Managing the possible health risks of mobile telecommunications: Public understandings of precautionary action and advice
No full textIt has been suggested that precautionary approaches to managing possible health risks mobile telecommunications (MT) technology may cause or exacerbate public concerns. In contrast, precautionary approaches to managing such risks in the UK have been framed as a way of reducing public concerns. This article presents evidence from a series of focus groups about publics’ understandings of the actions taken and advice given about potential MT health risks by the UK government. Eight focus groups were conducted with members of the public that varied in their age, their awareness and concern about mast siting, and the self-reported level of mobile phone use. From the analyses a complex picture emerged in which publics’ understandings were not primarily framed in terms of precautionary action and advice either provoking concern or providing reassurance. People made sense of precaution by drawing upon a range of evidence from their understandings of costs and benefits of the technology, as well as the institutional context in which MT health risks were managed. For some of those involved in protesting against mast siting, precaution was seen as confirming existing concern. Further systematic exploration of the contexts within which different responses to precaution emerge is thus likely to be instructive.Mobile Telecommunications Health Research Programme
Polarization-insensitive directional couplers based on SOI wire waveguides
No full textOptical directional couplers based on SOI-wire waveguides have been modelled by a semi-analytical approach based on the Coupled Mode Theory and Finite Element Method. The modelling is used to obtain analytically optical power at the parallel and cross ports by utilizing numerically calculated coupling coefficients. Geometrical dimensions of the couplers have been optimized to obtain a polarization-independent behaviour. The influence of non-vertical sidewalls on the coupler performance has also been addressed
Design rules for single-mode and polarization-independent silicon-on-insulator rib waveguides using stress engineering
No full textThere is a trend towards miniaturization of silicon photonic circuits due to superior performance and small cost. Design rules that must be imposed on the geometry of optical waveguides to make them behave as polarization-independent and singlemode devices are well known for waveguides with relatively large cross sections and for some small cross-sectional rib waveguides with vertical sidewalls and an air top cladding. The influence of the top oxide cover on waveguide birefringence was analyzed recently, but only for relatively large cross-sectional waveguides. This paper reports simulations for both single-mode and polarization-independent behavior for small cross-sectional waveguides with variable rib width, etch depth, top oxide cover thickness, and sidewall angle. The results show that the stress-induced effects must be taken into account to satisfy both requirements. Design rules to maintain birefringence-free operation and to satisfy single-mode behavior for small rib silicon-on-insulator (SOI) waveguides are presented

Branislav Nusic. This paper presents the life and work of Branislav Nusic,
as well as his article: ?Roentgen?s Photography? which was published in the
journal ?Politics? (July 8, 1906; N? 892, p. 3), under the alias Ben Akiba,
in the Cyrillic script. The life and work of Branislav Nusic. Alchiviadi
Nu?a, later Branislav Nusic (1864 - 1938) was a great Serbian literate,
playwright, journalist, photographer, politician, diplomat, member of the
Serbian Royal Academy, President of the Association of Yugoslav Playwrights,
manager of the theaters in Belgrade, Novi Sad, Skopje and Sarajevo, and a
military volunteer in the Serbian - Bulgarian war (1885). ?Roentgen?s
Photography?. The author wrote this text in his own way, the only way he
could and knew, vividly and wittily. He knew about the great power and
strength of X-ray radiation, and he wrote of his knowledge in this short
story. Without Branislav Nusic, the history of Serbian radiology would be
poorer for not seeing the X-rays by the eyes of an educated, intelligent
and, above all, humorous writer. Conclusion. Branislav Nusic, alongside
Nikola Tesla, Mihajlo Pupin Idvorski, Dr. Abraham Vinaver, and all past and
present Serbian radiologists, has become an essential and memorable link in
the chain of the history of the Serbian radiology.</jats:p

Hedging Behaviour of Czech Exporting Firms
No full textThe hedging behaviour of Czech exporting firms is analysed using questionnaire information and interviews with banks. Approximately 60% of the 184 firms surveyed hedge their FX exposures, and about 88% of their exports are hedged. Most exporters use natural hedging, i.e. they balance incoming and outgoing payments in foreign currency as well as foreign currency assets and liabilities. Hedgers on financial markets prefer forwards and zero-cost option structures, as they are reluctant to pay option premiums. The typical maturity of financial instruments is three months to one year. More than one half of exporters hedge consistently, while around 60% hedge actively, taking advantage of currency moves. Our simple model of hedging behaviour for example suggests that trading within a group reduces the need for hedging.Exchange rate exposure, exchange rate risk, exports, hedging behaviour.
