THE MILITARY IN VIETNAM'S FEUDAL SOCIETY: A STUDY OF THE LOCAL MILITIA UNDER THE NGUYỄN DYNASTY’S POLICY OF "LODGING SOLDIERS AMONG FARMERS" (1802-1885)
This paper focuses on clarifying the role of local militia, a crucial force in the policy of “lodging soldiers among farmers” under the Nguyen Dynasty. To elucidate this issue, the author employs two primary research methods
in history: historical and logical approaches. The historical method aids in reconstructing the historical picture as objectively as possible, while the logical method facilitates the author in making assessments and evaluations of
the objective laws governing the research problem. The research materials used by the author are valuable primary sources from the Nguyen Dynasty that have been preserved to this day. Additionally, the author leverages the research of other scholars to clarify the raised issues. Through this, the paper will clarify specific issues as follows: First, the author will provide a general overview of the local militia under the Nguyen Dynasty; Second, the paper will elucidate the contributions of the local militia under the Nguyen Dynasty; Third, the paper
will evaluate the role of the local militia in the “lodging soldiers among farmers” policy of the Nguyen Dynasty (1802-1885). The results of this study will serve as a valuable source for clarifying the human resource management of the Nguyen feudal dynasty (1802-1885). Moreover, it is essential material for those interested

Predictors of CEO career success in a transition economy – evidence from Vietnam
Reasons for the study. This thesis was motivated by the controversial associations which reflect the characteristics of career success stipulated by numerous sets of predictors, whereby career success may be evaluated either subjectively and objectively, or by a combination of the two aspects. Originating from recommendations made by influencial scholars, a customised set of moderators was selected to investigate the associations. Moreover, the author has established a population in a novel context, focusing on chief executive officers (CEOs) of listed firms in a Southeast Asian transition economy. All of these factors facilitated the testing of hypotheses partly developed from related theories, namely, psychological success model, human capital theory, political skill framework, five-factor model of personality, protean career theory, managerial power theory and Judge et al.’s (1995) model.Purpose. The research aimed to empirically examine the controversial associations characterised by the relationships between the sets of predictors and two popular aspects of career success, as well as between these aspects themselves. The research covered the important sets of predictors, namely, human capital, political skill, protean career orientation, managerial power and objective-vs-subjective career success. Additionally, the study investigated the various effects of moderators on the important relationships, which included the effects of firm size and ownership structure on political skill - career success and protean career orientation-career success, as well as the effect of the employment sector on personality traits - career success relationships.Design/methodology/approach. The study design employed the correlational research approach and the cross-sectional survey method, while the database was constructed from two main sources: the quota sampling survey of the 179 CEOs of the 179 firms publicly listed in the two stock exchange markets in Vietnam, and the archival hand-collected data extracted from the Vietnamese General Department of Taxation, gleaned from annual reports, boards’ reports, financial reports and websites of the 179 firms, as well from trustworthy websites, namely, www.cafef.vn and www.finance.vietstock.vn. The SPSS Statistics 22 program was employed for carrying out data-preparation-and-screening, in order to justify the erroneous-and-missing data, the outliers, the common method variance, the sample size, to calibrate the assumptions, to validate the unidimensionality and reliability, as well as to confirm the validity. Moreover, the Mplus 7.0 program was utilised for conducting the structural equation modelling (SEM) in order to evaluate the direct relationships. The program was also employed to carry out the latent moderated structural equation analysis to determine the latent variable interactions. This program was beneficial in providing the multi-group SEM analysis for reflecting an interaction between a continuous predictor and a dichotomous moderator.Findings. Particularly interesting were the findings that the measure of objective career success was positively associated with the two measures pertaining to the subjective one. Another finding was that human capital, political skill, protean career orientation and managerial power sets of predictors resulted in a highly reliable characterisation of career success, where it was suggested that the variables leading to objective career success were not different from those linked to subjective career success. Additionally, the results partly confirmed that there were slight moderating effects of firm size and ownership structure on the political skill - career success relationship and on the protean career orientation – career success relationship, and of the employment sector on the personality traits – career success relationship. As a result, contextual factors, namely, firm size, ownership structure and the employment sector, may play a crucial role in the relationships between career success and its related predictors.Originality/value. In addition to extending the original work of Judge et al. (1995), this study makes original contributions to the field of career success research by not only testing existing theories, but also by building new theories. The study has grounded predictions with the relevant existing theories, conceptual arguments and references to past findings. Further, this study has examined a previously unexplored relationship between CEO managerial power and his career success. Additionally, the study has introduced, as well as empirically tested, the three new moderators of existing relationships, including firm size, employment sector and ownership structure. In addition, this study have constructed a holistic and novel context for demonstrating how to characterise transitional economies in South East Asia, where our novel approach invoking multiple disciplines has been applied
A generalization approach for the kinematic modelling of the rotational axes of five-axis CNC centers
In practice, the inverse kinematic modelling and analysis of a five-axis CNC center is of importance when transferring and postprocessing a cutter location (CL) data file for machining part surfaces of complex geometry. Decades ago, though there has been a number of investigations focusing on the kinematic modelling and postprocessor development for five-axis CNC centers, a little attention has been paid to the generalization of the inverse kinematic modelling for the rotational axes of five-axis CNC centers. In this paper, a new and general analytical approach for deriving effectively the inverse kinematic equation of two rotational axes of any five-axis CNC center is proposed. It has shown that the proposed technique is very useful for the postprocessor development of any five-axis CNC center

