Health-Care Providers' Preparedness for H1N1/09 Influenza Prevention and Treatment in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

\ud In Tanzania, the first case of H1N1/09 influenza was reported in September 2009. By March 2010, the reported number of cases was 770 with one death. Due to shortage of qualified human resources, essential medicines and laboratory supplies in health facilities, it was not known how well health-care providers in the country were prepared to deal with the pandemic. The study was conducted from December 2009 to May 2010 in public hospitals and private community pharmacies in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. Fifty-three prescribers and 200 dispensers were interviewed to assess their knowledge on the prevention and treatment of H1N1/09 influenza, and dissemination of correct information to the public regarding the pandemic. Most participants had inadequate knowledge on the transmission, prevention and management of H1N1/09 influenza. The majority of prescribers knew neither the antiviral drugs recommended for the treatment of H1N1 influenza (64%) nor their adverse effects (92.5%). The drug dispensers' knowledge was also inadequate regarding the transmission, prevention and treatment of H1N1/09 influenza. Forty-one (20.5%) salespersons without formal training in pharmaceutical or medical sciences were found dispensing and supervising the pharmacies. Most participants had misconceptions on how H1N1/09 virus was transmitted. The results of the study revealed gaps in the knowledge of the health-care providers on the prevention and treatment of H1N1/09 influenza infection. This indicates the need for strengthening of health-care systems and provision of continuing education and professional development for health-care providers on new and re-emerging diseases in the community.\u

Coexistence of the Kondo effect and spin glass physics in Fe-doped NbS2

    No full text
We report the coexistence of the Kondo effect and spin glass behavior in Fe-doped NbS2 single crystals. The FexNbS2 shows the resistance minimum and negative magnetoresistance due to the Kondo effect, and exhibits no superconducting behavior at low temperatures. The resistance curve follows a numerical renormalization-group theory using the Kondo temperature K for x = 0.01 as evidence of Kondo effect. Scanning tunneling microscope/spectroscopy (STM/STS) revealed the presence of Fe atoms near sulfur atoms and asymmetric spectra. The magnetic susceptibility exhibits a feature of spin glass. The static critical exponents determined by the universal scaling of the nonlinear part of the susceptibility suggest a three-dimensional Heisenberg spin glass. The doped-Fe atoms in the intra- and inter-layers revealed by the x-ray result can realize the coexistence of the Kondo effect and spin glass

Improving the piezoelectric properties of thick-film PZT: the influence of paste composition, powder milling process and electrode material

This paper details improvements of the d33 coefficient for thick-film Lead–Zirconate–Titanate (PZT) layers. In particular, the effect that the powder milling process has on particle size, shape and distribution has been investigated. Ball milled, jet milled and attritor milled powders were obtained from Morgan Electro-Ceramics Ltd. These powders were mixed with various ratios of lead borosilicate glass in the range of 5–20% by weight and an appropriate quantity of Electro-Science Laboratories (ESL) 400 solvent to formulate a screen printable thixotropic paste. The use of a polymer top electrode to reduce the number of firing cycles the PZT layer is subjected to was also investigated. The results show that the highest values of d33 were obtained from the ball milled powder with 10% glass content, but the most consistent results were obtained from the attritor milled samples. The samples printed with a polymer top electrode have shown an average increase of around 15% in the value of d33

Development of an Immunochromatographic Kit for Rapid Diagnosis of H5 Avian Influenza Virus Infection

Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) caused by the H5N1 subtype has given rise to serious damage in poultry industries in Asia. The virus has expanded its geographical range to Europe and Africa, posing a great risk to human health as well. For the control of avian influenza, a rapid diagnosis by detecting the causative virus and identifying its subtype is essential. In the present study, a rapid diagnosis kit combining immunochromatography with enzyme immunoassay which detects the H5 HA antigen of influenza A virus was developed using newly established anti-H5 HA monoclonal antibodies. The present kit specifically detected all of the H5 influenza viruses tested, and did not react with the other HA subtypes. H5 HA antigens were detected from swabs and tissue homogenates of chickens infected with HPAI virus strain A/chicken/Yamaguchi/7/04 (H5N1) from 2 days post inoculation. The kit showed enough sensitivity and specificity for the rapid diagnosis of HPAI
