Along the way, he discovers a mysterious, heavy, dark lens. As he holds it up to the sun to inspect it better, he is transported to a dark and dangerous world filled with terrible monsters. Luckily, upon holding the lens up to the sun a second time, he is transported back to his own reality.However, he is now late for work and feels compelled to explain to his co-worker, Turd, why. Turd, also intrigued by the lens, locks up the station and forces Alex to show him how it works. Alex agrees to let Turd have a brief look and the two boys are once again transported back to the horrible alternate reality. However upon returning, Alex discovers he has lost the keys to the Gas N’ Grab and must return to retrieve them.Alex soon realizes that Turd is entranced by this horrible world and, as a result, the next trip over isn’t as brief. Alex and Turd end up wrestling over the lens and it becomes lost in a nearby swamp. To make matters worse, it is now getting dark and the lens won’t activate without sunlight. The two must now travel into the burned out city to avoid creatures lurking in the darkness and to hopefully survive the night.This book will appeal to teens who are reluctant readers as it has a fast-moving plot and accessible language. The author expertly describes the setting and uses vivid imagery and sometimes violent descriptions of grim creatures and scenery which will appeal to readers who enjoy the horror genre. For example, upon arriving to the other side, a creature who “tore into a hunk of mangled meat with twitching legs” is noted by Alex. At only ninety-five pages, it is a quick read but sadly feels somewhat underdeveloped in character and plot. Alex and Turd’s characters are flat and there is no explanation as to where the lens might have come from or how the creatures on the other side became the inhabitants of such a disturbing world. Yet, despite some underdevelopment, it is refreshing to see expanded options for reluctant readers and diversity in hi-lo fiction, a category which typically deals primarily with teen issues and does not often tread into the genres of fantasy or horror.Recommended with Reservations: 2 out of 4 starsReviewer: Aleasha KachelAleasha Kachel is a Teacher Librarian at Westsyde Secondary School in Kamloops, BC. Barriers and Drivers to Business Growth and Innovativeness: Example of Polish Companies
Get PDFThe aim of the article is to analyse the factors and barriers affecting the growth and innovativeness of Polish enterprises. The author analysed the factors favouring and barriers limiting the growth and innovativeness of Polish enterprises, presenting the results of an empirical study conducted among 70 companies of different sizes. The sample was selected in a stratified random way, taking into account such strata as company size or section ofPKD (Polish Classification of Activities). It is a research-analytical study based on literature review, secondary data analysis and survey applying quantitative research techniques (CATI). The article thesis indicates a varying level of innovativeness of Polish companies strongly depending on the size of the company and limited development of innovation due, for example, to the lack of financial resources, insufficient research and developmentinfrastructure and poor cooperation between companies and scientific institutions. The findings also reveal that internal resources of firms such as human capital and adaptability and external factors such as regulatory stability and access to finance, are crucial for the implementation of innovation. The author concludes that effective elimination of barriers and active use of factors supporting innovativeness can significantly increase the competitiveness of Polish companies on the domestic and international markets.Celem artykułu była analiza czynników oraz barier wpływających na wzrost i innowacje polskich przedsiębiorstw. Autorka dokonała analizy czynników sprzyjających oraz barier ograniczających rozwój i innowacyjność polskich przedsiębiorstw, prezentując wyniki badań empirycznych przeprowadzonych wśród 70 firm różnej wielkości. Próba w badaniu została dobrana w sposób losowo-warstwowy, uwzględniający takie warstwy jak wielkości firmy, sekcje PKD. Artykuł ma charakter badawczo-analityczny, oparty na przeglądzie literatury, analizie danych wtórnych oraz badaniu ankietowym, które zastosowało ilościowe techniki badawcze (CATI). Teza artykułu wskazuje, że poziom innowacyjności polskich przedsiębiorstw jest silnie zróżnicowany w zależności od wielkości przedsiębiorstwa, a rozwój innowacji ograniczają m.in. brak zasobów finansowych, niewystarczająca infrastruktura badawczo-rozwojowa oraz niska współpraca między firmami a instytucjami naukowymi. Wyniki badań ujawniają również, że kluczowe znaczenie dla wdrażania innowacji mają zasoby wewnętrzne firm, takie jak kapitał ludzki i zdolność do adaptacji, oraz czynniki zewnętrzne, jak stabilność regulacyjna i dostęp do finansowania. Autorka konkluduje, że skuteczna eliminacja barier i aktywne wykorzystanie czynników wspierających innowacyjność mogą znacząco zwiększyć konkurencyjność polskich przedsiębiorstw na rynku krajowym i międzynarodowym

