    A description of interdecadal time-scale propagating North Atlantic sea surface temperature anomalies and their effect on winter European climate, 1948-2002

    Eastward-propagating interdecadal time-scale sea surface temperature (SST) winter anomalies have been shown to exist at the North Atlantic subpolar/subtropical gyre boundary. Heat flux and surface air temperature signatures of these anomalies are investigated using satellite- and ship-based SST observations and atmospheric reanalysis. Using bandpass filter analysis, retaining periods between 9 and 25 yr, a succession of coherent propagating SST anomalies is identified. The size, speed, propagation path, and decay characteristics of propagating anomalies detected during the period 1948–2002 are documented. The behavior of the propagations changes between the periods 1948–70 and 1970–2002. In the former period, SST anomalies propagated from the east coast of North America to the British Isles in 10 yr. The anomalies displayed a well-defined life cycle, growing in the western basin (west of 40°W) and decaying in the eastern basin. During the period 1970–2002, SST anomalies did not propagate deep into the eastern basin, but grew in the western basin and then ceased propagating. Oceanic anomalies have a comparable marked signature in surface sensible and latent heat fluxes and in surface air temperature. Winter surface heat flux anomalies act to amplify SST anomalies during the middle of their lifetimes, normally in the west-central Atlantic. At other times, heat flux anomalies are associated with decay of anomalies. Surface heat fluxes do not always act to cause propagation, and it is likely that other processes such as advection play a role in the propagation mechanism. North European winter surface air temperatures are raised or lowered by up to ±0.5°C over decadal time scales (1/3 of the total variation over the United Kingdom) when an SST anomaly reaches the eastern boundary. A variety of processes can cause SST variation on decadal time scales at the eastern boundary, but in the 1950s and 1960s the variability at these periods was the signature of features that had propagated across the Atlantic from the North American coast

    Eastward propagating surface anomalies at ocean gyre boundaries

    Inspection of animations and time-distance (Hovmoller) plots of unfiltered data from a state-of-the-art coupled climate model (HadCM3) reveals eastward propagating surface temperature-salinity anomalies at subpolar/subtropical gyre boundaries throughout the world ocean. Maximum anomalies are 4C and 0.3 practical salinity units. Horizontal length scales are 1000 km. The anomalies travel at a speed consistent with advection by mean near-surface currents. Generation regions are located at western boundaries and possess an order of magnitude higher variability than all other regions. In some cases, surface heat fluxes are shown to cause anomaly generation; in other cases, surface current anomalies are likely to be responsible. Eastward anomaly propagation also occurs in the Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean model. The coarser resolution Fast Ocean Rapid Troposphere Experiment (FORTE) coupled model shows no propagating anomalies. Sea surface anomalies in the instrumental record are investigated, using ship-based sea surface temperature (SST) and heat fluxes, and satellite SST and altimetry. Unlike the models, Hovmoller plots and animations of the unfiltered observational data showed no evidence of eastward propagation. By applying a decadal-timescale band-pass filter to the SST time series, we identify underlying propagation of basin-scale anomalies in both HadCM3 and observations. Maximum anomalies are 1C and length scales are 2500 km. These anomalies travel at speeds significantly slower than mean near-surface currents. Ten anomalies are identified during the period 1870–2002, mostly in the eastern Atlantic basin (east of 45W). HadCM3 displayed only one propagating anomaly of this type in a typical 100 years of data. We discuss possible reasons for the range of results in models and observations

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
