La microcircolazione nel melanoma maligno e nelle neoformazioni cutanee benigne. Osservazioni flussimetriche con metodica laser-Doppler

Background. In order to obtain an early diagnosis and a more reliable prognosis of the cutaneous malignant melanoma, the microcirculation of 31 pigmented skin lesions before the surgical remotion was studied. The aim was double: to evaluate the presence of a statistically significant difference between benign and malignant flow and, at the same time, to establish a correlation between the values of flow found in malignant melanomas and their thickness. Methods. The method of research used was the laser-Doppler flowmetry, which was performed on the lesions and subsequently compared with that obtained on the contralateral body part or on the adjacent healthy skin in each patient. Two parameters for the benign and malignant lesions have been used, i.e. the difference and the relation between the flowmetry readings of the lesions and those of the contralateral healthy skin. The same parameters were used to compare the flowmetry in melanomas and their thickness. Results. The mean blood flow readings obtained in melanomas and in benign cutaneous lesions was, respectively, 25.618 and 4.465, so that no significant differences between the two groups of lesions was found. Moreover, no correlation was found between melanomas and their thickness. Conclusions. The results obtained stress the short efficacy of the laser- Doppler technique in the early diagnosis and in the prognosis of the malignant cutaneous melanomas of the skin

Efficacy of intramuscular interferon-ß in reducing relapses in the treatment of male patients with condylomata acuminata

INTRODUCTION Numerous trials using interferon in the treatment of HPV infections have been reported. IFN-β has antiviral, antiproliferative and immunopotentiating activities. The aim of this randomized open study was to evaluate the effectiveness of intramuscular IFN-β in reducing relapses versus both electrocautery and combined treatment, i.e. IFN-β plus electrocautery, in a group of male patients affected by genital warts. PATIENTS AND METHODS A total of 84 male patients (mean age 32 years) with recent genital warts were randomly enrolled into three groups: 33 patients were treated with electrocautery; 25 patients received only intramuscular IFN-β (3 000 000 IU daily for 10 days); 26 patients were treated with both electrocautery and intramuscular IFN-β (3 000 000 IU daily for 10 days). The patients were checked monthly. Residual disease was treated with electrocautery until complete clearance. RESULTS After 1 month 42% of the patients treated with electrocautery, 29% of those treated with TFN-β and 39% of those treated with combined therapy had been cured. Residual disease rates gradually decreased in all groups during the follow-up, but more quickly in the patients who had received IFN-β therapy. No side-effects after IFN-β treatment were observed. CONCLUSION IFN-β monotherapy is not the first choice treatment for genital warts, though it may be useful in patients with relapsing condylomata acuminata resistant to other therapy

Valutazione della presenza di infezione da HPV nei partner di donne affette

In recent years the interest in genital HPV infection has increased, especially because of its supposed association with dysplasia and cancer of the female genital tract. The aim of the study was to evaluate the male partners of women with genital HPV infection, with regard to the possible connections among the clinical features of this infection in both partners. We studied 157 partners of women suffering from HPV genital tract infection. Condylomata acuminata were searched for by visual inspection; subclinical lesions were identified by 5 optical magnification lens after application of 5% acetic acid for 5 minutes. We obtained the following results: 55% of the male partners of women with HPV infection had condylomata, but this percentage decreased to 37% when infection was associated with CIN. Our data stress that transmissibility of infection to the male partner is easier in the presence of condylomata. In fact, partners of women with CIN had the lower percentage of clinical or subclinical HPV skin lesions

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