No full textThe article is aiming at presenting the profile of Tomasz Mirkowicz (1953-2003), an outstanding translator (among others, of K. Kesey, H. Matthews, G. Orwell) and, as it was universally believed, a “sophisticated” writer and literary critic. The author concentrates on the debut short story by Mirkowicz The Tunnel, published in 1984 un der the pen name Tomasz Minon in an underground Independent Publishing House NOWA (Niezależna Oficyna Wydawnicza NOWA). The story, pretending to be a coverage of a strike initiated on December 13, 1981 in an unnamed coal mine in Silesia, written in the tradition of utopian fiction and science-fiction, was to inspire the potential reader to undertake to work underground for years to come.
However, the attempt to depict the truth of the Poles-against-Poles war in The Tunnel failed, exposing the author’s helplessness against the political and social reality of the time. Although the short story did not become a “stunning allegory” nor a universal parable, it heralded the future form typical of the later texts by Mirkowicz (as Geography Lesson [Lekcja geografii], Lipograms [Lipogramy], novel The Pilgrimage to the Holy Land of Egypt [Pielgrzymka do Ziemi Świętej Egiptu]), built in a pattern characteristic of postmodernism. No full textThe paper presents the method suitable for optimization of parameters and applied to design aircraft subassemblies on the example of a swept wing. It outlines the assumptions that are necessary to develop a mathematical model and describes constraints that served as the basis to develop an algorithm and describe the corresponding procedures in the GRIP (Graphics Interactive Programming) language that is a part of the CAD/CAM/CAE Unigraphics system. The further part of the study comprises discussion how the wing parameters and the mass functional are affected by the rigidity constraints and strength constraints. The algorithm for designing aircraft components was finally developed with inputs to the multicriteria design process “Web Modelling” of an aircraft body. The study also includes initial assumptions to algorithms originally developed by the author and dedicated to the modelling of components incorporated into aircraft structures.W artykule zaprezentowano metodykę optymalizacji parametrów w zastosowaniu do projektowania zespołów samolotu na przykładzie skrzydła skośnego. Przedstawiono główne założenia niezbędne do opracowania matematycznego modelu. Selection of controlling-instruments for optimal strategytransmission in small and medium sized family firms
No full textOb und insbesondere wie mittelständische Familienunternehmen ihre vorhandenen Controlling-Instrumente zur strategischen Steuerung nutzen, ist Kernfrage dieses Dissertationsprojekts. Der Autor zeigt anhand dreier qualitativer Fallstudien einen generellen Zusammenhang zwischen der Unternehmensstrategie und dem operativ orientierten Instrumentenset auf. Als Ergebnis der Arbeit sind Einflussfaktoren auf die strategische Nutzung von Controlling-Instrumenten identifiziert und theoretisiert worden. Aufbauend auf einer Typologie werden zudem Gestaltungsempfehlungen für die optimale Auswahl und Gestaltung von mittelständischen Instrumentensets formuliert.Whether and especially how medium-sized family companies use their existing controlling instruments for transmission of strategy is the core question of this dissertation project. Based on three qualitative case studies, the author presents a general connection between the company strategy and the operationally oriented instrument set. As a result of the work influence factors on the strategic use of controlling instruments have been identified and theorized. Based on a typology, design recommendations are also formulated for the optimal selection and design of controlling instruments in small and medium sized family firms
