    Metamaterial-based Toraldo pupils for super-resolution at millimetre wavelengths

    Using the long-established Cardiff metal-mesh filter technology, we have exploited our ability to artificially manipulate the phase of a wavefront across a device in order to produce a dielectric-based Toraldo pupil working at millimeter wavelengths. The use of a Toraldo pupil to push the angular resolution of an optical imaging system beyond the classical diffraction limit is yet to be realized in the millimeter regime, but is an exciting prospect.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    In questo capitolo si presenta il caso di un produttore di cravatte artigianali che è stato in grado di valo-rizzare la storia e il background di partenza, e se ne evidenziano le implicazioni principali, sottolineando l’importanza della memoria come asset strategico per la formazione di un’identità organizzativa. Questo capitolo si concentra dunque su un produttore artigianale di cravatte localizzato nella città di Napoli: E. Marinella. Il caso è stato scelto in quanto rappresenta ai nostri occhi un esempio virtuoso di valorizzazione della tradizione locale e della propria storia aziendale. Grazie alla valorizzazione della propria tradizione E. Marinella è riuscita infatti a posizionarsi come un marchio di lusso, apprezzato per la manifattura artigianale e l’unicità della propria collezione

    Prolonged grief in caregivers of community-dwelling dementia patients

    Objectives: To estimate the frequency of prolonged grief disorder (PGD) in 90 primary caregivers of patients with dementia who live in the community dwelling in Milan and to identify the relationship between grief intensity (GI) and other caregiver variables; another aim was to clarify the role of the objective cognitive and functional impairment of the patients and the level of deterioration perceived by caregivers. Design: Cross-sectional study. Results: In all, 16.7% of caregivers had PGD. Caregiver variables increasing GI and the risk of developing PGD were burden, anxiety, and some sociodemographic features. The objective level of patient’s deterioration was irrelevant for PGD probability/GI, while the deterioration level perceived by the caregiver increased PGD probability and GI. Conclusions: Caregivers of patients with dementia may experience grief symptoms that are associated with low educational level, high level of burden and anxiety, and high perceived deterioration of their demented relatives’ cognitive and functional abilities

    The space-time distribution of coseismic slip of the 21 February 2011, Mw 6.2, Christchurch earthquake, New Zealand, is explored, differently from all previous studies, through a joint inversion of geodetic and strong-motion data. The geodetic data consist of both Global Position System (GPS), from campaign and continuous stations, and Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) interferograms from two ascending satellite tracks. The strong motion data consist of 10 stations located in the Canterbury plains, these stations offering a good azimuthal coverage of the event. The kinematic rupture model for the analyzed event was obtained using the parameterization and nonlinear inversion scheme proposed by Delouis et al. (2002). In particular, for any subfault we explore for the local source time function (local slip history), slip direction, and rupture onset time. The geometry of the fault plane used for the kinematic inversion is inferred from the analysis of the geodetic data. To validate our results we perform a resolution study for both the single and complete data sets, and an errors analysis of our final kinematic rupture model. Considering the complexity highlighted by superficial deformation data, we adopted a fault model consisting of two partially overlapping segments, with dimensions 15x11 and 7x7 km2, corresponding to different faulting types. This two-fault model, instead of single fault model, is needed to reconstruct the complex shape of the superficial deformation data. The total seismic moment resulting from the joint inversion is 3.0x1025 dyne.cm (Mw = 6.2) with an average rupture velocity of 2.0 km/s
