively Utilizing Volunteers
No full textHIV/AIDS affects millions of people globally and has significantly impacted public health for decades. In Kenya, the effects of HIV/AIDS are widespread, but slum areas have an adult HIV prevalence rate twice as high as the national rate. Slums are characterized by scarce resources, making HIV prevention efforts extremely challenging. Many believe that the voluntary sector is best suited for the role of spearheading efforts to address HIV/AIDS through prevention programs. International volunteerism is growing in popularity, but the various projects that volunteers work on are sustainable and impactful only if the volunteers are properly trained. To examine this process, the author travelled to Kenya to work with Fadhili Community, a local NGO involved in HIV/AIDS prevention programs within Kibera and other slums. The objectives of this research study were to assess current volunteer HIV/AIDS programs, determine gaps in knowledge and skills among volunteers, and develop an HIV/AIDS training manual for incoming volunteers. The author, utilizing participant observation, visited eight
volunteer HIV/AIDS programs in different regions of Kenya to assess them for organizational capacity to utilize volunteers. The author discovered widespread assumptions prevalent among HIV programs and international volunteers that prevented effective utilization of volunteers. To address the gaps in knowledge common among volunteers and to address the expectations of HIV programs, the author created and introduced a HIV/AIDS manual to Fadhili Community
volunteers. Educating and training international volunteers in a concise yet effective way will positively impact HIV/AIDS programs in Kibera

No full textAuthor Institution: Physics Department, Georgia Institute of Technology Atlanta; University of California, Los Alamos National Laboratory Theoretical Division Los AlamosThe techniques used to elucidate spherical top spectral clustering can be applied to other types of polyatomic molecules including those of low symmetry. Dynamical effective energy , can be drawn using the molecular constants in a general rotor Hamiltonian, and the surfaces can be used to calculate and understand the spectra and dynamics of the rotors. Spectral clustering effects such as rotational mixing of nuclear spin species are possible in asymmetric top molecules as well as in the spherical tops and The energy surfaces provide simple ways to calculate, predict, or rule out many such effects for a wide range of molecular species. President PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE
Looking back over this year, our school
has changed a lot with our new bandroom,
renovated shop, the new six-day rotation
system and our new teachers. I think this all
helped in making our school the best it has been
since I've been here. I really had a great time
being president and believe me, it's not easy!
I had fun planning and organizing events over the
year and I hope you all enjoyed it as much as I
did.
As we, the grade nine's go on to grade ten,
I don't think we'll ever forget this super school!
For those of you who are staying for another one
or two years good luck and keep our school the
best ever!

Another great year has gone by, but this year was exceptional. The
participation and school spirit really made Paterson shine.
Many people in our community realized that our school is a place that
welcomes them. We, as a student body and staff, worked to ensure we
emphasized the community theme.
Being vice president has meant a lot of hard work but the position
was very rewarding. I've had a lot of new, enjoyable experiences. I
would encourage others to support Student Council activities.
I would like to express my appreciation to all the people who helped
out in the many school events. To the teachers for their support and
the students for their awesome participation. These people make Paterson
great.
In future years I'm sure this 86/87 school year will be looked back
on as one to remember. Our achievements were many and will be even greater
as "We've only just begun".

Although you are completing your
years at Gilbert Paterson Community
School, you hold the key to all of
the future which stretches ahead of
you. What you achieve and the
level of satisfaction and
happiness which you obtain in the
years to come will be significantly
affected by the decisions that you
make today.
There are some keys to
personal success that have proven
themselves over the years. Look
to the future with optimism and cultivate a positive mental attitude.
Success is much more elusive for the individual with a sour
disposition. You will have successes and you will have failures to
be sure. Remember to view each as a learning experience.
Strive to be the best that you can be. On the track, races
are won and lost by mere split seconds - this is the difference between
glory and tears. It is the same in life. Striving to be a "little bit
better" can make the difference.
People tend to get what they expect from themselves and
others. Therefore, expect the best from yourself and from those
around you.
And most importantly - be a friend to yourself. You are
special - act that way.
Even though "you've only just begun" you can look forward
with great anticipation to a very bright future indeed. In the words

Congressional Conservatism and the New Deal
No full textHistory faced by the disaster of depression, Congress in the early 1930s proved amenable to the far-reaching demands and programs presented to it by the newly elected President, Franklin D. Roosevelt, but by 1937 it showed increasing resistance, even outright opposition, to many New Deal measures. In this study, James T. Patterson examines this resurgence of conservative strength in Congress, focusing upon the personalities and backgrounds of the men involved and upon the key domestic issues which brought them together in an informal coalition opposed to executive plans, especially for the years 1937–1939.
From the first the Roosevelt Congress had had its “irreconcilables”—men like Carter Glass, Millard Tydings, and Harry Byrd-who viewed the New Deal with dismay, and in the voting on the public utilities holding company bill and the surprise tax measure of 1935 they were joined by a significant number of other congressmen who had hitherto supported the administration. It was, however, Roosevelt\u27s plan to enlarge the Supreme Court that proved to be the turning point. This controversial measure provided a common issue on which conservatives, both Republican and Democratic, could unite—the “irreconcilables,” Republicans like Arthur Vandenberg, others like Charles McNary, and nominal Democratic progressives like Burton K. Wheeler. Following this crucial confrontation, the bipartisan conservative coalition was able to control enough votes to oppose the administration on such key measures as the fair labor standards and housing bills of 1937, the reorganization and tax bills of 1938, and the relief and tax bills of 1939. Incited by grievances over patronage, a feeling that the emergency was past, and fears of radicalism, congressmen increasingly asserted their independence of executive leadership.
In this 1966 Organization of American Historians award-winning book, Patterson has provided a new exploration of one of the most significant developments in recent American history-the creation by conservative congressmen of a pattern of cooperation that continues to exert a potent influence upon the course of legislation.
