Modelling and Control of Snake Robots

Snake robots have the potential of contributing vastly in areas such as rescue missions, fire-fighting and maintenance where it may either be too narrow or too dangerous for personnel to operate. This thesis reports novel results within modelling and control of snake robots as steps toward developing snake robots capable of such operations. A survey of the various mathematical models and motion patterns for snake robots found in the published literature is presented. Both purely kinematic models and models including dynamics are investigated. More-over, different approaches to both biologically inspired locomotion and artificially generated motion patterns for snake robots are discussed. Snakes utilize irregularities in the terrain, such as rocks and vegetation, for faster and more efficient locomotion. This motivates the development of snake robots that actively use the terrain for locomotion, i.e. obstacle aided locomotion. In order to accurately model and understand this phenomenon, this thesis presents a novel non-smooth (hybrid) mathematical model for 2D snake robots, which allows the snake robot to push against external obstacles apart from a .at ground. Subsequently, the 2D model is extended to a non-smooth 3D model. The 2D model offers an efficient platform for testing and development of planar snake robot motion patterns with obstacles, while the 3D model can be used to develop motion patterns where it is necessary to lift parts of the snake robot during locomotion. The framework of non-smooth dynamics and convex analysis is employed to be able to systematically and accurately incorporate both unilateral contact forces (from the obstacles and the ground) and spatial friction forces based on Coulomb’s law using set-valued force laws. Snake robots can easily be constructed for forward motion on a flat surface by adding passive caster wheels on the underside of the snake robot body. However, the advantage of adding wheels suffers in rougher terrains. Therefore, the models in this thesis are developed for wheel-less snake robots to aid future development of motion patterns that do not rely on passive wheels. For numerical integration of the developed models, conventional numerical solvers can not be employed directly due to the set-valued force laws and possible instantaneous velocity changes. Therefore, we show how to implement the models for simulation with a numerical integrator called the time-stepping method. This method helps to avoid explicit changes between equations during simulation even though the system is hybrid. Both the 2D and the 3D mathematical models are verified through experiments. In particular, a back-to-back comparison between numerical simulations and experimental results is presented. The results compare very well for obstacle aided locomotion. The problem of model-based control of the joints of a planar snake robot without wheels is also investigated. Delicate operations such as inspection and maintenance in industrial environments or performing search and rescue operations require precise control of snake robot joints. To this end, we present a controller that asymptotically stabilizes the joints of a snake robot to a desired reference trajectory. The 2D and 3D model referred to above are ideal for simulation of various snake robot motion pattern. How-ever, it is also advantageous to model the snake robot based the standard equations of motion for the dynamics of robot manipulators. This latter modelling approach is not as suited for simulation of a snake robot due to its substantial number of degrees of freedom, but a large number of control techniques are developed within this framework and these can now be employed for a snake robot. We first develop a process plant model from the standard dynamics of a robot manipulator. Then we derive a control plant model from the process plant model and develop a controller based on input-output linearization of the control plant model. The control plant model renders the controller independent of the global orientation of the snake robot as this is advantageous for the stability analysis. Asymptotic stability of the desired trajectory of the closed-loop system is shown using a formal Lyapunov-based proof. Performance of the controller is, first, tested through simulations with a smooth dynamical model and, second, with a non-smooth snake robot model with set-valued Coulomb friction. The three main models developed in this thesis all serve important purposes. First, the 2D model is for investigating planar motion patterns by effective simulations. Second, the 3D model is for developing motion patterns that require two degrees of freedom rotational joints on the snake robot. Finally, the control plant model is employed to investigate stability and to construct a model-based controller for a planar snake robot so that its joints are accurately controlled to a desired trajectory

Denne masteroppgaven studerer avanserte bildesegmenteringsalgoritmer for automatisk korrosjonsskade-segmentering. This master thesis reviews state-of-the-art image segmentation algorithms for the purposes of automatic corrosion damage segmentation and classification. Automatic image analysis is needed in order to process all data retrieved from drone-driven industrial inspections. Image classification can alert an inspector that a damage is present, whereas image segmentation can further specify its shape and location. This could be the first step towards estimation of total damaged surface area of a construction, an often-used metric to initiate maintenance. To this end, 608 images with corrosion damages are instance-wise annotated with binary segmentation masks. Additionally, a general, two-stage data augmentation scheme empirically shown to significantly reduce overfitting is developed. With this scheme, the neural networks PSPNet and Mask R-CNN obtains, respectively, 86.6% and 84.1% frequency weighted IoU on a 50-image test set. It is concluded that image segmentation can aid automating industrial inspections of steel constructions in the future, and that instance segmentation algorithms are likely more useful than semantic segmentation algorithms, due to its applications to a wider range of use-cases. However, current performance with the rather small dataset used is not good enough to construct a reliable autonomous system yet. For further work, the dataset should be extended with more classes, e.g. crack in concrete, paint flaking, intact steel construction and corrosion on rebar. This could also include classes for different degrees of severity of damages. Furthermore, ways to estimate total percentage of damaged construction coating, and applying time series prediction methods to forecast damage development, can be researched

