Study on Quantity and Quality of Sheep Milk Sampled from Three Areas of Timis County

    No full text
Investigations were carried out in April on raw sheep milk collected from three centres from west (V), centre (C) and east (E) part of Timis County. The milk was collected by a commercial dairy-factory, with the purpose to monitor quantity (l), the fat content (%), protein content (%), pH, the presence of antibiotics, this cow or goat milk added, freezing point and the addition of water. Based on these investigations we can state that in lowland areas (V and respective C) was producing significantly (p≤0.001) more milk compared to the hilly area (E). The average fat percentage was significantly (p≤0.001) higher, by 0.56 and 0.46 percentage in V centre, compared to C and E. The average percentage of protein varied in very close (V = 5.75%, C 5.70% and E 5.66%), differences were not significant (p> 0.05). The milk had a slightly acid pH of 6.78. No antibiotics residues were identified or cow and goat milk was added. Addition of water was identified in 55% of milk samples taken from the C centre, and 22% from the E centre. Current results suggest that the milk of sheep taken from three centres in Timis County meets current European regulations on quality and food safet

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

Ophthalmology. 2005 Feb;112(2):208-18; discussion 219. Mitomycin C modulation of corneal wound healing after photorefractive keratectomy in highly myopic eyes. Gambato C, Ghirlando A, Moretto E, Busato F, Midena E. SourceRefractive Surgery Service and Antimetabolite Therapy Research Unit, Department of Ophthalmology, University of Padova, Padova, Italy. Abstract PURPOSE: To evaluate the role of topical mitomycin C in corneal wound healing (CWH) after photorefractive keratectomy (PRK) in highly myopic eyes. DESIGN: Prospective, double-masked, randomized clinical trial. PARTICIPANTS: Seventy-two eyes of 36 patients affected by high (>7 diopters) myopia. METHODS: In each patient, one eye was randomly assigned to PRK with intraoperative topical 0.02% mitomycin C application, and the fellow eye was treated with a placebo. Postoperatively, mitomycin C-treated eyes received artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months), whereas the fellow eye was treated with fluorometholone sodium 2% and artificial tears (3 times daily, tapered in 3 months). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA) and best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), contrast sensitivity, manifest refraction, and biomicroscopy. Contrast sensitivity was determined using the Pelli-Robson chart. Corneal confocal microscopy documented CWH. RESULTS: Mean follow-up was 18 months (range, 12-36). No side effects or toxic effects were documented. At 12-month follow-up examination, UCVAs (logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution) were 0.4+/-0.48 and 0.5+/-0.53 (P = .03) in mitomycin C-treated eyes and corticosteroid-treated eyes, respectively. At 1 year, corneal haze developed in 20% of corticosteroid-treated eyes, versus 0% of mitomycin C-treated eyes. At 12, 24, and 36 months, corneal confocal microscopy showed activated keratocytes and extracellular matrix significantly more evident in untreated eyes (Ps = 0.004, 0.024, and 0.046, respectively). CONCLUSION: Topical intraoperative application of 0.02% mitomycin C can reduce haze formation in highly myopic eyes undergoing PRK. Comment in Ophthalmology. 2006 Feb;113(2):357; author reply 357-8

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    No full text
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Sustainable Building Design in Kenya

    No full text
Sustainable design strategies involve complex interactions among social, economic and environmental factors those should be analyzed and solved quite differently by heterogeneous disciplines and stakeholders involved. Focusing on the cities of developing countries in tropical regions, characterized by fast urban population growth and a staggering increase in the energy consumption for building sector, it emerges that appropriate active strategies and building energy optimizations are promptly recommended. For this purpose, in the present work, energy evaluations were carried out for the designing of a residential building in Nairobi, Kenya, considering different strategies and solutions, taking into account also the affordability and considering the possibility to push local based economies through the use of built-on-site materials. This strategy may lead to a significant cost reduction and energy saving due to lower construction costs and in addition also a lower embodied energy of the building materials. Furthermore, in a region understudy, characterized by unstable economic security, the employment of local labor forces may lead to the formation of local based economies

Identification of quercitin and rutin from propolis ethanolic extract (EEP) of Timis county

In this paper were studied the possibilities of some flavonoides (quercetin and rutin) identification from the propolis ethanolic extract (EEP), depending on the harvesting region from the west of Romania (Timis county), the obtained results were compared to those obtained for similar products in literature (Hungary, Czechia, China, Slovenia). Representative samples were collected from three different regions of Timis county (Lugoj 1, Lugoj 2 and Faget). The identification of quercitin and rutin from propolis ethanolic extracts (EEP) was realized with high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). For separation and quantification the ethanolic extracts of propolis (EEP), I used the high performance liquid chromatography. Quantification was performed on the basis of the calibration curve obtained for pure quercitine. I used the HPLC Hewelett Packard apparatus Agilent 1100 type with UV detection, with the following characteristics: column: Nucleosil C18; 5µm dimension for stationary phase particles; column dimension: 150 x 4,6mm x mm; eluent acetonytrile:water = 1:1, eluent flow: 1 mL/min; wave length: 365 nm; temperature 30°C; injected volume: μL

Economic and Financial Integration of CEECs: The Impact of Financial Instability

    No full text
The recent financial crisis had a powerful impact upon the European countries' economies, in particular on those from Central and Eastern Europe, with some small exceptions. Thus, applying a panel data approach for a large sample of CEECs, we demonstrate that financial instability negatively influences these countries economic and financial integration. If instability is measured by means of a financial instability index, we have used two classical indicators for the economic integration, namely trade openness and trade intensity index. Indicators such as the interest rates co-movement and the asset share of foreign-owned banks were chosen to calculate financial integration. We highlight the fact that the crisis events hinder the process of CEECs' integration into the EU, deepening the economic gaps between more and less developed EU members.Financial instability, financial instability index, economic and financial integration, Central and Eastern Europe

A Multi-Language Comparison of Influences on Author Verification using Character N-Grams

    No full text
We create a new multi-language corpus for author verification based on Wikipedia talkpages, and evaluate the influence that differences in topic and time have on character n-gram author profiles. Topic alignment between two texts is found to increase author verification precision, and an authors writing style is found to change over time, but not more significantly after 3 years than after 1 year.Information ArchitectureWISElectrical Engineering, Mathematics and Computer Scienc
