Cato und die Bienen
The paper focuses on the bee-simile (9. 283–293) and its application to Cato. Via a detailed analysis of the motif, the passage, and the context as well as the inter- and intratextual aspects of Lucan’s Bildsprache (especially with respect to Vergil’s Georgics) the author discusses how the Lucanean Cato can be understood and how he may be assessed with regard to an interpretation of the narrative as a whole. The elaborate simile not only gives a frightening insight into the figure’s character, but also, by evoking the similes previously used for Pompey, it inevitably draws the characters into relation with each other. The famous, but perhaps simplistic idea that Cato, the perfect stoic and republican, is the real ‘hero’of the poem, is challenged

DIE MORALISCHE UND SITTLICHE TÄTIGKEIT VON MARCUS PORCIUS CATO AUF GRUND DES WERKES 'DE AGRI CULTURA'
The aim of this article is to depict the selected aspects of both moral and social activity of Marcus
Porcius Cato. The author compares his views as presented in the masterpiece De agri cultura, with
ancient authors’ accounts concerning Cato’s conduct in social life.
seines Lebens gewesen seien.

The Remediation of Fact-Checks on Social Media: Insights from a Multi-Platform Content Analysis
The rise of social media has escalated the spread of misinformation, and the practice of fact-checking has become a key tool in the fight against it. Over time, the practice of fact-checking evolved and in recent years, fact-checking practices have shifted to social media platforms. However, social media’s unique logic requires fact-checkers to adapt—or “remediate” - their content to these platforms, which can prove to be challenging. Research is currently lacking on how fact-checks are remediated to this new format. This study examined how fact-checking organizations remediate their website fact-checks to different social media platforms, through an extensive content analysis (N = 14.891) of website and social media fact-checks published by eight fact-checking organizations (Belgium, the US, the UK). Results show that transfer rates from the website to social media are generally high, but that there are differences across organizations. Fact-checks are diffused to social media with an initial widespread burst across platforms but are often not re-shared after this. Reposting of content happens mostly within the platform, with reposts across platforms occurring less often. There is a prevalence of hard news topics both in website fact-checks as on social media, indicating no trend of news softening.Funding

The elder Cato: A philological reassessment
M. Porcius Cato (cos. 195 sc B.C.E.) has been a focal point of study of the literature and politics of Rome of the second century sc B.C.E. He has sometimes been seen as a study in contradictions--an enemy of Greek influence who partook of Greek influences, an enemy of luxury who indulged himself later in life, an enemy of money-lenders who was himself a money-lender, a man with rational convictions interwoven with irrational prejudices--and as a short-sighted, narrow, self-interested politician. By expanding upon recent historical studies of Cato and his role in the development of the Roman cultural self-image, a better integration of all the evidence will be proposed. Reflected in the preserved words and actions of Cato is a creative, thoughtful, practical, and ideologically balanced approach to rhetoric, politics, and social mores. He judged things Greek on the basis of their compatibility with Roman standards, and is not attested as having characterized anything as worthless merely because it was foreign. He claimed to be no enemy of harmless indulgence, but indulgence which led to corruption he fought to control. He advocated regulation of interest rates, not the abolition of lending at interest, and himself engaged in maritime loans, which were transactions of a different sort. His rational positions were argued with emotional conviction, but betray no indication of reactionary prejudice. His political acts are not obviously calculated primarily in self-interest, but he recognized areas of individual conduct which were detrimental to the stability and viability of the Roman state, and attacked them in court as he did in the legislative arena. It is no surprise that among later Romans he became an exemplar of virtue for his consistent adherence to his stated principles.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:45:04Z (GMT). Cato Uticensis als literarische Figur im Supplementum Lucani (1640) des Thomas May: Rezeption antiker Historiographie und Epik unter Charles I.
In 1640 Thomas May publishes his Supplementum Lucani in hexameters. His Continuation of Lucan's Historicall Poem till the Death of Iulius Caesar in blank verse has already appeared in 1630 and - in a second version - in 1633. As republican the author is fond of M. Porcius Cato Uticensis, depicting Caesar's opponent as a stoic and wise man and a timeless symbol of liberty. May's Supplementum was read as integral part of Lucan's Bellum Civile up to the 18th century, when Joseph Addison and Johann Christoph Gottsched wrote their Cato-plays
The anchor baby: discursive constructions of immigrant subjects
Political rhetoric delivered through sound bites on cable news networks can be easy to dismiss, because there is relatively little nuance in the coverage of political issues. The anchor baby debate from the midterm elections in 2010 is a perfect example. These discursive strands impact our conceptions of ourselves, our relation to society, and our voting behavior. Media-communicated narratives construct subjectivities. These subjects are then made manifest through policy decisions. To address the implications of the coverage of the anchor baby in the midterm elections in 2010 in the United States, I conducted a critical discourse analysis of news segments from Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC. A consistent picture of the undocumented immigrant parent of the anchor baby became clear. The discourse reinforces the demonized undocumented immigrant subject, and reaffirms the responsibility of the immigrant mother in passing social ills on to the next generation through birth. The discourse also normalizes the dehumanization of undocumented immigrants in the United States. In order to address the existing injustices experienced by undocumented communities, we must critically engage with the media’s role in constructing and normalizing the criminal undocumented immigrant.M.A.Includes bibliographical referencesby Genevieve Cat
The impact of leadership on politics and Ebenezer Theodore Joshua and Robert Milton Cato, 2012
This study examines the contributions of Joshua and Cato as government and opposition political leaders in the politics and political development of SVG. Checklist of variable of political development is used to ensure objectivity. Various theories of leadership and political development are highlighted. The researcher found that these theories cannot fully explain the conditions existing in small island nations like SVG. SVG is among the few nations which went through stages of transition from colonialism to associate statehood, to independence. This had significant effect on the people and particularly the leaders who inherited a bankrupt country with limited resources and persistent civil disobedience. With regards to political development, the mass of the population saw this as some sort of salvation for fulfillment of their hopes and aspirations. Joshua and Cato led the country for over thirty years. In that period, they have significantly changed the country both in positive and negative directions. These leaders made promises of a better tomorrow if their followers are prepared to make sacrifices. The people obliged with sacrifices, only to become disillusioned because they have not witnessed the promised salvation. The conclusions drawn from the findings suggest that in the process of competing for political power, these leaders have created a series of social ills in SVG. Discourses and other issues are centered on personality and political party loyalty. This has stifled loyalty to the state and helped to maintain an authoritarian system
Wrestling with Japanese Tribalism Emerging Collaborative Opportunities For India and Japan
Japanese firms, with their strong technology base and high domestic factor costs, have the potential of teaming with India, with its more basic infrastructure and eight times the population. Japan's poorly-performing excess capital could fuel India's strongly-developing middle class and robust entrepreneurialism. Especially promising are collaborative information technology projects. What stands in the way of a greatly expanded relationship? Much of the blockage stems from Japan's insularism, an impetus here labeled tribalism. A hopeful dimension is that this tribalism can be clearly defined as archaic, recognized as detrimental, and then toned-down. Further points for development include an active campaign to encourage diversity in Japan, teaming up to provide alternatives to investment in neighboring China, and agitating for representation on the UN Security Council. India can help initiate all these processes, and can in turn benefit from a Japan reaching out for regional economic partnerships.homogeneity; tribalism; UN Security Council; partnership; immigration; trade; e-Japan strategy