This thesis explores and compares the capabilities of different motion planning algorithms on simulated robotic manipulators designed for industrial inspection and maintenance (I&M) tasks. The work is developed in the context of the JARVIS project and focuses on a custom robotic platform consisting of a UR5e robotic arm, Robotiq gripper, and Panther mobile base. This work aims to enable collision- aware robotic manipulation and evaluate the performance of motion planning in both unconstrained and constrained environments, using the MoveIt Task Constructor (MTC) within the ROS 2 framework. For this purpose, a simulation setup was developed in ROS 2 and MoveIt, integrating the full robotic platform model and enabling planning for object interaction tasks. The implemented task consists of a pick-and-retreat motion that was selected for its relevance to a wide range of I&M scenarios. To guide object placement and assess workspace capabilities, the manipulability index was computed over a grid of grasp poses. Two scenarios, one unconstrained and one with obstacles simulating a narrow path, were used to evaluate six sampling- based planners from the Open Motion Planning Library (OMPL). In addition to overall performance, individual task stages were analysed to understand their contributions to planning time and path cost. Direct comparisons between planners were limited by MTC’s internal behavior, which executes multiple planning attempts per trial and selects the most promising result, reducing the ability to isolate individual planner performance. However, the pipeline enabled consistent scenario evaluation and helped identify common failure points, such as collisions and timeouts. It also provided useful insights into how task performance changed under environmental constraints, with success rates and range of valid solutions decreasing in cluttered settings. Overall, the pipeline demonstrates a foundation for robotic manipulation in simulation, and serves as a starting point for future work involving mobile base planning, perception integration, and more advanced I&M tasks

In augmented reality, computer-generated objects are used to enhance the perception of real-world experiences, through added clarity and data. In the last years, the technology have been gaining popularity, especially in development of mobile apps, but also in industry applications. Industries such as oil and gas, military and manufacturing have seen the advantages that AR may offer through added support and instructions during operations. An industry that has yet to explore the benefits of AR is aquaculture. AR have the potential to reduce cost, save time and enhance support in underwater drone operations such as net and mooring inspections. With AR the control personnel may achieve a better overview and more efficient completion of the operations through added AR information. To increase the production of fish, aquaculture sites have to be located further from land at more exposed places. This increases the need of reliable technology that could make benefits related to remote operations and surveillance with manual or autonomous drones, and AR is a promising technology in that regard. This thesis aims to explore how AR could enhance the underwater ROV operation of fish cage net inspection and repair. Two AR systems have been implemented to explore, test and evaluate different kinds of ways to use AR in net inspections and repair: The AR INFO system and AR INTERACTION system. The AR INFO system is implemented to look at how AR could achieve enhanced handling and displaying of information under inspections of the net. The AR INTERACTION have been implemented to see how AR could be used to enhance support in interaction operations such as net repair. The AR systems are evaluated separately, conducting two different experiments: The INFO and INTERACTION experiments. In the experiments test persons solve a set of different tasks using both an AR system and a system without AR. The tasks are almost the same for both systems, but some adaptions have been made to make the test procedure of the two systems comparable. The system without AR works as a benchmark, to evaluate if the AR system achieve better performance and usability. In chapter two of the thesis, relevant theory related to drone operations in aquaculture, AR and usability testing are presented. In the following chapters both AR systems and experiments, with test procedures, are described in detail. One of the main contributions of this thesis, is the concept sketch and proposal of an improved AR system based on the findings and evaluations of the AR systems implemented in the thesis. The AR systems in the thesis have been evaluated through different kinds of evaluations. The NASA-TLX app have been used to accurately evaluate the workload of the systems. Screen recordings of video feed from computer used in the experiments and objective observations have been gathered during the experiment. After the experiments, the test persons have conducted a subjective evaluation, evaluating the AR systems based on usability goals described in detail in section 2.5.1. The main result was that the AR system must have a simplistic user interface to avoid information overload, and that only AR components that contribute directly to the operation should be part of the AR system. Supporting information is best suited as static UI text on a panel of the screen, and not as augmented components in the scene. The proposed, improved AR system may contribute to new ideas and inspirations on how to implement an AR system related to remote underwater interaction drone(UID) operations in aquaculture. Throughout this project, AR have shown to be a promising technology for operations in aquaculture. The AR INTERACTION system performed better than the system without AR in the categories related to completions time of tasks, workload and usability. Nevertheless, the AR INFO system got a more mixed response. In parts of the experiments, the test persons suffered from information overload decreasing the performance of the AR system. All the results are presented and discussed in the Results chapter. The goals of implementing, testing and evaluation AR systems aimed towards net inspection and repair are assumed achieved. The results obtained from the experiments, show that the AR systems have a way to go related to usability and performance, but that the implementations offer a basis for further enhancements of the AR systems. Discussion on bias and validity of results conducted in the experiments, as well as how AR could be used in the best way to enhance operations in aquaculture, are presented in the end of the thesis. Suggestions for further testing of AR related to ROV operations in aquaculture are also presented

