Metal/oxide Composites: Mechanisms of the Formation from the Thermal Decomposition of LaNi5

The formation of metal/oxide composites from the thermal decomposition of LaNi5 is analyzed by TG and DSC between room temperature and 700 °C. The reaction products are characterized by XRD, SEM and EDS. Based on the results obtained, the following global mechanisms are proposed: For temperature range between 160 °C and 600 °C 2LaNi5 + 13/2O2→La2O3 + 10NiO(1) For temperature range higher than 600 °C, two mechanisms were proposed as presented for each following equation: LaNi5 + 7/2O2→ LaNiO3 + 4NiO (2) 2LaNi5 + 7/2O2→ La2O3 + Ni → La2O3 + NiO → LaNiO3 + 10NiO (3) The conditions that promote the formation of metal/oxide composites are discussed according to these results..Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. Thermal annealing of photoanodes based on CdSe Qdots sensitized TiO2

Thermal annealing of photoanodes made of TiO2 nanotubes sensitized with CdSe quantum dots is studied. Heat treatment of these photoanodes in air can cause either an improvement or a serious drop in the photocurrent generation. Ligands or capping agents stabilize Qdots removing highly reactive dangling bonds on its surface but also they can act as a passivating layer that increases charge transfer resistance between Qdots and TiO2 nanotubes; therefore optimal conditions of thermal annealing are needed to improve efficiency of the interfacial charge transfer avoiding as far as possible the decomposition of the sensitizers. As a corollary of this study, a 2.5-fold increase in photocurrent value was reached after thermal annealing at 200 °C during at least two hours; while thermal treatments at temperature values higher than 250 °C can produce a deleterious effect on the conversion efficiency if the annealing time extends over a long period of time. Photoelectrochemistry, thermogravimetry and SEM microscopy were used as tools to propose a mechanism able to explain the observed behaviour.Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. -Based Upconverting Nanoparticles for Biomedical Applications

    No full text
This review summarizes essential information about the chemical stability of NaYF4-based upconverting nanoparticles (UCNPs) in aqueous solutions, a crucial aspect for achieving high quality standards for biomedical materials. We present an in-depth analysis of the major experimental evidence and proposed mechanisms that provide a theoretical framework for understanding UCNPs degradation, destabilization, and dissolution under different conditions such as media composition, temperature, particle size, and the synthetic methods employed. The ion release and disintegration of the UCNP crystal structure may trigger cytotoxic events within living organisms and impact on their optical properties, precluding their safe use in biological environments. Also, we present a summary of the characterization techniques' toolbox employed for monitoring and detecting these degradation processes. Closing the existing "information gap"that links UCNP physicochemical properties, such as solubility and chemical stability, with the biological response of living organisms or tissues, is vital for using these nanoparticles as biological tracer probes, theranostic vehicles, or for clinical purposes. The understanding of chemical phenomena at the nanoparticle solid-liquid interface is mandatory to complete the molecular picture of nanosized objects, orienting in a rational manner the efforts of research and development in the early stages of these functional materials.Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. Structural characterization of Au nano bipyramids: Reshaping under thermal annealing, the capping agent effect and surface decoration with Pt

Anisotropic gold nanoparticles offer potential applications due to their functionalities and shape-dependent properties. Reshaping noble metal nanoparticles is an interesting field with optical, surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy, catalytic applications and potential application as a photothermic therapy. This work comprises a structural study on gold nano bipyramids (Au NBPs) and nanodumbbells, and the evolution of Au NBPs capped with cetyltrimethylammonium bromide and dodecanethiol through an in situ and ex situ heating process in high vacuum. Also, we study the reshaping of Au NBPs by the addition of Pt to study the surface modification and the strain generated on a single particle by geometric phase analysis.Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. Enhancing the adsorption of CdSe quantum dots on TiO2 nanotubes by tuning the solvent polarity

The aim of this work is to report the effect of the solvent polarity on the adsorption of CdSe quantum dots (QDots) over the surface of TiO2 nanotubes and the influence of the coverage gained on the efficiency of photoanodes based on these materials. Particularly, it is shown that the amount of QDots adsorbed on TiO2 nanotubes can be tuned by using solvent mixtures of different polarity and volume ratios. An increase on QDots coverage was found when the polarity increases. What is noticeable is that the photoanode efficiency increased at a higher rate than the QDots coverage. For instance, a two-fold increase of coverage at a 50% acetone – 50% toluene ratio induces up to a seven-fold increase of the photocurrent values with respect to those obtained when the adsorption is performed from toluene. This effect is explained in terms of a different distribution of QDots along the nanotube walls depending on the solvent polarity used for the adsorption.Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. Methodologies for CdSe semiconductor quantum dots synthesis

There is an increasing interest in the study of CdSe quantum dots because of their size tunable properties derived from quantum confinement effect. Perhaps, it is the optical band gap the most remarkable property that can be controlled by the size of the particles. There is a large number of synthetic methods, among which the most used is the hot injection method, discussed with some detail in this communication.Fil: Torresan, Maria Fernanda. Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