Assessment of coastal inundation triggered by multiple drivers in Ca Mau Peninsula, Vietnam
The Ca Mau Peninsula (CMP) plays a critical role in the agricultural and aquaculture productivity of the Vietnamese Mekong Delta (VMD), central to regional food security as well as the population's economic and social welfare. Unfortunately, the region faces persistent flood risks from seasonal Mekong flows and high tides. Climate change is expected to worsen these threats through sea level rise, extreme rainfall, and more frequent storm surges, while, human-induced factors such as land subsidence and riverbed lowering can further complicate the situation. Quantification of potential hazards associated with these drivers is therefore essential for shaping the future sustainability for the region and its ability to adapt to both current and forthcoming changes. In this study, we assess the impact of compounding hazards by developing regional inundation maps and analysing flood dynamics in the CMP using a large-scale hydrodynamic model encompassing the entire VMD. The model was enhanced with updated bathymetric data for major river channels, along with synchronized information on the dyke across the VMD from the 2018–2019 period, resulting in a substantial performance improvement. It was then applied across multiple future scenarios based on both individual drivers and their combinations, representing a wide but plausible range of anthropogenic and climate changes. Our findings show that upstream high flows, riverbed lowering, and occurrences of storm surges affecting the mainstream Mekong River have limited impact on regional inundation dynamics. However, land subsidence, rising sea levels, and their combined effects emerge as the primary drivers behind the escalation in both extent and intensity of the regional inundations in the future. These results, hence, are expected to serve as vital groundwork for strategic development and investment as well as for emergency decision-making and flood management planning, providing essential insights for shaping development policies and devising investment strategies related to infrastructure systems in this rapidly developing area
A conceptual digital twin for cost-effective development of a welding robotic system for smart manufacturing
With rapid technology advancements and impacts of digital trans-formation technologies, there have been a lot of efforts in recent years at the global and national scope to develop technology eco-systems moving toward Industry 4.0. There has also been a growing number of studies about optimization of process parameters based on AI, IoT and Bigdata analytics, including CNC machining, additive manufacturing, as well as industrial welding with robots, for development of Smart Manufacturing (SM), which is one of the key elements of Industry 4.0. However, there are challenges to fully develop and apply in industrial practices the ideal SM models in the next 5 to 10 years. It is necessary to develop the cost-effective SM models that are easy to understand with a high level of applicability in practice and adoptability for SMEs. In this paper, a conceptual digital twin is proposed, with the focus on cost-effective design and development of a welding robotic system for smart manufacturing

Metacognitive skills consist of knowledge and regulation metacognition. This study was conducted to investigate the metacognition of undergraduate students and its correlation with students’ academic performance. Methods: The metacognitive skills inventory comprised 52 binary-scale items administered to 202 Vietnam Military Medical University medical students. The entire semester and clinical results were used to measure their academic performance. Results: Medical students’ total metacognitive awareness score was high (median 0.8). The median metacognitive knowledge score was significantly lower than the metacognitive regulation score (0.7 vs 0.8, respectively). The participants with a total metacognition score ≥ 0.8 had significantly higher academic results (full semester exam results of 7.4 and clinical exam of 7.5). The group of participants in the military, having sports habits and usually searching academic documents in English, had a higher proportion of total metacognitive awareness score ≥ 0.8 than the group without these above characteristics (with the percentages of 53.3%, 59%, and 64.3%, respectively; p < 0.05). The number of books read by participants with a total metacognitive awareness score ≥ 0.8 was significantly higher than those with a total metacognitive awareness score < 0.8 (3.5 compared to 2.4 books). Conclusion: Metacognitive awareness of Vietnam Military Medical University medical students was likely to be high. A high score of metacognitive awareness could predict high academic performance. Being a military student, playing sports, reading books, and searching English documents were predictors of better metacognitive awareness. Keywords: metacognition, medical student, metacognitive awareness, academic performanc
