    Digital heritage dissemination and the participatory storytelling project #iziTRAVELSicilia: the case of the Archaeological Museum of Syracuse (Italy)

    The aim of this paper is to demonstrate how the participatory and crowdsourcing project #iziTRAVELSicilia could be a key to the dissemination of 3D models on cultural heritage. This project has been recognized as a best practice both in territorial digital marketing and in digital promotion and valorisation through storytelling and crowdsourcing culture. #iziTRAVELSicilia has already involved thousands of people, producing more than 180 museum and tour audio guides. It has become a real model of participation in the co-creation of cultural values. In this paper we briefly present the project and the case of the Archaeological Museum ‘Paolo Orsi’ in Syracuse (Italy), as best practice on digital dissemination through platforms such as Google Street View and izi.TRAVEL itself, revealing how this platform has been already largely used for the dissemination both of existing 3D models and for new 3D models, such as those made by USF IDEx for the ‘Paolo Orsi’ Museum. Specifically, a collection of 26 ancient sculptures and artefacts has been virtualized via laser scanning and digital photogrammetry in a participatory experience of measurement science. The global dissemination of those 3D models through izi.TRAVEL’s platform and other alternatives platforms will represent a significant contribute to the digital accessibility of the Museum of Syracuse but also the starting point of a metrological 3D database of ancient Sicilian sculpture generated entirely crowdsourcin

    Etching and drilling of through-holes in thin glass by means of picosecond Bessel beams

    In this paper, we present a laser etching and drilling technique for thin glass materials based on the use of finite-energy pulsed Bessel beams orthogonally impinging on the sample surface. Thanks to the elongated focal zone of the quasinon-diffractive beam, the laser processing can be performed without scanning the beam position along the thickness of the transparent material sample, but simply moving the sample in the plane orthogonal to the beam. We first present the results of single-shot glass microfabrication performed to identify the optimal laser parameters needed for an efficient internal material ablation. We then describe the micromachining technique used for etching the dielectric material at glass-air interfaces and for generating, without chemical etching, through-holes in thin glasses

    Simulation of new policies for the baggage check in the security gates of the airports: the Logiscan case study

    In recent years, the trend to mix in the same airports legacy and low-cost companies is heavily affecting the airport operations, stressing the security checks in particular. In fact, low-cost companies force the airports to add additional and strict rules for the hand baggage allowance, with additional checks in the security gates, introducing delays for all the passengers, including the legacy ones. Moreover, recent changes to the rules for hand luggage allowance introduced by legacy airlines are forcing the airport operations management to think of new strategies to automate the entire security check process. One of the most advanced systems presently available to speed up the security operations is Logiscan, developed by Datalogic e Logital in collaboration with the "Aeroporto Guglielmo Marconi di Bologna S.p.A.", the company managing the Bologna Airport. The system automates the operations of size and weight measures and allowance checks and, in conjunction with a redesign of the queuing system, aims to improve the overall system efficiency in terms of accuracy and efficiency. In order to check the new overall system, the entire process has been modeled and analyzed by means of AirSIM, a simulation tool for airport operations based on the well-known OMNeT++ Discrete Event Simulator. AirSIM is an object-oriented simulator able to describe the behavior of different passenger types, as well as to incorporate the logic of different flow management policies. In this paper we will show both how AirSIM can be used to analyze and choose the different parameters of the new security system of an airport, and how the overall system performances can be enhance

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
