Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Full text linkThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Entidades e eixos de ação no Economia popular e solidária: Caso Cayambe, Ecuador
Full text linkThis research provides an exhaustive description of the presence of the popular and solidarity economy in Cayambe, Ecuador. For this, the qualitatively focused case study presents the entities and axes of action as variables through which the study was carried out, including the collection of documentation from local and regional institutions, in addition to the participating in observation for more than 25 years in that context. The results show that although savings and credit cooperatives, associative entities and solidarity entities are based on the development of the popular and solidarity economy, the opposite occurs with the community banks and the popular economic units. As for the second variable, the axes of action are organized into technical-practical and political-social, in which the technological development of the community accompanied by empowerment is respectively promoted. In conclusion, this study seeks to promote the follow-up of cases where the approximation of the popular and solidary economy, with the communities and their prospective settlement in the community, can be evidenced.Esta investigación realiza una descripción exhaustiva sobre la presencia de la economía popular y solidaria en Cayambe, Ecuador. Para ello, este estudio de caso enfocado cualitativamente presenta las entidades y los ejes de acción como variables sobre las cuales se profundizará a través de la recaudación de documentación de instituciones locales y regionales, además de la implicación de la observación participante por más de 25 años en dicho contexto. Los resultados demuestran que si bien las cooperativas de ahorro y crédito, entidades asociativas y entidades solidarias se encuentran asentadas en el desarrollo de la economía popular y solidaria ocurre lo contrario con las cajas comunales y las unidades económicas populares. En cuanto a la segunda variable, los ejes de acción se organizan en técnico-práctico y político-social, en la que se promueve respectivamente el desarrollo tecnológico de la comunidad acompañado del empoderamiento. En conclusión, este estudio busca impulsar el seguimiento de casos donde se permitan evidenciar la aproximación de la economía popular y solidaria con las comunidades y su prospectivo asentamiento en la colectividad. Esta pesquisa fornece uma descrição exaustiva da presença da economia popular e solidária em Cayambe, Equador. Para isso, o estudo de caso de abordagem qualitativa apresenta as entidades e eixos de ação como variáveis através das quais o estudo foi realizado, incluindo a coleta de documentação de instituições locais e regionais, além da participação em observação há mais de 25 anos. contexto. Os resultados mostram que, embora as cooperativas de poupança e crédito, entidades associativas e entidades solidárias sejam baseadas no desenvolvimento da economia popular e solidária, o contrário ocorre com os bancos comunitários e as unidades econômicas populares. Quanto à segunda variável, os eixos de ação estão organizados em técnico-prático e político-social, nos quais é promovido o desenvolvimento tecnológico da comunidade acompanhado de empoderamento. Concluindo, este estudo busca promover o acompanhamento de casos em que possa ser evidenciada a aproximação da economia popular e solidária, com as comunidades e seu futuro assentamento na comunidade
Variations on the Author
Full text link“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
Full text linkWe provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
