The influence of initial length of uterus per embryo and gestation stage on prenatal survival, development and sex ratio in the pig

    No full text
The effects of initial uterine length per embryo and stage of gestation on embryonic survival, development and sex ratio were determined by systematically restricting embryos to 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 or more than 50 cm of initial uterine length per potential embryo and examining the reproductive tracts at d 17, 23, 29, 35 or 41 of gestation. At d 3 the mean length of a uterine horn was 169 ±\pm 35 cm with a range of 80 to 255 cm. The mean number of corpora lutea (CL) was 12.4 ±\pm 2.34 from both ovaries. Ovulation rate was positively correlated with the length of uterine horns (r =.3769). Prenatal survival rate was highly correlated with initial allotted uterine space from 5 to 25 cm/CL (r =.95, p .1) and when embryos were restricted to 15 cm to above, sex ratio of male to female was 49:51. Stage of gestation had little effect on sex ratio. Male fetuses occupied more uterine space than females in both crowded and roomy sections (p <<.05). At d 41 males were lighter than females in crowded sections (male 10.17 gm, female 11.56 gm) but heavier than females in sections with assigned space greater than 25 cm/CL (male 12.91 gm, female 12.05 gm) (p <<.05).Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T12:33:50Z (GMT). Wczesna dramaturgia Jarosława Iwaszkiewicza na współczesnej scenie. „Kwidama” potyczki teatralne

    No full text
The aim of this sketch is to show the stage potential of Iwaszkiewicz\u27s text and to juxtapose it with the concept of Andrzej Dziuk, the creator of the stage realisation of the text. The play, entitled A Game for Everyone, was staged in 1984 at the Stary Theatre in Kraków. The performance utilised and creatively expanded elements characteristic of theatre: patterns, folk theatre characters, role-play awareness, text-performance. According to the author, Dziuk has aptly followed the tradition and tendency of the drama, and has used its theatrical potential. He has exposed the very aspects of theatricality, of play present in Iwaszkiewicz, taken from the theories of the author\u27s contemporaries and using the experience of folk theatre, nativity plays and mysteries

The effect of modification of mixed function oxidases and inhibition of enterohepatic circulation on concentration of estrogens in plasma in laying hens (Gallus domesticus)

The rate of metabolism and recirculation contributes to the rate of excretion and to concentration in the circulation. Steroids are substrates for mixed function oxidases (MFO). Enterohepatic circulation (EHC) of estrogens prolongs the half life of estrogens. Thus, the amount of recirculation and the extent of inactivation of estrogens by MFO can influence the peripheral concentration of estrogens. The objective of this thesis was to determine the influence of altering MFO by xenobiotics and inhibition of EHC on the peripheral concentration of estrogens and on estrogen dependent functions in laying hens (Gallus domesticus). The first objective was to investigate the extent of EHC on peripheral concentration of estrogen in laying hens. Analysis of bile from hens, showed that more than 95% of estrogen are conjugates indicating that the excretion of estrogen conjugates in the bile and indicates the possibility of EHC of estrogen. Sequestering of free estrogens in the gut by oral charcoal leading to fecal excretion or inhibition of bacterial deconjugating enzymes in the gut by antibiotics would reduce reabsorption and recirculation. Oral antibiotics reduced the concentration of estrone (E1) and estradiol glucuronide in the hepatic portal vein. Hen treated with charcoal also had lower concentration of E1 in the hepatic portal vein, and higher circulating concentration of E2 than control hens. Hens treated with charcoal and antibiotics laid more eggs than control hens. The second objective was to investigate the effect of modification of metabolizing enzymes on the peripheral concentration of estrogens in laying hens. Phenobarbital (PB) increased MFO thereby depressing concentration of E2 and E1 but not estrogen conjugates. Treatment with PB increased MFO, decreased E2 and total blood calcium in a dose dependent manner. Depressing MFO by administration of carbon tetrachloride increased the concentration of E2. The third objective was to examine the hypothesis that a change in estrogen in laying hens might detect reproductive toxicants. Aroclor 1254 (PCBs) and Dichlorodiphenyl-trichloroethane (DDT) are reported to have profound effects on avian reproduction, and both caused depression of circulating E2, whereas benzpyrene has been found not to have an affect on reproduction and did not affect E2. High doses of PCBs and PB not only decreased E2 but also depressed reproductive functions such as egg lay, eggshell thickness and total plasma calcium. These results indicate that effect of diet on reproduction might be due to modification of MFO or inhibition of EHC, and consequent reproduction. It also helped to explain that eggshell thinning and reproductive failure caused by toxicants might be due to change of MFO.Made available in DSpace on 2011-05-07T14:07:27Z (GMT). The issues presented in the article revolve around the premise for the award of the nursing care benefit indicated in the title. Recognizing the multifaceted nature of the title premise, the author of the text explains how it is understood and presents its significance from the point of view of the legal possibilities of granting the benefit. In this context, the author also discusses the premise of not taking up employment or other gainful work as a parallel premise indicated by the legislature. An analysis of the relationship between the two premises proves that, despite the primary importance of the premise of not taking up employment or other gainful work, the premise of giving up employment may also be relevant in assessing the legitimacy of the application for a nursing care benefit. In formulating this thesis, the author relies on an analysis of the current judicial decisions issued by administrative courts in cases involving nursing care benefits. The author also draws on the body of legal literature on the subject.

