The influence of genetic variation in thirty selected genes on the clinical characteristics of early onset breast cancer

    No full text
Introduction: common variants that alter breast cancer risk are being discovered. Here, we determine how these variants influence breast cancer prognosis, risk and tumour characteristics. Methods: we selected 1,001 women with early onset nonfamilial invasive breast cancer from the Prospective study of Outcomes in Sporadic versus Hereditary breast cancer (POSH) cohort and genotyped 206 single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) across 30 candidate genes. After quality control, 899 cases and 133 SNPs remained. Survival analyses were used to identify SNPs associated with prognosis and determine their interdependency with recognized prognostic factors. To identify SNPs that alter breast cancer risk, association tests were used to compare cases with controls from the Wellcome Trust Case Control Consortium. To search for SNPs affecting tumour biology, cases were stratified into subgroups according to oestrogen receptor (ER) status and grade and tested for association. Results: we confirmed previous associations between increased breast cancer risk and SNPs in CASP8, TOX3 (previously known as TNRC9) and ESR1. Analysis of prognosis identified eight SNPs in six genes (MAP3K1, DAPK1, LSP1, MMP7, TOX3 and ESR1) and one region without genes on 8q24 that are associated with survival. For MMP7, TOX3 and MAP3K1 the effects on survival are independent of the main recognized clinical prognostic factors. The SNP in 8q24 is more weakly associated with independent effects on survival. Once grade and pathological nodal status (pN stage) were taken into account, SNPs in ESR1 and LSP1 showed no independent survival difference, whereas the effects of the DAPK1 SNP were removed when correcting for ER status. Interestingly, effects on survival for SNPs in ESR1 were most significant when only ER-positive tumours were examined. Stratifying POSH cases by tumour characteristics identified SNPs in FGFR2 and TOX3 associated with ER-positive disease and SNPs in ATM associated with ER-negative disease. Conclusions: we have demonstrated that several SNPs are associated with survival. In some cases this appears to be due to an effect on tumour characteristics known to have a bearing on prognosis; in other cases the effect appears to be independent of these prognostic factors. These findings require validatation by further studies in similar patient group

Lost in Consumerism: Existential and Linguistic Wanderings in Confusion d’instants (2003) by Gerty Dambury

    No full text
Guadeloupean author Gerty Dambury’s play Confusion d’instants (2003) is a treatment of the impact of globalization on the French and French Caribbean societies’ most disenfranchised members. It also explores the interaction of personal and collective memory with local, national, and global histories. Confusion d’instants depicts the lives of three characters belonging to different generations and genders, who each speak in a single tense (past, present, or future). Each character also has a personal fixation with specific objects of consumption, such as radios, cars, or household appliances. Through the experiences of these socially and culturally marginalized characters Dambury articulates a searing critique of contemporary Guadeloupean society and of global capitalist consumerism in general. Through a close reading of the play, the article will analyse Dambury’s dramatic reflection on globalization, forgotten histories, and social marginalization

Bakalaureusetöö on suunatud piimatootmisega tegeleva ettevõtte strateegilisele analüüsile. Praegune piimandussektori olukord on väga halb, kuna toorpiima hind on väga madal ning see raskendab piimatootjate olukorda. Kvantitatiivseks analüüsiks on uuritud majandusaasta aruannete erinevaid arvnäitajaid. Kvalitatiivseks osaks on autori läbi viidud intervjuu ettevõtte juhiga. Töö käigus selgus, et strateegiline analüüs on ettevõttes väga oluline, kuna aitab leida arendamist vajavad valdkonnad. Läbi viidi erinevaid meetodeid, hindamaks ettevõtte seisundit. Ettevõttel on väga palju positiivseid külgi, samas on ka nõrku külgi, mis vajavad tähelepanu. Positiivse küljena toob autor välja isikliku tehnika olemasolu, kuna on võimalus teha sööta enda loomadele ning pakkuda siloteenust. Negatiivseks küljeks on väike piimatoodang lehma kohta, mis jääb Eesti keskmisele alla. Praeguse piimahinna juures ei soovita autor piimakarja suurendada, küll aga näeb sellest põhjust olukorra paranedes, kuna see annab võimaluse toodangut suurendada ja rohkem müüa.This bachelor’s thesis addresses a strategic analysis of a milk producing company. The current situation in dairy farming is really bad, as the price of milk is low and it puts businesses in a difficult position. The purpose of the thesis is to draw up a strategic analysis of Muraka Farm Ltd to evaluate the company’s financial condition and performance, to find opportunities for effective production systems, and to identify and analyse its key competitors. Also, to find out the strengths and weaknesses of the company, draw some conclusions, and to provide suggestions for improving its business efficiency. Muraka Farm Ltd has not been so thoroughly analysed before. The quantitative analysis of the thesis examines the figures of the annual reports of the company. The qualitative analysis consists of an interview with the managing director. The strategic analysis of the company appears to be highly significant, as it helps to find out which directions should be developed. Different methods were used during the evaluation process. It appeared that the company has a lot of positive attributes. On the other hand, there are some weaknesses that need to be dealt with. The positive characteristic is that the company has its own production machinery. It is possible to provide forage to the company’s cattle and offer a service of silage making to other businesses. In addition, the company has land property, so it does not have to spend its finances on rent. The biggest drawback is that the cows of Muraka Farm Ldt produce 2,000 kg less milk per cow, compared with the average milk yield per cow in Estonia. Therefore, the author of the thesis suggests investing in buildings 4 and machinery, which would provide better conditions for the cattle and improve the productivity of the company. It is not recommended to enlarge dairy cattle at current prices for milk. The author of the thesis suggests waiting until the lowest point in dairy farming has passed and the economic conditions have improved

In the world, products and service providers are becoming more and more competitive. Quality is a key factor in both selling the service and shaping the company's reputation. It is necessary to create a well-functioning quality management system, find competent employees and suitable partners to work with. The research object is a small company named Amello Raamatupidamisteenused OÜ, which considers this topic to be important, as the company has previously not studied or consciously implemented the quality management system. The aim of the Master's thesis is to analyze the implementation of the quality management system in Amello Raamatupidamisteenused OÜ and to highlight the areas needed to improve on the basis of analysis. The author held semi-structured interviews with the chief executive officer and the software leading specialist of the company as a research method and conducted document analysis. The analysis showed that the quality management system is not systematically documented in the company, but the activities are structured and in place. A set of rules, principles and a description of processes have been developed. ISO compliance occurred, but not as detailed as ISO requires. Major deficiencies occurred in the documentation, which included outdated information. As corrective measures, the review of the documentation, their supplementation and the addition of the missing documentation were introduced. In addition, it is recommended to carry out regular customer and staff satisfaction surveys in order to take into account the changing needs of time

The Iambic Muse: Gerty’s Metaformations in Ulysses 13

    No full text
This article on Ulysses 13 argues that Gerty’s fetishized feet and lame leg function as verbal, visual, and aural symbols that guide the readers through an intertextextual labyrinth. It shows that the Nausicaa episode does not just re-enact the mythic Homeric encounter between a foreign man and an unguarded girl on the beach of Phaeacia, but alludes simultaneously and repeatedly to other versions — classical and modern of the original erotic-elegiac encounter. The author contends that Gerty MacDowell, like the scriptae puellae of Latin elegy and Ovid in particular, is a textual- object fabricated by the artist-lover. She is Bloom’s flawed erotic masterpiece
