Autorrepresentación en la obra de Torrente Ballester

    No full text
On the occasion of the centenary of the birth of Gonzalo Torrente Ballester (1910-1999), this article explores his permanent search for new forms of literary self-representation. Throughout his career, the concern to capture life through fiction led Torrente away from the traditional paths of realism, to radical new conceptions of literary representation based on authenticity and subjectivity (as developed in Don Juan and Dafne y ensueños). His increasing irrationalism resulted in an effort to re-think the limits of verisimilitude and the persuasive power of words. These experiments with truth and fiction are analysed as they appear in several of Torrente writings, especially Yo no soy yo, evidentemente, a parodical homage to Fernando Pessoa.

Optimal Vaccination in a SIRS Epidemic Model

Federico S, Ferrari G, Torrente M-L. Optimal Vaccination in a SIRS Epidemic Model. Center for Mathematical Economics Working Papers. Vol 667. Bielefeld: Center for Mathematical Economics; 2022.We propose and solve an optimal vaccination problem within a deterministic compart-mental model of SIRS type: the immunized population can become susceptible again, e.g. because of a not complete immunization power of the vaccine. A social planner thus aims at reducing the number of susceptible individuals via a vaccination campaign, while minimizing the social and economic costs related to the infectious disease. As a theoretical contribution, we provide a technical non-smooth verification theorem, guaranteeing that a semiconcave viscosity solution to the Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation identifies with the minimal cost function, provided that the colosed-loop equation admits a solution. Coditions under which the closed-loop equation is well-posed are then derived by borrowing results from the theory of Regular Lagrangian Flows. From the applied point of view, we provide a numerical implementation of the model in a case study with quadrativ instantaneous costs. Amongst other conclusions, we observe that in the long-run the optimal vaccination policy is able to keep the percentage of infected to zero, at least when the natural reproduction number and the reinfection rate are small.MSC2010 subject classification: 93C15, 49K15, 49L25, 92D3

Irreversible reinsurance: minimization of capital injections in presence of a fixed cost

    No full text
We propose a model in which, in exchange to the payment of a fixed transaction cost, an insurance company can choose the retention level as well as the time at which subscribing a perpetual reinsurance contract. The surplus process of the insurance company evolves according to the diffusive approximation of the Cram & eacute;r-Lundberg model, claims arrive at a fixed constant rate, and the distribution of their sizes is general. Furthermore, we do not specify any particular functional form of the retention level. The aim of the company is to take actions in order to minimize the sum of the expected value of the total discounted flow of capital injections needed to avoid bankruptcy and of the fixed activation cost of the reinsurance contract. We provide an explicit solution to this problem, which involves the resolution of a static nonlinear optimization problem and of an optimal stopping problem for a reflected diffusion. We then illustrate the theoretical results in the case of proportional and excess-of-loss reinsurance, by providing a numerical study of the dependency of the optimal solution with respect to the model's parameters

Severe Respiratory and Skeletal Muscles Involvement in a Carrier of Dysferlinopathy With Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease

    No full text
The natural course of progressive neuromuscular diseases can be complicated by respiratory muscle involvement. In muscular dystrophies such as Duchenne muscular dystrophy and myotonic dystrophy, respiratory muscle involvement is common. In others such as Becker, limb-girdle, and facioscapulo-humeral dystrophies, respiratory muscle involvement is infrequent and generally occurs in the more severe cases. Recently, it was reported that a mutation in the dysferlin gene and/or dysferlin deficiency causes proximal and distal forms of muscular dystrophy, which are known by the term dysferlinopathy. We describe a case of severe weakness of both limb-girdle and respiratory muscles in a patient who was carrier of the dysferlin gene mutation and who also had COPD. We suggest that the systemic inflammatory response of COPD and the dysferlin deficit interact and are responsible for both the skeletal and respiratory muscle impairment

    No full text
