    The effects of pre-task music on exercise performance and associated psycho-physiological responses: a systematic review with multilevel meta-analysis of controlled studies

    This systematic review summarized the studies that examined the pre-task music effects on performance aspects and quantitatively analyzed their outcomes. A systematic search for controlled studies investigating the acute effects of pre-task music on physical performance, cognitive aspects and associated psycho-physiological responses was performed through Scopus, PubMed, Web of Science and Cochrane Library databases up to 17 May 2023, with thirty studies fulfilled the inclusion criteria. Data was analyzed using the robust multilevel meta-analysis model of standardized mean difference "SMD" with 95% confidence intervals (95%CI) and prediction intervals (PI) were reported. Pre-task music induced improvements of completion time (SMD = -0.24; 95% CI = -0.46 to -0.01; PI = -0.82 to 0.35; p = 0.04), relative mean power (RMP) (SMD = 0.38; 95% CI = 0.16 to 0.60; PI = -0.36 to 1.12; p = 0.003) and fatigue (SMD = -0.20; 95% CI = -0.32 to -0.09; PI = -0.36 to -0.05; p = 0.01), moderate effects on relative peak power (RPP) (SMD = 0.53; 95% CI = 0.21 to 0.85; PI = -0.42 to 1.48; p = 0.005), and high effect on feeling scale (FS) (SMD = 2.42; 95% CI = 0.52 to 4.31; PI = -11.43 to 16.26; p = 0.03). Greater benefits were recorded in jumping performance in males than females (p = 0.01), and for active than trained subjects for completion time (p = 0.02), RPP (p = 0.02) and RMP (p = 0.03). Larger benefits were obtained for FS post-warming up than after testing (p = 0.04). Self-selected music induced greater effects than pseudo- and pre-selected for performance decrement index (p = 0.05) and FS (p = 0.02). It could be concluded that pre-task music improved psychological responses and fatigue-related symptoms associated with exercise performance enhancement

    The effect of time-of-day on short-term repetitive maximal performance, cognitive ability and psychological variables in adolescents

    Previous studies investigating the diurnal variation of physiological and psychological variables during exercise have yielded conflicting results. The present investigation was designed to assess the impact of time-of-day on short-term repetitive maximal performance [i.e., single and two consecutive bouts of 5m shuttle run test (5mSRT), long jump test] as well as cognitive ability and psychological variables [i.e., mood states (POMS) and Hooper questionnaire] in male and female adolescents. In a randomized study design, 21 healthy adolescents (12 females and 9 males; age: 15.9±1.04 years) performed at 08h00 and 16h00 two consecutive 5mSRT (with 20 min of rest interval in-between), to assess the greatest distance (GD), the total distance (TD), the average distance (AD) and the fatigue index (FI), and the long jump test (LJT). Perceived exertion (RPE) was recorded immediately after each 5mSRT. The POMS and Hooper questionnaires and the digit-cancellation test (i.e., attention) were realized during each session. The results showed that TD and AD were greater in the morning than in the afternoon during the 1st (p = 0.048 and 0.048, respectively) and the 2nd (p = 0.0016 and 0.0017, respectively) 5mSRT; while GD was time-of-day independent (p = 0.16). For the FI, results demonstrated a significant time-of-day effect with highest values recorded in the afternoon compared to the morning during the 2nd 5mSRT (p = 0.017). In contrast, attention scores and the long jump test performance recorded before and after each 5mSRT were time-of-day independent for all measures (p > 0.05). Likewise, POMS parameters [anxiety (p = 0.15), depression (p = 0.71), anger (p = 0.23), fatigue (p = 0.07), confusion (p = 0.58), vigor (p = 0.16), TMD (p = 0.06) and interpersonal relationships (p = 0.19)], RPE [1st (p = 0.22) and 2nd (p = 0.43) 5mSRT] and delayed onset muscle soreness (p = 0.34) were time-of-day independent; while, fatigue (p = 0.03), sleep (p = 0.01) and stress (p = 0.027) estimated by the Hooper questionnaire were higher in the afternoon compared to the morning. In conclusion, morning is more effective than afternoon session for improving short-term repetitive maximal performance and reducing fatigue during the 5mSRT for adolescents. However, regarding psychological parameters and cognitive function and contrarily to previous researches, there is no time-of-day effects

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Variations on the Author

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     The problem-solving method:Efficacy for learning and motivation in the field of physical education

    Background: In pursuit of quality teaching and learning, teachers seek the best method to provide their students with a positive educational atmosphere and the most appropriate learning conditions. Objectives: The purpose of this study is to compare the effects of the problem-solving method vs. the traditional method on motivation and learning during physical education courses. Methods: Fifty-three students (M age 15 ± 0.1 years), in their 1st year of the Tunisian secondary education system, voluntarily participated in this study, and randomly assigned to a control or experimental group. Participants in the control group were taught using the traditional methods, whereas participants in the experimental group were taught using the problem-solving method. Both groups took part in a 10-hour experiment over 5 weeks. To measure students' situational motivation, a questionnaire was used to evaluate intrinsic motivation, identified regulation, external regulation, and amotivation during the first (T0) and the last sessions (T2). Additionally, the degree of students' learning was determined via video analyses, recorded at T0, the fifth (T1), and T2. Results: Motivational dimensions, including identified regulation and intrinsic motivation, were significantly greater (all p &lt; 0.001) in the experimental vs. the control group. The students' motor engagement in learning situations, during which the learner, despite a degree of difficulty performs the motor activity with sufficient success, increased only in the experimental group (p &lt; 0.001). The waiting time in the experimental group decreased significantly at T1 and T2 vs. T0 (all p &lt; 0.001), with lower values recorded in the experimental vs. the control group at the three-time points (all p &lt; 0.001). Conclusions: The problem-solving method is an efficient strategy for motor skills and performance enhancement, as well as motivation development during physical education courses. </p

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
