Translating Dreams Across Cultures: Advertising and the Localization of Consumerist Values and Aspirations
The paper investigates the shift from the verbal to the visual, and from informative to evocative messages, in the history of advertising. When did cross-reference to cultural values, topoi, norms and beliefs become an essential tool of advertising (Van Zoonen 1994; Livolsi 1987)? In other words, what persuaded advertisers and their clients to stop informing prospective customers about products and start selling them lifestyles and dreams, both conscious and subconscious? A possible answer to these questions is suggested, and implications more directly related to the translation of advertising texts are also addressed

The (Gendered) Construction of ‘Home’ in Contemporary Italian and US Food Advertising: Or, What Is Home Without a Mother?
The paper investigates some of the ways in which contemporary food advertising in Italy and the U.S. identify the concept of 'home' with the figure of the 'homemaker'. The homemaker is not only invariably female, and happy of her role in society: according to food advertising, she does not make a home for herself, since home can only be made for one's family. Hence, one is defined (as a homemaker, which is depicted as a most natural way to be for an Italian or American woman) by her having a husband and children to care for. Six ads and commercials for well-known food brands, circulated in Italy and the U.S. between 2005 and 2009, are discussed in more depth as case-studies
Viologen-functionalized poly(ionic liquids): Spectroelectrochemical and QCM-D studies
Ionic Liquids (ILs) and poly(Ionic Liquids) (PoILs) have fully tunable properties due to their different ion combinations as well as cation or anion functionalization, which results in smart materials with endless possibilities. In this study, a solid electrochromic PoIL was synthesized using a novel functionalizable and polymerizable IL (1-propyl-3-vinylimidazolium chloride bromide) and a viologen (4,4′-bipyridine) that reacted to form a monomer. Its subsequent polymerization resulted in a mechanically stable, highly ionically and electronically conductive electrochromic polyelectrolyte with a thermal decomposition temperature higher than 309 °C and a glass transition temperature of 13 °C. Spectroelectrochemical studies of the polymer deposited as a thin film over a transparent conductive substrate demonstrated a reversible redox process with reduction and oxidation potentials of − 0.45 and − 0.3 V, respectively, which was accompanied by a reversible color change from colorless (oxidized state) to purple (reduced state) with an optical contrast of 19% at 525 nm, a switching time of nearly 20 s and a coloration efficiency of 60 cm2 C− 1. Additionally, the film was repetitively switched from colorless to purple and began to lose electroactivity after approximately 4 h and 400 cycles. However, electroactivity was still observed after 16 h or 1600 cycles. Moreover, quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring indicated that the polymer charge compensation process was accompanied by a huge viscoelastic change in the film, as demonstrated by the spread of the harmonics and important changes in dissipation. No Full Tex
Translating the Visual. The Importance of Visual Elements in the Translation of Advertising across Cultures
Under the traditional approach to translation, pictures and graphic layout are considered to be external to the translator’s realm. This paper suggests the possibility of an alternative approach to the translation of (print) advertisements, under which the verbal and the visual appear intrinsically linked: the text appears as a semiotic whole, where every sign is there for the translator to use.
Three examples confirm this interpretation, displaying the semiotic complexity of apparently referential pictures and showing how graphic layouts and pictures may be adapted across cultures. They also help disprove several stereotypes about the nature of the visual code as opposed to verbal language, such as the priority of the verbal over the visual, the immediacy of visual signs and the truthfulness of pictures, thus providing grounds for a more comprehensive view of the text and a more active use of visual elements by translators

Nanochromics: Old Materials, New Structures And Architectures For High Performance Devices
Due to the development of nanoscience, the interest in electrochromism has increased and new assemblies of electrochromic materials at nanoscale leading to higher efficiencies and chromatic contrasts, low switching times and the possibility of color tuning have been developed. These advantages are reached due to the extensive surface area found in nanomaterials and the large amount of organic electrochromic molecules that can be easily attached onto inorganic nanoparticles, as TiO2 or SiO2. Moreover, the direct contact between electrolyte and nanomaterials produces high ionic transfer rates, leading to fast charge compensation, which is essential for high performance electrochromic electrodes. Recently, the layer-by-layer technique was presented as an interesting way to produce different architectures by the combination of both electrochromic nanoparticles and polymers. The present paper shows some of the newest insights into nanochromic science. ©2008 Sociedade Brasileira de Química.19712481257Somani, P.R., Radhakrishnan, S., (2003) Mater. Chem. Evaluating The Performance Of Polypyrrole Nanowires On The Electrochemical Sensing Of Ammonia In Solution
This work encompasses the direct electrodeposition of polypyrrole nanowires onto Au substrates using different electrochemical techniques: normal pulse voltammetry (NPV) and constant potential method with the aim in applying these films for the first time in ammonia sensing in solution. The performance of these nanowire-based sensors are compared and evaluated in terms of: film morphology (analyzed with scanning electron microscopy); their sensitivity towards ammonia; electrochemical and contact angle measurements. For nanowires prepared by NPV, the sensitivity towards ammonia increases with increasing amount of electrodeposited polypyrrole, as expected due to the role of polypyrrole as electrochemical transducer for ammonia oxidation. On the other hand, nanowires prepared potentiostatically displayed an unexpected opposite behavior, attributed to the lower conductivity of longer polypyrrole nanowires obtained through this technique. These results evidenced that the analytical and physico-chemical features of nanostructured sensors can differ greatly from those of their conventional bulky analogous. © 2012 Elsevier B.V. QCM-D studies of polypyrrole influence on structure stabilization of beta phase of Ni(OH)(2) nanoparticles during electrochemical cycling
Pure β badly crystallized, βbc-Ni(OH)2, and hybrid βbc-Ni(OH)2/polypyrrole nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized and immobilized by electrophoretic deposition. The influence of polypyrrole (Ppy) on the structural stability with cycling was evaluated by Quartz Crystal Microbalance with Dissipation. The results show that Ppy stabilizes the NP structure avoiding stress features provoked by the formation of γ-NiOOH. Ppy remains oxidized during the entire process and, as it is doped with a big counter anion such as dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS-) which is not removed during cycling, avoids volumetric changes of Ni(OH)2 leading to higher cyclability. No Full Tex
MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank
