Pass me the ball: narcissism in performance settings

    No full text
The performance arena provides a multitude of opportunities for lionizing the self. Narcissistic individuals crave admiration and glory, and thus the performance domain constitutes an ideal medium for researchers to explore narcissistic behavior. However, despite its potential relevance and substantial research history within mainstream psychology, narcissism is only now starting to receive interest from researchers in the sport and performance domain. In this article, we aim to raise the relevance of narcissism (and more generally personality) within performance settings and provide a platform for future research in the area. We review research on the relation between narcissism and performance and conclude that narcissists’ performance is contingent upon perceived opportunities for glory. We also offer suggestions for explanatory mechanisms. Further, we examine factors that may influence narcissistic behavior in environments that vary in their opportunity for glory. In addition, as leadership positions present opportunities for glory, we ask whether narcissists make effective leaders. We propose theoretical extensions of the narcissism literature to the performance domain, and we close with a call for greater consideration of the role of personality in performance contexts

The Role of Repression in the Incidence of Ironic Errors

    No full text
The role of repression in the incidence of ironic errors was investigated on a golf task. Coping styles of novice golfers were determined using measures of cognitive anxiety and physiological arousal. Following baseline putts, participants (n = 58) performed a competition putt with the opportunity to win UK£50 (approx. US$100). Before completing the competition putt participants were instructed to “land the ball on the target, but be particularly careful not to over-shoot the target.” The distance the ball traveled past the hole formed the measure of ironic effects. Probing of the coping style × condition interaction, F(2, 41) = 6.53, p < .005, revealed that only the repressors incurred a significant increase in ironic error for the competition putt. This suggests that the act of repressing anxiety has a detrimental performance effect

Transcendence from Below: The Embodied Feminine Mysticism of Marion Woodman

    No full text
This article outlines the mystical path followed by Jungian analyst and author Marion Woodman. It unpacks the mystical aspects of Jungian psychology and uses Woodman’s life as a lens to view how the practice of mysticism can operate within alternative psycho-religious belief systems. Woodman deeply embraces mysticism as a transformative, feminist practice by focusing her work on healing the psycho-spiritual effects of patriarchy and the associated repression of women and the body. This paper also discusses how Woodman’s mystical revelations have begun to affect the epistemological foundation of Jungian psychology in a way that echoes the embodied and enactive perspective of participatory theory

Body self-discrepancies and women’s social physique anxiety: The moderating role of the feared body

    No full text
We explored ideal, ought, and feared body image self-discrepancies as predictors of social physique anxiety within Carver, Lawrence, and Scheier's and Woodman and Hemmings' interaction frameworks. One hundred women completed actual, ideal, ought, and feared body self-discrepancy visual analogue scales, the Social Physique Anxiety Scale and the Beck Depression Inventory-II. Moderated hierarchical regression analyses indicated that the relationship between ought body fat discrepancies and social physique anxiety was moderated by proximity to the feared fat self. Specifically, the positive relationship between ought fat discrepancies and social physique anxiety was stronger when women were far from their feared body self. The results highlight the importance of considering the feared self in order to more fully understand the relationship between body image and social physique anxiety

A obra fotográfica de Francesca Woodman representa uma busca incessante da procura da sua identidade.ABSTRACT------In this work, we intend to reflect on the difficulties of building a cohesive self from the study of the photographic work of Francesca Woodman, reflecting on the notion of selfrepresentation and identity. For the analysis of the psychological functioning of Francesca Woodman, psychoanalytic concepts and elements of Rorschach projective methodology were applied. In order to study the photographic work, Rorschach specific procedures were defined to assess Woodman’s identity, assuming that the photographic work is considered a self-portrait of the author. The data obtained showed the presence of a borderline psychic disturbance, presenting an undefined and fragmented self, with no boundaries, reflecting a fragile identity. The photographic work of Francesca Woodman is a relentless pursuit of search for identity

Factors Influencing Physical Risk Taking in Rock Climbing

    No full text
This study was designed to investigate factors influencing physical risk taking in the sport of rock climbing. Specifically, the relationships between physical risk taking, sensation seeking, spheres of control, and desirability of control were examined. One hundred five rock climbers from the United States completed a series of surveys measuring each of the above-mentioned psychological variables. As predicted, physical risk taking demonstrated significant positive relationships to both total sensation seeking and thrill/adventure seeking (TAS). The expected relationships between physical risk taking, personal control and desirability of control were not supported. As hypothesized, no substantive patterns were revealed between physical risk taking and interpersonal control or sociopolitical control. Finally, comparisons between high and low physical risk taking rock climbers revealed significant group differences for total sensation seeking, TAS, and disinhibition. The identification of predictors of physical risk taking is a key step toward identifying individuals likely to engage in high physical risk behavior, and under what circumstances they are likely to do so

Place-name changes in different periods with different effects: some examples from the Emilia area

    No full text
The subject of the present work consists of some considerations about the place-name changes in various backgrounds and periods in Emilia. The choice of the region originates from the direct knowledge of its landscape history and dynamics by the author, who may therefore compare place names with geo-morphological, political, social, economic and cultural events. Only this basic culture, with the acquaintance of local dialects, allows identifying the origin of place names and the cause of their changes. Place names were selected as connected with the traces of Roman land surveying along the via Emilia, where a specific place name has lost its original meaning after a long time and has been turned by people into another place name with a more recognisable meaning. Another particular case is the Cimone mount’s (northern Appennine) name that went through many changes in the course of time with different meanings connected with evolving custom of the local populations. The third example was found out from recent events and consists in a vain attempt of transforming an urban place name. It is found that when place-names changes originate naturally from a choice made by the people, the change is commonly acknowledged, whereas imposed changes have proved generally unsuccessful
