Author Co-Citation Analysis (ACA): a powerful tool for representing implicit knowledge of scholar knowledge workers
In the last decade, knowledge has emerged as one of the most important and valuable organizational assets. Gradually this importance caused to emergence of new discipline entitled ―knowledge management‖. However one of the major challenges of knowledge management is conversion implicit or tacit knowledge to explicit knowledge. Thus Making knowledge visible so that it can be better accessed, discussed, valued or generally managed is a long-standing objective in knowledge management. Accordingly in this paper author co- citation analysis (ACA) will be proposed as an efficient technique of knowledge visualization in academia (Scholar knowledge workers)
Relations between x-ray timing features and spectral parameters of galactic black hole x-ray binaries
We present a study of correlations between spectral and timing parameters for a sample of black hole X-ray binary candidates. Data are taken from GX
339-4, H 1743-322, and XTE J1650-500, as the Rossi X-ray Timing Explorer
(RXTE) observed complete outbursts of these sources. In our study we investigate outbursts that happened before the end of 2009 to make use of the high-energy coverage of the HEXTE detector and select observations that
show a certain type of quasi-periodic oscillations (type-C QPOs). The spectral parameters are derived using the empirical convolution model simpl to model the Comptonized component of the emission together with a disc blackbody for the emission of the accretion disc. Additional spectral features, namely a reflection component, a high-energy cut-off, and excess emission at 6.4 keV, are taken into account. Our investigations confirm the known positive
correlation between photon index and centroid frequency of the QPOs and reveal an anti-correlation between the fraction of up-scattered photons and the QPO frequency. We show that both correlations behave as expected in the “sombrero”
geometry. Furthermore, we find that during outburst decay the correlation between photon index and QPO frequency follow a general track, independent of individual outbursts
Approximate Personal Name-Matching Through Finite-State Graphs
This article shows how finite-state methods can be employed in a new and different task: the conflation of personal name variants in standard forms. In bibliographic databases and citation index systems, variant forms create problems of inaccuracy that affect information retrieval, the quality of information from databases, and the citation statistics used for the evaluation of scientists' work. A number of approximate string matching techniques have been developed to validate variant forms, based on similarity and equivalence relations. We classify the personal name variants as nonvalid and valid forms. In establishing an equivalence relation between valid variants and the standard form of its equivalence class, we defend the application of finite-state transducers. The process of variant identification requires the elaboration of: (a) binary matrices and (b) finite-state graphs. This procedure was tested on samples of author names from bibliographic records, selected from the Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) databases. The evaluation involved calculating the measures of precision and recall, based on completeness and accuracy. The results demonstrate the usefulness of this approach, although it should be complemented with methods based on similarity relations for the recognition of spelling variants and misspellings
A distributed amplifier system for bilayer lipid membrane (BLM) arrays with noise and individual offset cancellation
Lipid bilayer membrane (BLM) arrays are required for high throughput analysis, for example drug screening or advanced DNA sequencing. Complex microfluidic devices are being developed but these are restricted in terms of array size and structure or have integrated electronic sensing with limited noise performance. We present a compact and scalable multichannel electrophysiology platform based on a hybrid approach that combines integrated state-of-the-art microelectronics with low-cost disposable fluidics providing a platform for high-quality parallel single ion channel recording. Specifically, we have developed a new integrated circuit amplifier based on a novel noise cancellation scheme that eliminates flicker noise derived from devices under test and amplifiers. The system is demonstrated through the simultaneous recording of ion channel activity from eight bilayer membranes. The platform is scalable and could be extended to much larger array sizes, limited only by electronic data decimation and communication capabilities
Outsourcing the Business Services
The nowadays international market of outsourcing services is relatively mature and with age comes wisdom ... Thus, on a grown market, choosing to outsource services can not only be justified by the strive to reduce costs but it aims to meeting more advanced objectives as accurate alignment with business strategies of the enterprise. As a result, outsourcing has reached new forms of expression that can help the enterprises to gain competitive advantage. In the context of a grown market, a new concept appears, namely the multisourcing which it refers to the outsourcing model of the future [1] that businesses must prepare to accept and use. This concept or model of the future refers to working with several suppliers, which are competitors in a spirit of trust and teamwork, in a collaborative process to maximize the benefits associated with outsourcing process.Business Outsourcing, Audit, Economic and Financial Analysis, Information Technology Outsourcing
Bilateral and unilateral arm training improve motor function through differing neuroplastic mechanisms: a single-blinded randomized controlled trial
BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE:
This randomized controlled trial tests the efficacy of bilateral arm training with rhythmic auditory cueing (BATRAC) versus dose-matched therapeutic exercises (DMTEs) on upper-extremity (UE) function in stroke survivors and uses functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) to examine effects on cortical reorganization.
