PREDICTING SUITABLE DISTRIBUTION FOR AN ENDEMIC, RARE AND THREATENED SPECIES (GREY-SHANKED DOUC LANGUR, PYGATHRIX CINEREA NADLER, 1997) USING MAXENT MODEL
A framework for the definition of complex structured feature spaces
In this paper, we propose a general framework that, starting from the feature space of an existing base graph kernel, allows to define more expressive kernels which can learn more complex concepts, meanwhile generalizing different proposals in literature. Experimental results on eight real-world graph datasets from different domains show that the proposed framework instances are able to get a statistically significant performance improvement over both the considered base kernels and framework instances previously defined in literature, obtaining state-of-the-art results on all the considered datasets
Heterogeneous networks integration for disease-gene prioritization with node kernels
Motivation: The identification of disease-gene associations is a task of fundamental importance in human health research. A typical approach consists in first encoding large gene/protein relational datasets as networks due to the natural and intuitive property of graphs for representing objects' relationships and then utilizing graph-based techniques to prioritize genes for successive low-throughput validation assays. Since different types of interactions between genes yield distinct gene networks, there is the need to integrate different heterogeneous sources to improve the reliability of prioritization systems. Results: We propose an approach based on three phases: first, we merge all sources in a single network, then we partition the integrated network according to edge density introducing a notion of edge type to distinguish the parts and finally, we employ a novel node kernel suitable for graphs with typed edges. We show how the node kernel can generate a large number of discriminative features that can be efficiently processed by linear regularized machine learning classifiers. We report state-of-the-art results on 12 disease-gene associations and on a time-stamped benchmark containing 42 newly discovered associations
Effects of Transcranial Direct Current Stimulation (tDCS) Combined With Wrist Robot-Assisted Rehabilitation on Motor Recovery in Subacute Stroke Patients: A Randomized Controlled Trial
Both transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) and wrist robot-assisted training have demonstrated to be promising approaches for stroke rehabilitation. However, the effects of the combination of the two treatments in subacute stroke patients are not clear yet. To investigate the effectiveness of combining tDCS and wrist robot-assisted rehabilitation in subacute stroke patients in comparison with the wrist robotic training only, a single-blind, randomized, sham-controlled trial was performed with 40 subacute stroke patients (25 +/- 7 days from stroke onset time). Patients were randomly assigned to experimental group (EG, n = 20) where patients receive real tDCS [2 mA, 20 min, and the anodal electrodeon the primarymotor cortex-M1-area of the affected hemisphere (C3/C4 in the 10-20 EEG system and the cathodal electrode on the contralateral orbit bone)] or control group (CG, n = 20) where patients receive sham tDCS (5 s) during wrist robotic rehabilitation training. The effects of the treatment were evaluated by means of the upper extremity, shoulder-elbow, and wrist subsections of the Fugl-Meyer assessment scale, Modified Ashworth Scale, Motricity Index and Box and Block Test together with kinematic parameters. One out of 20 patients in the CG did not complete the treatment. All the clinical outcome measures except the Modified Ashworth Scale showed a significant increase after the treatment in both groups. However, no significant difference in the average changes after treatment between groups was observed. The movement velocity and smoothness showed significant increases after the training, even though no significant difference between groups was observed. The combination of wrist robot-assisted training and tDCS did not show additional effects in comparison with wrist robot-assisted training only in subacute stroke patients. The negative results found in this paper are specific for the specific intervention. The timing of delivering the tDCS and the robot-assisted therapy has to be deeply investigated to enhance the effectiveness of the training
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
