REACTIONS OF LASER ABLATED Ti, Zr AND Hf ATOMS WITH ACETYLENE: INFRARED SPECTRA OF THE PRODUCTS OF METAL INSERTION INTO THE C-H BOND

    No full text
Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of VirginiaThe reactions of laser ablated Group IV metal atoms with acetylene in excess argon have been studied using the matrix isolation infrared spectroscopic technique. The infrared spectra of the argon matrices (6-7 K) that result from the codeposition of the laser ablated metal atoms with C2H2/ArC_{2}H_{2}/Ar mixtures provide evidence for the presence of several new product species that arise from the metal atom activation of the acetylene C-H bond. These new species will be identified by their infrared spectra and the effects of 13C^{13}C and D isotopic substitution in the precursor C2H2C_{2}H_{2} molecule

Investigation of the interaction between corticomuscular coherence, motor precision and perceived difficulty in wrist flexion and extension

Includes abstract.Includes bibliographical references.Recently, behavioural (motor precision) differences were reported between isometric wrist flexion and extension. Neurophysiological as well as clinical differences have also been reported between these antagonistic movements. Corticomuscular coherence (CMC), i.e. the frequency specific temporal coupling between the electroencephalogram (EEG) and electromyogram (EMG) recorded during isometric force production, reflects the functional connectivity between cortex and muscle. A single muscle (flexor digitorum superficialis) study suggests a positive correlation between 15-35 Hz (beta) CMC and motor precision of the muscle. Yet, no study has simultaneously compared CMC and motor precision between wrist flexion and extension. Task perceived difficulty, which is a perceptual variable, may influence both motor precision and CMC, but has not been studied yet. The main aim of the present study was to investigate the interaction between CMC, motor precision and perceived difficulty in isometric wrist flexion and extension tasks

MATRIX INFRARED SPECTRUM AND BONDING IN THE MONOCHLOROMETHYL RADICAL

Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of VirginiaSimultaneous deposition of CH2ClXCH_{2}ClX (X = F, Cl, Br, I) with atomic lithium or sodium at high dilution in argon on a CsI window maintained at 15K15^\circ K has produced the monochloromethyl free radical for infrared spectroscopic study. Vibrational assignments to ν2\nu_{2} (the symmetric C-Cl stretch), ν3\nu_{3} (the symmetric valance angle bend) and νc\nu_{c} (the out of plane hydrogen bend) are supported by the reactions of lithium with CHDCl2CHDCl_{2} and lithium or sodium with CD2Cl2CD_{2} Cl_{2}. These assignments are further substantiated by normal coordinate calculations. The unusually high C-Cl force constant in CH2ClCH_{2}Cl (4.09=0.03 mdyn/\AA) indicates considerable stabilization of the C-Cl bond. Therefore, we suggest (p-p)π\pi bonding in CH2ClCH_{2}Cl. The average calculated FαF\alpha does not quantitatively account for the observed isotopic frequencies of v6v_{6}. However, a simple harmonicquartic potential function obtained from first order perturbation theory (V(O) = (1/2(1.83) (Δ\Delta(O)2+(10.7)(Δ^{2}+ (10.7) (\DeltaO)4^{4})×1013\times 10^{-13} ergs) accurately determines the observed spectrum: this large positive quartic term is evidence for a planar radical

1^{1} A. D. McLachlan and L. C. Snyder, J. Chem. Phys. 36, 1159 (1962).Author Institution: Department of Chemistry, University of VirginiaThe conformation and electronic structure of cyclooctatetraene (COT) and its anions have been of interest for many years. COT has a nonplanar tub structure (D2dD_{2}d) and is nonaromatic. The dianion (COT2COT^{2-}) is almost certainly planar, aromatic, and of D8hD_{8h} symmetry. The situation is less clear with respect to the monoanion (COT)(COT^{-}). We have measured the magnetic circular dichrosim (MCD) of COT isolated in Ar matrices by codepositing COT and alkali metal atoms. Bands are observed at about 340 and 300 nm. The former shows a remarkably well resolved series of vibronic A terms. The MCD is temperature independent, strongly supporting the view*** that the ground state structure of COTCOT^{-} is consistent with an orbitally degenerate planar configuration subject to a dynamic Jahn-Teller Effect in the b1gb_{1_{g}} in-plane C-C stretching vibration. The lack of MCD temperature dependence allows us to place a lower limit on the strength of the Jahn-Teller coupling

Characterization and structure in the development of Tudor comedy

The role of characterization in dramatic structure is assessed by theoretical criteria. Characters who perform actions necessary for the completion of the narrative sequence are said to be "bound" to the narrative; those without such obligations are "free". Characters who maintain a single, constant meaning during the course of a play are said to be "static"; characters who change or develop into new roles are "dynamic". Horatian decorum demanded that comic characters be static, and the characters of Plautine and Terentian tradition were almost always bound to narrative intrigue. However, evaluations of six Tudor comedies show an increasing use of non-classical characterization within the comic form. In the early comedies lohan lohan and Roister Doister all characters are bound and static, yet the impetus to enlarge the role of characterization is evident. The characters of lohan lohan are expanded from their French source, and Roister Doister includes extraneous episodes in which Udall displays his braggart hero. Free characters abound in Misogonus; as well the play brings dynamic characterization into the scope of comedy with the conversion of its prodigal son. Free characters offer new possibilities of non-narrative plotting. In comedies of the 1580s favourite traditional characters appear as diversions outside the action, and thematic arrangements of characters inform the increasingly complex plots. Lyly stresses the symbolic potential of characters in Endimion, whereas Greene uses dynamic characterization to heighten the illusion of independent figures in Friar Bacon and Friar Bungay. Love's Labour's Lost exposes the limitations of comic artifice by pulling the characters between convention and individualization. By the end of the sixteenth century free and dynamic characters had become common, and characterization had established a sizable claim on the design of English comedy. These developments set the English form apart from its neoclassical counterparts

Managing pollution control in Brazil : the potential use of taxes and fines by federal and state governments

    No full text
The authors make a case for federal monitoring of state environmental agencies'(SEPAs') performance because of the tradeoff for the states between the need to raise revenue from taxes on local output and the need to limit pollution. They also show that fines and taxes assigned respectively to the federal and state governments can improve firms'compliance and SEPA's performance, and hence environmental quality, without damaging state revenue, and perhaps even improving it. For their analysis, the authors rely on numerical policy simulations based on an analytical framework designed as a multilevel Stackelberg game. This framework reproduces the hierarchical structure of pollution control policies in Brazil, where the federal environmental protection agency relies on SEPAs to ensure that federally defined minimum ambient standards are met locally. The numerical simulations are based on a case study of the food, and the printing and publishing industries.Urban Services to the Poor,Environmental Economics&Policies,Water and Industry,Pollution Management&Control,Health Monitoring&Evaluation
