Variations on the Author
No full text“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

No full textWe make progress on a number of open problems concerning the area requirement for drawing trees on a grid. We prove that
1) every tree of size n (with arbitrarily large degree) has a straight-line drawing with area n2^{O(sqrt{log log n log log log n})}, improving the longstanding O(n log n) bound;
2) every tree of size n (with arbitrarily large degree) has a straight-line upward drawing with area n sqrt{log n}(log log n)^{O(1)}, improving the longstanding O(n log n) bound;
3) every binary tree of size n has a straight-line orthogonal drawing with area n2^{O(log^*n)}, improving the previous O(n log log n) bound by Shin, Kim, and Chwa (1996) and Chan, Goodrich, Kosaraju, and Tamassia (1996);
4) every binary tree of size n has a straight-line order-preserving drawing with area n2^{O(log^*n)}, improving the previous O(n log log n) bound by Garg and Rusu (2003);
5) every binary tree of size n has a straight-line orthogonal order-preserving drawing with area n2^{O(sqrt{log n})}, improving the O(n^{3/2}) previous bound by Frati (2007)

Inducing Compact but Accurate Tree-Substitution Grammars
No full textTree substitution grammars (TSGs) are a compelling alternative to context-free grammars for modelling syntax. However, many popular techniques for estimating weighted TSGs (under the moniker of Data Oriented Parsing) suffer from the problems of inconsistency and over-fitting. We present a theoretically principled model which solves these problems using a Bayesian non-parametric formulation. Our model learns compact and simple grammars, uncovering latent linguistic structures (e.g., verb subcategorisation), and in doing so far out-performs a standard PCFG
Homosexual Copulations by Male Tree Swallows
No full textHomosexual courtship behavior in non-human animals is well known (Ford and Beach 1980) and occurs in a wide variety of taxa. However, homosexual copulations, especially between males, are less well known. In birds, males mounting other males have been observed in the colonially breeding Cattle Egret (Bubulcus ibis) (Fujioka and Yamagishi 1981) and Common Murre (Uria aalge) (Birkhead et al. 1985, Hatchwell 1988). Neither Fujioka and Yamagishi (1981) nor Birkhead et al. (1985) and Hatchwell (1988) reported whether cloacal contact occurred during their observations of male-male mountings. Evaluating the Impact of Government Land Use Policies on Tree Canopy Coverage
No full textMany communities are experiencing the negative effects associated with not sustaining a sufficient level of tree canopy coverage. Tree canopy plays a crucial role in the environment, providing benefits such as clean water and air, erosion prevention, climate control, and sustained ecological resources and native species habitat. Additionally, tree canopy plays an economic role by increasing housing values, alleviating expenditures related to erosion destruction, decreasing spending on sewer standards, increasing energy efficiency, and reducing medical costs related to health issues, such as asthma, that are associated with environmental degradation. To study how local government policies may be related to changes in tree canopy, an empirical study was performed using Greater Metropolitan Atlanta as the study area. The statistical analysis identifies local government policies that are effective, such as specific tree ordinance clauses and zoning regulations. No full textAssistant Professor Timothy Meyer served as a contributing author for the United Nations Industrial Development Organization\u27s report titled Networks for Prosperity: Connecting Development Knowledge Beyond 2015. The document, which was released during November, analyzes the nexus between the global connectedness of a country and its economic success, sustainability and government effectiveness. Meyer was one of only approximately 20 academic and practical experts from around the world selected to serve as a contributor after a global call for proposals.
