Effect of lycopene supplementation on semen quality and reproductive performance in rabbit
[EN] A total of 18 hybrid strain Martini male rabbits were randomly divided into three experimental groups. The animals in the first and second groups drank water with 0.1 and 0.5 g/l of lycopene addition (B and C groups, respectively), while water without any supplement was administered to the control group rabbits (A group) for 8 weeks. Semen was collected from 18 bucks (6 animals/group) for 5 consecutive weeks. Ejaculate volume was determined by graduated test tube and sperm concentration was calculated by Neubauer chamber. Sperm motility was evaluated subjectively by a phase contrast microscope and forward progressive motility (FPM) scored 1¿4 (low-high). Sperm viability was assessed by nigrosin/eosin (N/E) staining procedure. At the end of the semen evaluation period, 20 females per group were inseminated on day 11 post partum with a pool of semen collected from each experimental group. Data showed that the highest level of lycopene (C group) resulted in a significantly greater volume of ejaculate and total number of sperm than in the control group (0.98 vs. 0.78 ml and 364 vs. 227, P0.05). This study shows the positive effects of lycopene supplementation on semen production and refrigerated semen characteristics. Lycopene supplementation of drinking water could have interesting applications in field conditions, although further research into the role of this antioxidant in animal production is needed.Mangiagalli, M.; Cesari, V.; Cerolini, S.; Luzi, F.; Toschi, I. • Volatile markers: this sheet contains data of volatile markers of the virgin olive oils sensory defects winey-vinegary and rancid, sensory characteristics and corresponding odor threshold relating to an oil matrix.
• Relative areas: this sheet contains data of relative areas of volatile compounds selected to emulate winey-vinegary and rancid defects in VOOs in a set of 60 samples and in RMs provided by the International Olive Council for each of the defects (RM IOC).
• Formulations RM AV: this sheet contains data of the main formulations (volatile compounds and concentrations in mg/kg) emulating winey-vinegary aroma in virgin olive oil and evaluation by assessors in terms of suitability as possible RM.

Panel test is the only sensory method included in international regulations of virgin olive oils and its application is compulsory. At present, there is no reference material (RM), in the strict sense of the term, to be used as a validated standard for sensory defects of virgin olive oil with which tasters can be trained. Usually, real samples of virgin olive oils assessed by many panels for the International Olive Council (IOC) ring tests are used as materials of reference in panel training and control. These data correspond to the work carried out to formulate RM that emulate rancid and winey-vinegary defects found in virgin olive oils with the aim of providing reproducible RMs that can be prepared on demand. Mesoscopic two-phase model for describing apparent slip in micro-channel flows
The phenomenon of apparent slip in micro-channel flows is analyzed by means of a two-phase mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann model including non-ideal fluid-fluid and fluid-wall interactions. The weakly inhomogeneous limit of this model is solved analytically. The present mesoscopic approach permits to access much larger scales than molecular dynamics, and comparable with those attained by continuum methods. However, at variance with the continuum approach, the existence of a gas layer near the wall does not need to be postulated a priori, but emerges naturally from the underlying non-ideal mesoscopic dynamics. It is therefore argued that a mesoscopic lattice Boltzmann approach with non-ideal fluid-fluid and fluid-wall interactions might achieve an optimal compromise between physical realism and computational efficiency for the study of channel micro-flows
