This study aims to demonstrate to what extent the female characters in short stories from the books Il paradiso, 1970, Un'altra vita, 1973, and Boh, 1976, by the Italian author Alberto Moravia (1907-1990) present themselves as unfit individuals. These three collections were chosen because they bring up pressing issues of Moravian poetics. This thesis talks, in particular, about ineptitude. The 1970s female-protagonists can be read in this light, because typical expedients of inaptitude – a sign of the problematic individual – appear in the eighteen short stories of the corpus (translated in full in this thesis), such as the lassitude of the individual facing the lived reality, the body as split object and commodity, the fetishism of objects and incommunicability. These narrators, protagonists of the chosen stories, struggle until the last moment trying to deal with their existences. In the end, however, everything is reduced to an apathetic and disenchanted view of the world, another mark of the subject's ineptitude. Moravia exposes the protagonists’ neurotic psychology by portraying them as cynical and distant women. The oral tone, rather prominent in some short stories, can be read as the elegiac confession of these characters. The protagonists of Il paradiso, Un’altra vita, and Boh make themselves heard through their own narrations, exposing their dramas in a very theatrical way.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)88887.196140/2018-0

Modernization of Orang Asli in Malaysia exposed them to lifestyles related diseases. This study was conducted to evaluate the effects of modernization on lifestyles related diseases amongst Orang Asli at Kuala Boh Selangor Malaysia. Data on demographics, health and treatment seeking preferences were collected through questionnaires and analyzed. Participants were males and females (n=35), mean age 40.8 from Muslim Semai group. Most of the females are homemakers, and male does less labour work. Less mobility exposed them to health-related diseases. The modern way of life has exposed Orang Asli toward a lifestyles related diseases in Malaysia. Keywords: Orang Asli; Health seeking behaviours; Lifestyle-related diseases, Modernization of Orang Asli eISSN 251T-7528 © 2017 The Author. Reuse of knowledge assets from repositories : a mixed methods study

No full text
Reuse of information retrieved from an electronic knowledge repository and how this complements person-to-person interactions are poorly understood. I developed a research model that examined factors influencing how individuals benefit from reuse of knowledge assets. Using a mixed method approach, two empirical studies were conducted to test the model. The results showed that two key factors helped users to overcome difficulties in reusing knowledge assets: seeking assistance from and sharing a common perspective with the author of the asset. The study explains when and how individuals receive benefits from knowledge reuse. When individuals reuse complex knowledge assets in domains with which they are unfamiliar, they apparently gain more benefit by contacting the author; sharing a common perspective with the author also facilitates asset reuse. Thus both electronic repositories and person-to-person interaction mechanisms complement one another in facilitating knowledge sharing.Accepted versio

Boh a poznanie vo svetle Faustovho voluntarizmu

The author of the contribution discloses against a religious backdrop overriding motifs and aims of Faustus unbridled voluntarism. His driving force seems to be, in compliance with Schopenhauer ́s theory, human intellect. The overriding motif lies in his vision of being Almighty, which is reflected in his craving to be god-like. The human will oscillates in the space between a fallacious idea about the status of a deity and limitations of the academic knowledge. On a broader level, the author shows that the Faustian voluntarism affects not only Goethe ́s literary character but also man of the 21st century more than ever

Investigation of a novel decision support metric for head and neck adaptive radiation therapy (ART) using a real-time in-vivo portal dosimetry system

In adaptive radiation therapy (ART) of head and neck cancer, any significant anatomical changes observed are used to adapt the treatment plan to maintain target coverage without elevating the xerostomia risk. However, the additional resources required for ART pose a challenge for broad-based implementation. It is hypothesized that the transit fluence change is associated with volumetric change in the vicinity of the target and therefore can be used as a decision support metric (DMS) for ART. This was evaluated by comparing the fluence with volumetric changes in twenty-four patients. Transit fluence was measured by an in-vivo portal dosimetry system (RTPD). Weekly cone beam computed-tomography (CBCT) was used to determine volume change in the rectangular region of interest (ROI) from condyloid process to C6. The integrated fluence through the ROI and the salivary glands (SG) on the day of the CBCT scan was calculated with the first treatment as the baseline. The correlation between fluence and volume changes was determined. Logistic regression was also used to associate the 5% ROI volume reduction replanning trigger-point and the fluence change. The model was assessed by a chi-squared test. The area (AUC) under the receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) was also determined. The xerostomia risk was assessed by the scores change of the patients’ MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI). The association of the MDADI with age, gender, mean dose to SG, weight, volumetric and fluence changes were assessed using Spearman rank-correlation. A total of 108 pairs of CBCT and RTPD measurements were obtained. The correlation between fluence and volumetric changes were found to be -0.837 (p-value<0.001). The AUC of the ROC was found to be 0.91. The correlation between SG-specific fluence and volumetric changes was found to be -0.62 (p-value<0.001). Twenty-one patients responded to the MDADI. Fluence and volumetric changes were found to have association with the physical, functional and total MDADI changes. No significant association with age, gender, and weight change were found. A transit fluence based DSM is not only a viable alternative to serial CBCT in assisting clinicians in the patient selection, but also lowers the resource barrier of ART implementation.Ph.D.Includes bibliographical reference

Donne ribelli, donne oggetto: il mondo femminile nei racconti di Alberto Moravia

No full text
L’ultima sezione è invece dedi- cata a una analisi diacronica delle tre raccolte da cui si evince come i racconti femminili siano l’officina preparatoria del personaggio di desideria de La vita interiore (1978).This essay aims to study how alberto Moravia depicts the female character in his three books (Il Paradiso, Un’altra vita e Boh) that were published from 1970 to 1976. specifically, the author explores the common elements of the stories, high- lighting the narrator’s voice status, the women’s condition in the 70s between social integration and the “buona selvaggia” myth, the alienation and the prob- lem with the reality relationship. The last section focuses, on the other hand, on a diachronic analysis of the three books, where the female characters are an anticipation of his famous character desideria (La vita interiore [1978])
