Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Efficacy of ultrasound-guided intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma versus hyaluronic acid for hip osteoarthritis
Intra-articular injections of platelet-rich plasma (PRP) and hyaluronic acid (HA) represent efficacious medical treatments for osteoarthritis (OA), although no comparative study on long-term efficacy in hip OA exists. The goals of the current study were to compare the clinical efficacy of PRP vs HA at 12 months of follow-up in patients with hip OA and evaluate the influence of the type of infiltration and patient age, sex, body mass index, and degree of OA on temporal clinical evolution. One hundred patients with chronic unilateral symptomatic hip OA were consecutively enrolled and randomly assigned to 1 of 2 groups: group A received PRP and group B received HA administered via intra-articular ultrasound-guided injections. Patients were evaluated at baseline and after 1, 3, 6, and 12 months using the Harris Hip Score (HHS) and visual analog scale (VAS). An overall improvement was detected in both groups between 1- and 3-month follow-up. Despite a slightly progressive worsening between 6- and 12-month follow-up, the final clinical scores remained higher compared with baseline (P<.0005), with no significant differences between PRP and HA. Regarding clinical temporal evolution, multivariate analysis showed that HHS was not influenced by the type of infiltration, patient age, sex, body mass index, or degree of OA, whereas a significant association was detected between OA grade IV and VAS evolution (P<.0005). Intra-articular injections of PRP are efficacious in terms of functional improvement and pain reduction but are not superior to HA in patients with symptomatic hip OA at 12-month follow-up
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Combined arthroscopic treatment of tibial plateau and intercondylar eminence avulsion fractures.
Medio-lateral translation during knee flexion continues to raise controversy. Small population sizes, small joint flexion ranges, less-reliable measurement techniques and disparate experimental conditions led to inconsistent reports in the past. To study this subject with more accurate and reliable measurements, we carried out femur and tibia tracking in 22 intact cadaver knees during passive joint motion using a state-of-the-art surgical navigation system. Trackers with active light-emitting diodes were fixed onto the femur and tibia, and an instrumented pointer was used to digitize a number of anatomical landmarks. International recommendations were adopted for anatomical-based reference frame definitions and joint kinematic analysis. For the first time, knee joint translations were reported in both the femoral and tibial reference frames, and over a flexion/extension arc as large as 140°. During flexion, in the femoral reference frame, the center of the tibial plateau moved 4.8 ± 2.8mm medially when averaged over the specimens. In the tibial frame, the knee center moved 13.3 ± 5.7 mm laterally. The relative femoral-to-tibial medio-lateral translation was, on average over the specimens, nearly 20% of the width of the tibial plateau, and can be as large as 35%. Medio-lateral translation occurs in the natural normal knee joint
koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist
We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used
PRP intra-articular injection and viscosupplementation as therapeutic treatments for early osteoarthritis: multicentre retrospective cohort study in 150 patients at 6 months follow up
Objectives: The influence of the growth factors on cartilage repair is not
yet widely studied and its application in clinics is still experimental.
Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP), a blood derived rich in growth factors, is a promising method for treatment of cartilage defects. Aim of this study is to
evaluate and compare the efficacy of PRP and Viscosupplementation (HA)
i.a. injections for treatment of severe chondropathies of the knee.
Methods: The study involved 150 patients affected by chondropathy, early
Osteoarthritis and severe Osteoarthritis. 50 symptomatic patients were
treated with 3 autologous PRP intra-articular injections and evaluated
prospectively. For PRP production 150 ml of venous blood were collected
from each patient and underwent a double centrifugation, increasing
platelet concentration. All patients were clinically evaluated at the
enrolment, at the end of the treatment, at 6 months follow up. The results
obtained were also compared with two homogeneous group of patients
treated in two different centers with HA injections, one group was treated
with injections of High Molecular Weight Hyaluronan and the other group
was treated with Low Molecular Weight Hyaluronan. IKDC and EQ-VAS
scores were used for clinical evaluation and patient satisfaction and
functional status were also recorded.
Results: The comparison between the outcomes of the three groups was
statistically significative (p\0,0005), reporting a superiority of PRP group
at any times of F-up.
Conclusions: Autologous PRP injections demonstrated more and longer
efficacy than HA injections in reducing pain, symptoms and recovering
articular function in patients affected by severe chondropathies of the
knee
