A case-control study of lameness in dairy cows
A case-control study was conducted to compare the physical hoof properties of digits responsible for clinical lameness with those of other digits on the same cows and with those of equivalent digits on non-lame control cows. The control cows were herd-mates matched by age, breed and stage of lactation. Hoof moisture, hoof hardness and sole concavity were measured on-farm. The resilience, compressive strength and elastic modulus of both sole and wall hoof were measured on biopsy samples collected from both case and control digits. White line disease, sole bruising and septic pododermatitis accounted for 92% of the clinical lameness lesions in the case digits examined. Less severe forms of white line disease and hoof haemorrhage were also observed frequently in the non-lame digits of both the case and control cows. Independent variables were screened for unconditional associations with case-control status using Student's paired t-test and Wilcoxon's matched pairs test. Conditional logistic regression analysis was finally used to identify which risk factors were associated with lameness. When equivalent digits on the matched cows were used as controls, sole and heel moisture, sole hardness, sole concavity and wall colour were selected for inclusion in the model derived to explain differences between the physical properties of lame and control digits. Values for each of these properties were lower in the lame digits than in the controls. The control digits had a higher percentage of black coloration than the lame digits. Sole hardness and sole concavity (both lower in the lame digits) were also selected for inclusion in the conditional logistic regression model derived when the adjoining digits on the same legs of the lame cows were used as controls. None of the physical hoof properties measured were associated with lameness when attempts were made to fit a model using the equivalent digits on the opposite legs of the lame cows as controls. Production of the lame cows was also compared with that of matched herd-mates. R. Periasamy, 5 January 2014.</p> <p> <b>Diagnosis.</b> Carapace pyriform, longer than wide. Rostrum almost as long as post-rostral CL; rostral spines slender, horizontal, separate from near base, lacking accessory spine (Fig. 2A). Dorsal carapace smooth; protogastric, mesogastric, cardiac and anterior branchial regions lacking tubercles; short epibranchial spine present (Fig. 2A). Orbits reduced, with narrow supraorbital eave (produced into weak, horizontal preorbital spine), a cupped postorbital process; upper orbital hiatus keyhole-shaped (Fig. 2B). Basal antennal article narrow anteriorly or sub-rectangular, almost as broad as long, anterolateral spine separated from flagellar base by notch (indicated by arrowhead in Fig. 2C), proximal portion of lateral margin produced into convex lobe. Maxilliped 3 merus triangular, as long as wide, length 0.5 × ischial length (Fig. 2D). Pterygostomian margin with 2 tubercles. Cheliped slender, dactylus short, curved; propodus sub-cylindrical, merus with 5 or 6 spines on posterior margin (Fig. 2A). Pereopods 2–5 dactyli bearing row of ventral spines (Fig. 2A).</p> <p> <b>Colouration.</b> Fresh specimen: mottled red, chelae greyish (Fig. 2A). Preserved specimen: light red (Fig. 2B).</p> <p> <b>Biology.</b> Known to inhabit sandy substrates; 28–52 m <b>(</b> Griffin & Tranter 1974, 1986). The present specimen was collected from sandy substrate, at 27 m depth, covered with macroalgae.</p> <p> <b>Remarks.</b> Griffin & Tranter (1986) described <i>H. cracentis</i> from a male from Gaspar Strait, Indonesia. This species closely resembles <i>H. bispinosus</i> Buitentijk, 1939, <i>H. inermis</i> (Rathbun, 1911) and <i>H. minutus</i> Buitentijk, 1939 in the absence of ornamentation on the mesogastric and anterior brachial regions of the carapace, a relatively broad upper orbital hiatus, and the presence of a sharp spine on the anterolateral angle of the basal antennal article. However, <i>H. cracentis</i> differs from <i>H. bispinosus</i> in having the preorbital and antorbital angles equally produced laterally (vs. distinct preorbital angle of eave in the latter species), and from <i>H. inermis</i> and <i>H. minutus</i> in relatively longer rostral spines> two-thirds post-rostral carapace length (vs. only half or less in the latter two species). The Indian specimen largely conforms to the description of the holotype (Griffin & Tranter 1986) in the elongated rostrum (> two-thirds of carapace length) keyhole-shaped upper orbital hiatus, absence of mesogastric tubercle on the carapace; and the anterolateral angle of basal antennal article produced forwards and slightly outwards as a short spine. Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. "Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Multiparameter optimisation of a magneto-optical trap using deep learning
The code provided in this repository was used to perform the optimisation of a magneto-optical trap as demonstrated in the work by Tranter et al. (arxiv:1805.00654). The code provided is an extension to the automatic optimisation python package M-LOOP written and maintained by Michael R Hush. The extension implements a basic neural network in an optimsation context such that online optimisation of a system may be performed as demonstrated in Tranter et al. </p

Ice sheets as a significant source of highly reactive nanoparticulate iron to the oceans
The Greenland and Antarctic Ice Sheets cover ~\n10% of global land surface, but are rarely considered as active components of the global iron cycle. The ocean waters around both ice sheets harbour highly productive coastal ecosystems, many of which are iron limited. Measurements of iron concentrations in subglacial runoff from a large Greenland Ice Sheet catchment reveal the potential for globally significant export of labile iron fractions to the near-coastal euphotic zone. We estimate that the flux of bioavailable iron associated with glacial runoff is 0.40–2.54?Tg per year in Greenland and 0.06–0.17?Tg per year in Antarctica. Iron fluxes are dominated by a highly reactive and potentially bioavailable nanoparticulate suspended sediment fraction, similar to that identified in Antarctic icebergs. Estimates of labile iron fluxes in meltwater are comparable with aeolian dust fluxes to the oceans surrounding Greenland and Antarctica, and are similarly expected to increase in a warming climate with enhanced melting
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