METHODS:
A total of 111 adults with chronic UE paresis were randomized to 6 weeks (3×/week) of BATRAC or DMTE. Primary end points of UE assessments of Fugl-Meyer UE Test (FM) and modified Wolf Motor Function Test Time (WT) were performed 6 weeks prior to and at baseline, after training, and 4 months later. Pretraining and posttraining, fMRI for UE movement was evaluated in 17 BATRAC and 21 DMTE participants.
RESULTS:
The improvements in UE function (BATRAC: FM Δ = 1.1 + 0.5, P = .03; WT Δ = -2.6 + 0.8, P < .00; DMTE: FM Δ = 1.9 + 0.4, P < .00; WT Δ = -1.6 + 0.7; P = .04) were comparable between groups and retained after 4 months. Satisfaction was higher after BATRAC than DMTE (P = .003). BATRAC led to significantly higher increase in activation in ipsilesional precentral, anterior cingulate and postcentral gyri, and supplementary motor area and contralesional superior frontal gyrus (P < .05). Activation change in the latter was correlated with improvement in the WMFT (P = .01).
CONCLUSIONS:
BATRAC is not superior to DMTE, but both rehabilitation programs durably improve motor function for individuals with chronic UE hemiparesis and with varied deficit severity. Adaptations in brain activation are greater after BATRAC than DMTE, suggesting that given similar benefits to motor function, these therapies operate through different mechanisms
A framework to manage the re-organisation necessary in becoming an e-business : business-to-business e-commerce.
Bibliography: leaves 187-202.This thesis focuses on the development of a management framework that allows organisations to gradually evolve into a full-fletched B2B e-business. Every manager considering the implementation of a B2B e-business system as part of his business plan, need a rigorous approach for the successful implementation thereof. The successful planning and managing of e-business investments are of the utmost importance to sustain and create more shareholder value for the future. The main hypothesis stated by the author is that a framework is required to guide managers with the re-organisation necessary throughout the life cycle (including planning, implementation and sustaining) of a B2B e-business model. The author believes that this framework will contribute to organisations enhancing competitive position and thus, unlocking more shareholder value
The applicability of Herzberg's two-factor theory of motivation to teacher productivity with special reference to Jamaica, 1988
This study was conducted to identify the factors which were affecting teacher motivation and productivity in Jamaica, applying Herzberg's motivational factors. The following variables were used to examine the problems of teacher productivity: (a) Style of supervision, (b) Teacher Achievement (c) Interpersonal Relationship, (d) Recognition, (e) Responsibility, (f) Status, (g) Advancement and Growth, and (h) Working Condition. The hypothesis was that there was no statistically significant relationship between each of these variables and teacher productivity. A survey questionnaire, developed for the purpose of collecting data reflecting the perceptions of teachers from secondary high and technical schools in Jamaica, was sent to 350 participants randomly selected from eight schools in Middlesex County. The data were analyzed in the following ways: 1) Correlation Matrix of all variables, 2) Stepwise multiple regression to identify those variables causing the problem, using productivity as the dependent variable, 3) Factor analysis of all variables to group variables, 4) T-test to determine difference in perception of teacher productivity by sex (demographic data), and 5) ANOVA of demographic data of teacher productivity by a) Type of School, b) Age, c) Qualification, and d) Years of experience. The results of the analysis revealed that a significant correlation existed between teacher productivity and all the independent variables except status; and that the variables were grouped together in the factor analysis except for growth and development and status. There was a significant difference at .05 level of significance between teacher productivity by sex. All the biographic variables except for years of experience, yielded non-significant results. The regression analysis revealed that teacher productivity in Jamaica could be explained by two of Herzberg's motivational factors, namely, Achievement and Responsibi1ity. It is recommended that the Ministry of Education together with principals 1. Develop a promotional ladder to enhance remuneration, improve conditions, provide opportunities for greater responsibilities and curricular autonomy to teachers at all levels in the system. 2. Extend opportunities for teacher achievement through projects, conferences and committee services for curriculum development
