Introduction to Reactive and Functional Polymers: A Note From the Editor

    No full text
Reactive and functional polymers are manufactured essentially from the chemical or physical modification of their precursors or by the addition of active fillers. These polymers have proven important for the development of advanced materials for different applications, and they are booming and will be a fundamental part in the future life for agricultural, energy efficiency, environmental remediation, medical devices, among others. With this chapter, we open the main topics that will be analyzed in this book.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Food Manufacturing for Babies and Children: Editor’s Perspective

    No full text
Child feeding has been the focus of attention for various international, national and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the most important of which is the United Nations International Children´s Emergency Fund (UNICEF). In this sense, some efforts for the development of infant foods have been conducted to improve the nutritional quality of this susceptible demographic population. Future perspectives on food development in terms of food science, technology and nutrition for babies and children will be given in this first chapter as an introduction to this book.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. Trends in polymers for agri-food applications: A note from the editor

    No full text
An expanding world population and a planet limited in natural resources are two of the main reasons that have propelled the development of scientific and technological solutions that enable the efficient, sustainable, and massive production of food and its subsequent preservation. In this regard, natural and synthetic polymers have found a place in agri-industry. In this first chapter, we introduce the main polymeric systems and their potential applications in agri-industrial processes.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. Surfaces, Interfaces and Recycling from Reactive and Functional Polymers: Editor’s Insights

    No full text
Surface modifications and reactions on polymer systems have achievedto improve their performance as reactive and functional materials, compatibility ofpolymer blends, among others. Likewise, there is a great interest in the reduction ofplastic waste or its reuse. This has been more recently addressed by reactive polymerprocessing or the use of reactive and functional polymers per se with the aim ofreducing pollution from conventional petroleum-derived polymers. With this chapter,we open these main topics that will be analyzed in this volume.Fil: Gutiérrez Carmona, Tomy José. Consejo Nacional de Investigaciones Científicas y Técnicas. Composite foams made from biodegradable polymers for food packaging applications

Polymeric foams are cell structures (porous microstructures) that have been frequently made from synthetic polymers for use in the development of food packaging. Due to the problems concerning the environmental impact caused by polymers from the petrochemical industry, the foams have been more recently studied from biodegradable polymers. However, the polymer materials obtained are usually susceptible to moisture, thus conditioning the collapse of the porous structure of the material. As an alternative, the composite foams have been investigated from nanofillers such as clays, cellulose, nanoparticles, among others. This chapter aims to analyze the recent advances in the studies of composite foams.Fil: Araque Moreno, Luis Miguel. Federal University Of Piauí; BrasilFil: Alvarez, Vera Alejandra. Učinkovitost turizma, zasnovanega na lokalni skupnosti, pri spodbujanju odgovornega turizma v Kerali

Prispevek ponuja celovit pregled skupnostnih turističnih pobud v Kumarakomu v Kerali v Indiji. The paper provides a comprehensive overview of community-based tourism (CBT) initiatives in Kumarakom, Kerala, India. It includes interviews with government officials, stakeholders and community members, as well as questionnaires aimed at assessing the awareness and potential of community-based tourism. The key themes highlighted in the document revolve around the importance of community involvement, economic benefits, environmental preservation, and the role of government support in promoting sustainable development through tourism. The study used a mixed-method approach including a survey of 200 respondents and in-depth interviews with government officials, stakeholders and community members. Most respondents agreed or strongly agreed that CBT has had a positive impact on local livelihoods in Kumarakom. There were mixed opinions on how well CBT can balance economic benefits and environmental preservation. A significant portion of respondents disagreed or strongly disagreed that this balance is being achieved. In summary, the study found generally positive perceptions of the impacts of CBT, but also highlighted areas for improvement, particularly in balancing economic and environmental considerations and ensuring broad-based community engagement and collaboration