The article discusses the authority of a guardian (a representative in absentia) appointed in an administrative procedure for an absent person. The author presents a characteristic of such powers and attempts to systematise them. Selected matters concerning exercising the said powers as well as judicial practice concerning such matters are presented. The legal basis for the appointment of a guardian ad litem has also been discussed, which is art. 34 of the Administrative Procedure Code Act in conjunction with art. 184 of the Family and Guardianship Code Act. It was found that appropriate determination of powers entrusted to such a guardian brings certain doubts in practice, which mainly arise from the fact that there are no legal regulations in this regard. 34 k.p.a.) w związku z art. 184 k.r.o.

    No full text
The main aim of the book Musical Spaces in Contemporary Polish Theatre is to present the various functions of music in Polish dramatic theatre and also to demonstrate the ways in which contemporary Polish theatre directors ‘shape’ the sound layer in their performances. Concurrently, the author discusses two methodologies which can be used to analyse and describe theatre music. These two complementary methodologies are the semiotics and the performative aesthetics. The monograph explores the numerous relationships between music and other elements of the mise-en-scene, including scenography, actor’s body (acting and movement) and stage lighting. However, the main focus is the relation between music and theatrical fiction. The particular chapters are connected to each other by the ‘musical space’ category which should be defined as a specific way of shaping the sound landscape in a performance. The subject of the publication involves a variety of theoretical issues such as perception of music in dramatic theatre, classification of the theatre sounds, types of musical meanings, and also the influence of technology on the sound production. All these questions are considered with regard to particular Polish performances which have been produced in the last 25 years – especially the works of Jerzy Jarocki, Jerzy Grzegorzewski, Krystian Lupa, Andrzej Dziuk, Krzysztof Warlikowski and Jan Klata

An Analysis of Young-Band Repertoire in the Context of Culturally Responsive Teaching

Repertoire is a highly discussed topic especially for band music educators (Battisti, 2018; Brewer, 2018; Dziuk, 2018; Koch, 2019; Mantie & Tan, 2019). Many educators even view the “repertoire as the curriculum” (Reynolds, 2000, p. 31) making it a core tenet of the band music classroom. Repertoire can be chosen using a variety of filtering systems including alignment with music education philosophy (Allsup, 2018; Elliott, 1995; Jorgensen, 2003; Reimer, 1959; Reimer, 2009), artistic merit (McCrann, 2016; Ostling, 1978; Ormandy, 1966) and potential for musical learning (Apfelstadt, 2000; Hopkins, 2013). However, many critics of band repertoire claim that it is limiting to inclusive education purposes pertinent to contemporary music education classrooms (Abril, 2003; Elpus & Abril, 2011; Elpus & Abril, 2019; DeLorenzo, 2012; Kratus, 2007; Lind & McKoy, 2016; Soto, 2018). While repertoire is important when taking into consideration the development of comprehensive musical dispositions that are required for students to fully engage with music in their lived experience. Many music teachers may use repertoire alone to foster connections with student cultural referents (DeLorenzo, 2019; Shaw, 2020). However, inclusive instructional approaches such as Culturally Responsive Teaching (Gay, 2010; Hammond, 2015; Ladson-Billings, 2009; Lind & McKoy, 2016), Multicultural Education (Banks, 2015; Banks, 2019; Nieto, 2009), and Funds of Knowledge (Amanti, Moll, & González, 2005; Rios-Aguilar, 2010) can help to address the multitude of diverse student needs within the music classroom (DeLorenzo, 2019; Ravitch, 2010; Shaw, 2010). Guided by the tenets of inclusivity, teachers are also called upon to consider the importance of student cultural validation, background knowledge, as well as becoming increasingly aware of diverse repertoire and increasingly flexible with instruction when selecting repertoire (Abril, 2009; DeLorenzo, 2012; Shaw, 2020). The aim of this study is to provide a framework to help clarify the unique relationship between repertoire for young wind band and opportunities for responsive, student-centered instructional approaches