A nonsmooth (hybrid) 3-D mathematical model of a snake robot (without wheels) is developed and experimentally validated in this paper. The model is based on the framework of nonsmooth dynamics and convex analysis that allows us to easily and systematically incorporate unilateral contact forces (i.e., between the snake robot and the ground surface) and friction forces based on Coulomb's law of dry friction. Conventional numerical solvers cannot be employed directly due to set-valued force laws and possible instantaneous velocity changes. Therefore, we show how to implement the model for numerical treatment with a numerical integrator called the time-stepping method. This method helps to avoid explicit changes between equations during simulation even though the system is hybrid. Simulation results for the serpentine motion pattern lateral undulation and sidewinding are presented. In addition, experiments are performed with the snake robot Aiko for locomotion by lateral undulation and sidewinding, both with isotropic friction. For these cases, back-to-back comparisons between numerical results and experimental results are given.3-D Snake Robot Motion: Nonsmooth Modeling, Simulations, and Experiement

Snake Robot Obstacle-Aided Locomotion: Modeling, Simulations, and Experiements

Snakes utilize irregularities in the terrain, such as rocks and vegetation, for faster and more efficient locomotion. This motivates the development of snake robots that actively use the terrain for locomotion, i.e., obstacle-aided locomotion. In order to accurately model and understand this phenomenon, this paper presents a novel nonsmooth (hybrid) mathematical model for wheel-less snake robots, which allows the snake robot to push against external obstacles apart from a flat ground. The framework of nonsmooth dynamics and convex analysis allows us to systematically and accurately incorporate both unilateral contact forces (from the obstacles) and isotropic friction forces based on Coulomb's law using set-valued force laws. The mathematical model is verified through experiments. In particular, a back-to-back comparison between numerical simulations and experimental results is presented. It is, furthermore, shown that the snake robot is able to move forward faster and more robustly by exploiting obstacles.Snake Robot Obstacle-Aided Locomotion: Modeling, Simulations, and Experiement

State of the art on industrial robot systems for extreme environments. KMB-project: Next Generation Robotics for Norwegian Industry

-Robots are increasingly being introduced into new application areas and they can substitute high-cost manual labor in 4D (dirty, dull, distant or dangerous) environments. This can contribute to a reduction of production costs and improved environment, health and safety (EHS) issues, as well as growth in a global market. More and more industries see the benefit of replacing manual labor in extreme environments with robots. However, extreme environments can be tough on any equipment including robot manipulators. Many manufactures produce robots specialized for extreme environments and this report aims at giving an overview of these robotic systems for such environments. These environments include Ex-zones, high and low temperatures, and environments which require a high IP rating on equipment. Moreover, a short overview of some robot tools for use in such environments is also given.   This report is written in the KMB-project Next Generation Robotics for Norwegian Industry.  The main objective of the KMB-project is to: “Develop enabling robotics technology that meets Norwegian industry’s need for robotic solutions for competitiveness and increased safety and efficiency for targeted applications.” One key aspect regarding this objective is robotic technologies for extreme environments.
