Brain aging and speech perception in noise: effects of background noise and talker variability
This two-experiment project was conducted at the Speech neuroscience laboratory in Quebec City (www.speechneurolab.ca). It aimed to investigate the impact of background noise and talker variability on speech perception performance (sensitivity, reaction time) in healthy young and older adults using a multi-talker auditory syllable discrimination task, and to clarify underlying neurobiological mechanisms using multimodal MRI. As part of the project, we developed and standardized a multi-talker auditory syllable discrimination task. Syllables were presented in quiet or in background noise (pink noise). In Experiment 1, we examined the relationship between speech perception, hearing and auditory attention in 83 participants aged 19 to 87 years. In Experiment 2, we examined the relationship between speech perception in noise and brain structure and function using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in a subset of 32 participants from Experiment 1.
The project was approved by the Comité d’éthique de la recherche sectoriel en neurosciences et santé mentale, Institut Universitaire en Santé Mentale de Québec (#360-2014).
Here we share all stimulus files, stimulus information and experiment files for both experiments. We also share uncorrected and corrected group MRI data (average brain, functional and structural MRI group maps). Individual data (behavioural and MRI), cannot be shared because participants did not consent to individual data sharing. To be meaningful, the behavioural data would need to contain information such as age, sex, etc. and such information could lead to the identification of the participants.

Subcortical Gray Matter Aging and Attentional Control in Amateur Musicians and Non-Musicians: the dataset
The objective of this study was to investigate age-related changes in subcortical grey matter structures involved in attentional control, and to examine the relationship between subcortical decline and performance on a test of attention and inhibition in adults engaged in musical and non-musical activities. Data were collected from 109 healthy adults, divided into three groups: 34 amateur singers (mean age = 61.62 ± 16.19 years; range 23–88; 65% female), 38 amateur instrumentalists (mean age = 52.47 ± 18.82 years; range 20–88; 32% female), and 37 controls (mean age = 55.57 ± 18.97 years; range 20–87; 49% female). The dataset contains aggregated measures used for group-level statistical analyses, allowing replication of the published findings and enabling new analyses on subcortical volumetric data in this sample

The primary objective of this study was to investigate structural brain aging within the attentional system of singers and instrumentalists. Specifically, we examined cortical aging across three groups: amateur singers, amateur instrumentalists, and non-musician active controls. Data were collected from 109 healthy adults, divided as follows: 34 amateur singers (mean age = 61.62 ± 16.19 years; age range = 23–88; 65% female), 38 amateur instrumentalists (mean age = 52.47 ± 18.82 years; age range = 20–88; 32% female), and 37 controls (mean age = 55.57 ± 18.97 years; age range = 20–87; 49% female). We are sharing the aggregated dataset used for group-level statistical analyses, enabling others to replicate our findings or explore new analyses on cortical thickness data

Aging of Amateur Singers and Non-singers: From Behavior to Resting-state Connectivity
This datasets includes resting-state functional connectivity (RSFC) group data from 41 healthy singers and 43 non-singers, measured in five networks: auditory, speech, language, default mode and dorsal attention, as well as its relationship to auditory cognitive aging.

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
