Resolving Inner Cultural Conflicts toward Education in Pastoral East Africa: A Grounded Theory Study

    No full text
The purpose of this grounded theory study was to explain the perceptions of semi - nomadic pastoralists in East Africa, who self - identified as having the characteristics of the most vulnerable, and who were educationally successful. This study identified motivating factors that contributed to resiliency while in the pursuit of an education. Findings suggest that even though students from this background utilize these motivating factors they are still faced with inner cultural tensions that can be insurmountable. Emergent theory suggests that inner cultural conflicts toward education are resolved when push/pull factors were combined with a sense of something beyond themselves, allowing for transcultural migratio

Generalized BDF methods applied to Hessenberg form DAEs

    No full text
We study the numerical solution of Hessenberg form differential algebraic equations by variable stepsize generalized backward difference formulae (GBDF). GBDF methods of sufficiently high order are shown to converge for problems of index two, three, or four. The proof techniques developed are not sufficiently powerful to show convergence for index five problems. In addition, we perform very high precision numerical experiments on problems of index two, three, four, and five, using the classical six step backward difference formula. The experiments confirm the analysis regarding the error behavior of the index two and three problems, but suggest that the analysis of the index four problem is too pessimistic. It appears from the experiments that index five problems can also be solved by GBDF methods.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T13:13:05Z (GMT). Racial Identity and its Impact on Job Applicants

    No full text
Drawing from Social Dominance Theory and Prejudice Distribution Theory, the purpose of these three experimental studies was to examine how Whites evaluate racial minorities (African American and Latino) with a strong racial identity. In Study 1, participants evaluated applicants for an athletic director position. Relative to their weakly identified counterparts, applicants believed to possess a strong racial identity were rated as a poorer fit for the job. Results from Study 2, which was also set within the context of hiring an athletic director, show that participant social dominance orientation moderates the relationship between racial identity and subsequent evaluations. Study 3 explored the impact of racial identity on salary and job-related attributes for African American and Latina applicants in the fitness industry as well as gender biases of participants. Study 3 results revealed a relationship between rater gender, applicant race or racial identity and job-related attributes as well as suggested salary. Specifically, strongly identified Latina applicants were rated most negatively by male reviewers in comparison to weakly identified Latina and African American applicants. Interestingly, the inverse was found for female raters. These studies support and extend the current literature as well as highlight the unique way displays of racial identity impact minority applicants in sport and fitness contexts. These findings have both theoretical and practical implications for organizations and minority applicants. The author also discusses limitations and future directions

The Invertebrate Prey of the Northern Leopard Frog, Rana pipiens, in a Northeastern Ohio Population

Author Institution: Department of Biological Sciences, Kent State UniversityThe purpose of this investigation was to determine the feeding habits of the northern leopard frog, Rana pipiens, in northeastern Ohio. To accomplish this we examined the stomach contents of 13 adults and 19 juveniles collected from a restored wetland in Summit County, Ohio during the summers of 1996 and 1997. The adult and juvenile frogs ingested 142 invertebrates representing 2 phyla, 3 classes, 12 orders, and 34 families. Adult and juvenile frogs consumed both diurnal and nocturnal prey belonging primarily to the insect orders Coleoptera, Hemiptera, and Hymenoptera. Although juvenile frogs consumed more individual prey items than adults (t = 2.196, p <0.05), neither age cohort specialized on active or inactive prey (X2 = 3.84, p <0.05)- Approximately 67% of all prey consumed consisted of fossorial or crawling organisms. Our data suggest that R. pipiens is an efficient predator that maximizes prey diversity by employing more than one feeding strategy
