Perrier 1894: 195–196; Perrier 1896a: 17, 1896a: 51; Psilaster andromeda (M̹ller & Troschel, 1842)—? Koehler 1909: 60, pl. 2, fig. 3, pl. 16, figs. 8–9; Koehler 1924: 205; Mortensen 1927a: 59–60, fig. 33; Marques 1980: 100; Gage et al. 1983: 274–275; Psilaster andromeda andromeda (M̹ller & Troschel, 1842)— García-Diez et al. 2005: 47. Type locality: Kattegat (probably off Bohuslan, western Sweden). See: A.M. Clark & Downey (1992: 77–78, figs. 14a, 15a–c, k, I, pl. 21, figs. D–G); Dilman (2006: 180). Occurrence: Northeast Atlantic cold waters, from the Arctic south to the SE of Greenland, the Reykjanes Ridge, Iceland-Faeroe Rise and from Scandinavia to the Bay of Biscay (A.M. Clark & Downey 1992, Dilman 2006) and the?Azores (Koehler 1909); the subspecies P. andromeda florae (Verrill, 1889) is known from south of Newfoundland to SE of Cape May, New Jersey (c. 38°30’N; A.M. Clark & Downey 1992). Depth: 70– 2,965 m (A.M. Clark & Downey 1992, Dilman 2006);? AZO: 140– 1,440 m (Perrier 1894, Koehler 1909). Habitat: soft sediments (mud or ooze; A.M. Clark & Downey 1992); predates on molluscs, echinoderms (young spatangoids), foraminifera, etc. (Mortensen 1927a). Remarks: A.M. Clark & Downey (1992) reviewed the bathymetrical and geographical distributions of Psilaster andromeda and concluded that it could not be established with certainty. One of the main contributing factors is that this highly variable species has been frequently confused with other similar species, such as Persephonaster patagiatus and P. sphenoplax, both overlapping the geographic distribution of Psilaster andromeda andromeda. They further suggest that records south of the Bay of Biscay are zoogeographically unlikely, thus implying that the only known Azorean records by Perrier (1894, 1896a) are misidentifications. Historically, Koehler (1909) had already questioned the validity of the determinations made by Perrier on the material from the Talisman and Hirondelle stating that the later author confused P. andromeda with P. patagiatus. On re-examination of the material taken by Hirondelle Koehler confirmed his suspicions and remarked that all specimens belonged to the latter species. As for the material collected by Talisman, Koehler commented that both species were present. However, A.M. Clark & Downey (1992) suspected that Koehler himself confused P. andromeda with P. sphenoplax. Additionally, on finding a great variability of the diagnostic characters for P. andromeda subspecies Dilman (2006) showed some concerns on their subspecific value.Published as part of Madeira, Patrícia, Kroh, Andreas, Cordeiro, Ricardo, De, António M., Martins, Frias & Ávila, Sérgio P., 2019, The Echinoderm Fauna of the Azores (NE Atlantic Ocean), pp. 1-231 in Zootaxa 4639 (1) on page 79, DOI: 10.11646/zootaxa.4639.1, http://zenodo.org/record/334216

    No full text
Chapter 2 of Library Technology Reports (vol. 55, no. 1), "HAMLET: Neural-Net-Powered Prototypes for Library Discovery"In this chapter, contributing author Andromeda Yelton discusses HAMLET (How about Machine Learning Enhancing Theses?), a machine learning system that Yelton created. It contains three different prototypes: a recommendation engine, an oracle file uploader, and a literature review buddy. Throughout this piece, she informs readers of neural-net-powered machine learning—what it is and how she used it to create HAMLET—and also discusses the benefits and potential problems associated with such systems. She ends the chapter looking toward the future of this technology and what it means for libraries

Integrated control mechanism of electrical discharge machining system for higher material removal rate

    No full text
A servo control system in Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM) system is a control system with an appropriate control algorithm to position electrode on a particular distance from workpiece during machining process. The gap between the electrode and the workpiece is in the range of 10 – 50 μm. This ideal gap is achieved by applying an appropriate control algorithm to the servo control system of the EDM, and maintaining this gap will improve the Material Removal Rate (MRR) during the machining process. A considerable number of unique methods were proposed in the control algorithm in order to bring the electrode to the optimum position. This research proposes a new method called Integrated Control Mechanism (ICM) to improve the MRR of the EDM system. A rotary encoder is used as an additional mechanical sensor for the feedback control system in order to limit the electrode movement. Modelling of EDM is further investigated to predict the MRR parameter and optimization of electrode control position. A Neural Network system is used to predict MRR where Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Differential Evolution (DE) are studied and simulated to optimize the Proportional Integral Derivative (PID) control parameters for the EDM system. Research conducted shows that the proposed Feed Forward Artificial Neural Network improves the accuracy of prediction in determining MRR by 2.92% and PID parameter optimization is successfully applied either using PSO or DE. The ICM is successfully implemented and the result shows that MRR is higher when compared to the normal machining process

Mowa, pismo i ciało w powieści Gabriela Josipovici Hotel Andromeda

The aim of this article is to study Gabriel Josipovici’s dialogue style in his latest fiction, Hotel Andromeda (2014), in order to prove that the dialogue form is used to problematize significant theoretical issues in his writing, namely the problem of speech, writing and the body. The fact that speech and writing are embedded in the text in exactly the same way is an interesting feature of Josipovici’s novel which, against the long philosophical tradition originating in Plato’s dialogues, implies the equality of both means of expression. It seems that the common denominator the author finds for both media is the body which he smuggles into literature through the extensive use of dialogue and the characters’ fascination with the materiality of the written word

Rehabilitation at Andromeda: a community transitional center for male offenders, 1983

For more than one hundred and fifty years, the primary societal response to criminal behavior has been incarceration. Now, there are those who believe that while institutionalization may be necessary for a certain percentage of the criminal population, there is indeed a substantial number of individuals who are being incarcerated unnecessarily. The most significant and major thrust of corrections today is its move toward community-based corrections. This move is a clear indicator that society will no longer continue to tolerate the ever-increasing costs of imprisonment to support a system that utilizes mass custody without effective treatment as its primary focus. This descriptive and exploratory study is about Andromeda, community-based program that offers offenders the opportunity to re-evaluate themselves and their situation. It is hoped that by using such an approach the offender will leave the correctional system with a more positive feeling of self-esteem and worth than when he first entered

The effectiveness of the Andromeda Transitional Center for inmates with a history of drug addiction, 1981

The purpose of this thesis is to point out how the variable of conformity relates to the effectiveness of the Andromeda Transitional Center. This objective was achieved by obtaining two independent samples of ranked data, one from the counselors' personal assessments of residents and the other from residents' assessments of themselves. It was hypothesized that these two independent samples of ranked data, coming from the same location, will provide the best prediction of the level of conformity by residents and of program effectiveness. The rank-sum test was used to discern the difference between the two populations in question. The results of these differences were seen to be significant beyond the 2.58 level of significance for a two-tailed test. Thus, the hypothesis was rejected and an attempt to explain this significant discrepancy was undertaker. Relevant theories on group conformity and cohesion were used to assist in the explanation of this wide discrepancy. It became apparent, upon applying these relevant theories, that a possible explanation for the significant difference between Group I (residents) and Group II (counselors) was that each grouped possessed a different conception of the meaning of the word conformity. This notion was expounded upon for the purpose of showing its relevance to the study. A recommendation is offered that will' hopefully bridge the gap between resident views of the program and the official view held by staff members, thus creating a therapeutic environment that will encourage sincere and honest participation in the program by residents
